  • An analytical methodology for the calculation of the flexural and the shear capacity of concrete members with Fibre-Reinforced-Polymer (FRP) bars as tensional reinforcement is proposed. The flexural analysis is initially based on the design provisions of ACI 440.1R-15 which have properly been modified to develop general charts that simplify computations and provide hand calculations. The specially developed charts include non-dimensional variables and can easily be applied in sections with various geometrical properties, concrete grade and FRP properties. The proposed shear model combines three theoretical considerations to facilitate calculations. A unified flexural/shear approach is developed in flow chart which can be used to estimate the ultimate strength and the expected failure mode of a concrete beam reinforced with longitudinal FRP bars, with or without transverse reinforcement. The proposed methodology is verified using existing experimental data of 138 beams from the literature, and it predicts the load-bearing capacity and the failure mode with satisfactory accuracy.

  • This study evaluates the interfacial properties of composite specimens consisting of shotcrete and sprayed waterproofing membrane. Two different membrane prototypes were first produced and tested for their waterproofing ability. Then composite specimens were prepared and their interfacial properties assessed in direct shear and uniaxial compression tests. The direct shear test showed the peak shear strength and shear stiffness of the composites' interface decreased as the membrane layer became thicker. The shear stiffness, a key input parameter for numerical analysis, was estimated to be 0.32-1.74 GPa/m. Shear stress transfer at the interface between the shotcrete and membrane clearly emerged when measuring peak shear strengths (1-3 MPa) under given normal stress conditions of 0.3-1.5 MPa. The failure mechanism was predominantly shear failure at the interface in most composite specimens, and shear failure in the membranes. The uniaxial compression test yielded normal stiffness values for the composite specimens of 5-24 GPa/m. The composite specimens appeared to fail by the compressive force forming transverse tension cracks, mainly around the shotcrete surface perpendicular to the membrane layer. Even though the composite specimens had strength and stiffness values sufficient for shear stress transfer at the interfaces of the two shotcrete layers and the membrane, the sprayed waterproofing membrane should be as thin as possible whilst ensuring waterproofing so as to obtain higher strength and stiffness at the interface.

  • In this paper, it is intended to present more reproducible and quantitative method for adhesion assemssement. In scratch test, micromechanical analysis on the stress state beneath the indenter was carried out considering the additional blister field. The interface adhesion was quantified as work of adhesion through Griffith energy approach on the basis of the analyzed stress state. The work of adhesion for DLC film/WC-Co substrate calculated through the proposed analysis shows the identical value regardless of distinctly different critical loads measured with the change of film thickness and scratching speed. On the other hand, uniaxial loading was imposed on DCL film/Al substrate, developing the transverse film cracks perpendicular to loading direction. Since this film cracking behavior depends on the relative magnitude of adhesion strength to film fracture strength, the quantification of adhesion strength was given a trial through the micromechanical analysis of adhesion-dependence of film cracking patterns. The interface shear strength can be quantified from the measurement of strain $\varepsilon$s and crack spacing $\lambda$ at the cessation of film cracking.

  • The IACS Common Structural Rules are to be applied for double hull tanker of more than 150m length with contracted after 1 April 2006. The objectives of the rules are to make more robust, safer ship and to ensure transparency of the technical background. In compliance of CSR, we had carried out prescriptive rules scantling determination and 3-D hold FE analysis of AFRAMAX TANKER. Prescriptive rules scantling determines the minimum required scantling, hull-girder longitudinal bending and shear strength, hull girder ultimate strength, local strength of plate and stiffener, strength of primary supporting member and fatigue assessment of the longitudinal stiffener end connections to the transverse bulkhead. 3-D hold FE analysis assesses the structural adequacy of the vessel's primary hull structure and major supporting members using yielding and buckling failure modes. So we could verify the strength assessment of AFRAMAX TANKER applied CSR.

  • In this research, we tested 10 simply supported concrete-encased composite columns under monotonic eccentric loads and investigated their shear behaviour. The specimens tested were two reinforced concrete specimens, three steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) specimens with an H-shaped steel section (also called a beam section), and five SRC specimens with a cruciform-shaped steel section (also called a column section). The experimental variables included the transverse steel shape's depth and the longitudinal steel flange's width. Experimental observations indicated the following. (1) The ultimate load-carrying capacity was controlled by web compression failure, defined as a situation where the concrete within the diagonal strut's upper end was crushed. (2) The composite effect was strong before the crushing of the concrete outside the steel shape. (3) We adjusted the softened strut-and-tie SRC (SST-SRC) model to yield more accurate strength predictions than those obtained using the strength superposition method. (4) The MSST-SRC model can more reasonably predict shear strength at an initial concrete softening load point. The rationality of the MSST-SRC model was inferred by experimentally observing shear behaviour, including concrete crushing and the point of sharp variation in the shear strain.

  • The objectives of this research are to evaluate the effect of the compressive strength of concrete, reinforcing bar size, spacing of column transverse bars related to the concrete confinement effects on anchorage bond strength and bond behavior of beam-column joints subjected to cyclic loading and to predict the bond behavior of beam-column joints according to the variables by Finite Element Analysis appling the interface element between concrete and reinforced bar surface in a three-dimensional configuration. This paper shows that to verify the results by three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis appling a interface element, the test results that were already conducted are compared with analytic results. The behavior of bond and anchorage of beam bar is expressed by a local bond stress-slip relationship and the failure mode of bond is predicted by principal stress contour.

  • When subjected to the strong earthquake ground motion, upper-wall lower-frame structures have high possibility of the weak-story failure in the lower frame part. Sufficient strength, energy dissipation capacity and ductility should be provided at the joint between the deep beam and the lower column. In this study, a typical structure was selected for a prototype and four 1:2.5 scaled models, representing the subassemblage including the exterior column and the deep beam, were constructed. The transverse reinforcement was designed according to ACI procedure¹ and the procedure proposed by Sheikh². The inelastic behavior of the subassemblages subjected to the cyclic lateral displacement were evaluated through investigation of the ultimate strength, ductility, load-deformation characteristics. From the test of 4 specimens, it is concluded that the specimens designed according to Sheikh's procedure revealed higher ductility than that by ACI procedure.

  • An analytical model with tension softening for the prediction of the capacity of prestressed concrete beams under pure torsion and under torsion combined with shear and flexure is introduced. The proposed approach employs bilinear stress-strain relationship with post cracking tension softening branch for the concrete in tension and special failure criteria for biaxial stress states. Further, for the solution of the governing equations a special numerical scheme is adopted which can be applied to elements with practically any cross-section since it utilizes a numerical mapping. The proposed method is mainly applied to plain prestressed concrete elements, but is also applicable to prestressed concrete beams with light transverse reinforcement. The aim of the present work is twofold; first, the validation of the approach by comparison between experimental results and analytical predictions and second, a parametrical study of the influence of concentric and eccentric prestressing on the torsional capacity of concrete elements and the interaction between torsion and shear for various levels of prestressing. The results of this investigation presented in the form of interaction curves, are compared to experimental results and code provisions.
