  • The number of traffic accidents in Korea has been increasing since 2014. In most school zones, safety signs are installed to prevent children's traffic accidents. However, it has been known that the effects of those signs are not significant. A variable message sign(VMS), one of the components of Intelligent Transport System(ITS), has emerged as an alternative method. Therefore, this study examines relative effects of two different VMS messages(Timely vs. Continuous) on vehicle speed. Experiments were conducted in two school zones. 6,676 vehicles were measured for speed limit compliance. A counterbalanced multiple baseline design was adopted. The results showed that both types of message are effective in reducing the speed of vehicle. Specifically, A timely message was more effective in slowing down vehicle speed and improving speed limit compliance than a continuous message. The present study suggested that a VMS with human factors can be effective.

  • Speeding is one of the major causes of traffic accidnets in urban areas. Driver feedback sign(DFS) is a traffic control device that can be used for many traffic environments including work zones, school zones, and roadways. In this paper, the effectiveness of DFS was evaluated through a field study using speed data collected from before and after study periods. In addition traffic safety improvement was also quantitatively estimated using the variance of speed data collected. Staistical test results showed that the speed difference was statistically significant, and the distribution of speed data was also shifted greatly. Therefore, it was concluded that installing the DFS in roadways might lead to unifomity of speed of traffic flow, thus, potential safety improvement might be expected.

  • The work zone traffic management is of keen interest because the unstable traffic stream in work zones leads to not only less productive traffic operational efficiency but also negative impacts on traffic safety. A promising method to address such issues is variable speed limit systems(VSLS). VSLS is expected to increase in throughput and to enhance safety by diminishing the crash potential. In addition, the usefulness of VSLS has been demonstrated by significant amount of existing literature. The objective of this study is to identify the effectiveness of VSLS based on a meta analysis technique. Throughput and travel speed were used as measures of effectiveness for VSLS in terms of the operational efficiency and safety respectively. Results showed that approximately 16.4% increase in throughput and 16.5% decrease in travel speed were obtainable by VSLS. The outcomes of this study would be useful in developing technologies and polices for better operation of VSLS.

  • There is a two lane ECTS(Electronic Toll Collection System) that users can pass with 80kph high speed in SeoBusan Tall Gate. This system to be combined two hi-pass lanes for removing meddle-island have been operated successfully. But, the appearance of two Lane ETCS makes toll gate more complicated, so it is very important how to arrange effectively various tolling lanes. This study was trying to evaluate lane configuration for minimizing speed and speed deviation among all kinds of lanes including two Lane ETCS in seoul toll gate. That is, we selected all scenarios to be happened actually, and evaluated them using micro traffic simulation model (VISSIM). The results of this study showed that each alternative had a very different speed and speed deviation by lane each other, so we will be able to achieve effective operation and configuration of lanes in toll gate using scenario methodology.

  • The objective of this study is to develop numerical simulation model for analysing the wind speed reduction effect by coastal forest belts. The horizontally homogeneous turbulent flow equations, which are derived from the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method, both above the tree canopy and within the canopy were first formulated, and a first-order closure scheme with the capability of accounting the bulk momentum transport term within the canopy was employed. The averaged equations were solved numerically by finite difference method, FTCS (forward time centered space) scheme. The proposed model was also used to numerically investigate the effects of structural characteristic of forest belt on the wind speed. The effects of maximum leaf area density were evaluated, with the leaf area density of $1.0m^2/m^3$, $2.0m^2/m^3$, $3.0m^2/m^3$, and $4.0m^2/m^3$. Vertical distributions of leaf area, both uniform and varied distribution with a height, were also considered. A comparison of wind profile indicated that there was in good agreements between simulated and measured wind speed. Also, the results showed horizontal wind speed decreased under a height of the tree with increasing maximum leaf area density. In conclusion, in applications where computational efficiency and simplicity are desirable, the proposed numerical model has of great capability to determine the vertical turbulent momentum transport and wind profile in the costal forest belt.

  • This study was conducted with the aim of developing a system to collect taxi GPS probe information to prevent link defects and to improve the accuracy of the standard link-based travel speed by determining when to go into and come out the link. For this purpose, a framework and algorithm consisting of a five-step process for standard link-based map matching and individual vehicle travel speed are presented and used it to calculate the average travel speed of the service link. Two on-site surveys of Teheran and Hakdong-ro were conducted to verify the results by the methods proposed in this paper. On the basis of the overall time of the field survey, the deviation in the travel speed was 0.2 km/h and 0.6 km/h, the accuracy was 99% and 96%, and the MAPE(Mean Absolute Percentage Error) was 1% and 4% in Teheran and Hakdong-ro, respectively. These results were more accurate thand those obtained using conventional methodologies without standard links.

  • This study collected various data of urban roadways to analyze the effect of travel speed change, and a GRU-based short-term travel speed prediction model was developed using such big data. The baseline model and the double exponential smoothing model were selected as comparison models, and prediction errors were evaluated using the RMSE index. The model evaluation results revealed that the average RMSE of the baseline model and the double exponential smoothing model were 7.46 and 5.94, respectively. The average RMSE predicted by the GRU model was 5.08. Although there are deviations for each of the 15 links, most cases showed minimal errors in the GRU model, and the additional scatter plot analysis presented the same result. These results indicate that the prediction error can be reduced, and the model application speed can be improved when applying the GRU-based model in the process of generating travel speed information on urban roadways.

  • With the increasing use of E-scooters, there is an urgent need for research into their driving risks because of the rising number of related accidents. Existing theoretical analysis methods are primarily vehicle-centered and do not adequately reflect the lightweight and compact characteristics of E-scooters. This study was conducted on real roads to analyze the risk and stable speeds of drivers on longitudinal slopes, considering the unique attributes of E-scooters. The risk speed on slopes was, on average, 21 km/h, with the initial risk speed decreasing as the slope became steeper. The stable speed was determined to be an average of 17 km/h, except on slopes of 1-2%, which presented a relatively low risk. These results are expected to contribute to the academic foundation for policies aimed at reducing the top speed of personal mobility, as is currently being promoted in Korea.
