In this study, a mechanism by which glucose level modulates glucose transport in Jurkat cells was investigated. Glucose uptake was more efficient in the cells cultivated in low glucose (2.5 mM) medium than that grown in high glucose (20 $\mu$M) medium. Vmax (0.74 n㏖/10$^6$ cells$\cdot$min) of glucose uptake measured with the cells grown in the low glucose medium was higher than the one (1.06 n㏖/10$^6$ cells$\cdot$min) in the high glucose medium while Km was almost consistent through the change of glucose levels, indicating the increase of glucose transporter number.
Studies have been conducted using isolated surviving skin of Rana temporalia in an attempt to evaluate the effect of N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) on the epithelial $Na^+$ transport. Active transport of $Na^+$ across the skin was estimated by measuring short circuit current (SCC). NEM administered to the outside surface of the skin in concentration of $0.5{\times}10^{-4}-2.5{\times}10^{-4}M$ induced $20{\sim}40%$ increase during the first 30 mintues, followed by a gradual reduction in SCC. With NEM above $4{\times}10^{-4}M$, SCC was inhibited from the beginning. Qualitatively similar results were obtained when NEM was added to the inside bathing medium. However, the concentration of NEM for a similar effect was much higher with the drug in the inside bathing medium than in the outside bathing medium. The oxygen consumption of the skin was inhibited by NEM of above $10^{-4}M$, the effect being of approximately the same magnitude as that on SCC. The activity of $Na^+-K^+$ ATPase of the skin was not inhibited by NEM below $10^{-3}M$, but it was dramatically reduced with $1.2{\times}M$ NEM. The effects of NEM $(10^{-4}M)$ on the SCC and oxygen consumption could be eliminated by adding cysteine $(10^{-4}-10^{-3}M)$ in the medium, indicating that the SH group is involved in the action of NEM in the frog skin. On the basis of these results, the mode of action of NEM on the $Na^+$ transport across the frog skin was discussed.
In this study, a transport model was developed in order to analyze and predict the transport behaviors of radionuclides mediated by pseudo-colloid in the fractured rock media. The effect of pseudo-colloid formation on the transport of a radionuclide was shown to be tory significant when an ap-parent pseudo-colloid formation constant, $A_{ap}$ (㎥/kg), os greater than 100. It was resulted from example calculations that the transport of Pu-239 was faster than Ni-63 because pseudo-colloid formation constant of Pu-239 was venter than that of Ni-63. Thus, it can be concluded that acceleration of radionuclide migration may be occurred because the pseudo-colloid formation of radionuclides increases the amount of mobile components in the solution and consequently decreases the amount of radionuclides adsorbed on the stationary solid medium.
Water is continuously produced in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), and is transported and exhausted through polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), catalyst layer (CL), microporous layer (MPL), and gas diffusion layer (GDL). The low operation temperatures of PEMFC lead to the condensation of water, and the condensed water hinders the transport of reactants in porous layers (MPL and GDL). Thus, water flooding is currently one of hot issues that should be solved to achieve higher performance of PEMFC. This research aims to study liquid water transport in porous layers of PEMFC by using pore-network model, while the microscale pore structure and hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface properties of GDL and MPL were fully considered.
Staphylococcus aureus, the most salt-tolerant nonhalophilic bacterium, is the only foodborne pathogen that is able to grow at a levels below 0.90. The fundamental osmorgulatory strategy used by this organism involves the accumulation of intracellular compatible solutes such as proline or glycine betaine which are accumulated by transport and act as osmoregulators in cells. In this study, levels of proline transport systems and glycine betaine transport system of S. aureus were examined when cells are grown at high osmolarity. The levels of all three transport systems within S. aureus were elevated at high osmolarity and the most dramatic increase was found for the low-affinity proline transport system. However, in 5mM glycine betaine-supplemented medium, the level of the low-affinity proline transport system did not become elevated when cultures were grown at high osmolarity. The metabolic fate of the accumulated proline and glycine getaine was investigated by thin-layer chromatography an found to be not metabolized by S. aureus.
To understand the behavior of migration of contaminants in a fractured porous medium is a key to assure the overall safety of a potential radwaste repository. The feasible retention mechanism of contaminant transport in a tinctured medium are sorption of contaminants on solid surface and matrix diffusion of contaminants from a fracture into an adjacent porous medium. The acceleration mechanisms are the migration of contaminants in the form of pseudo-colloids and the limit of a volume f3r matrix diffusion. In this paper, the effects of these two acceleration mechanisms are studied mathematically, then semi-analytically computed by the application of the Talbot theorem and verified. Results indicate that the acceleration processes cannot be neglected in the modeling of contaminant transport in a fractured porous medium.

Two-dimensional modeling studies using TOUGHREACT were conducted to investigate the coupling between flow and transport developed as a consequence of differences in density, dissolution/ precipitation, and medium heterogeneity. The model includes equilibrium reactions for aqueous species, kinetic reactions between tile solid phases and aqueous constituents, and full coupling of porosity and permeability changes resulting from precipitation and dissolution reactions in porous media. Generally, the evolutions in the concentrations of the aqueous phase are intimately related to the reaction-front dynamics. Plugging of the medium contributed to significant transients in patterns of flow and mass transport.
Competitive and reliable maritime transport services benefit the economy as a whole, and are key efficiency factors for the production of both goods and services. Although maritime transport sector is very liberalized compared to many other service sectors, certain obstacles must be overcome before full liberalization of the maritime transport can be realized. Particularly, maritime transport services in Northeast Asia are regulated by a complicated and outdated system. To remove these barkers two approaches can be used: a regional trading arrangement approach and a multilateral approach via WTO. However, multilateral efforts are not likely to be successful in achieving any concrete progress towards maritime transport liberalization in the short- to medium-term in Northeast Asia. Consequently, it may be the best to take the following two progressive approaches and to make them work towards liberalization of the maritime transport market: a bilateral approach and a trilateral approach. A gradual process of liberalization would expand the market, help operators achieve economies of scale, promote the international division of labor and specialization, enhance the effective management of shipping services, and promote the long-term interests and welfare of the user by improving service quality and diversifying services. A liberalized and integrated maritime transport market in Northeast Asia should achieve both of these long-run policy objectives by benefiting both the transport service users and the transport service providers. In order to move the maritime transport liberalization programs as quickly as possible, it is desirable to establish a "Regional Maritime Transport Liberalization Committee." We suggest it to be a Tripartite (China, Japan and Korea) Committee initially, which can later expand its membership to include other Northeast Asian countries.
The cross-shore sediment transport in a coastal region causes the important changes in beach morphological properties. The accurate estimation of the cross-shore sediment transport is important for the designing of the marine structures such as seawalls, jetties, breakwaters etc, and the preventing coastal erosion and accretion due to on-off shore sediment transportation. In this study, the experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial beach slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and the parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials having medium diameters of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. The experimental results obtained from this study compared with previous experimental work and found to be of the same magnitude as the experimental measurements and followed the expected basic trend.
In suspension cultures of Streptanthus. the uptake rate of sugar was increased during the ceil starvation of sugar in the medium. The maximal uptake rate obtained with 3 days of cell starvation. Sugar transport system induced by the sugar starvation was completely inhibited by 10 $\mu$M cycloheximide. Plant cells are known to possess only one sugar transport system, but the uptake rate of glucose obtained a saturated kinetic while the one of sucrose had two different kinetics after the sugar starvation. Induced sugar transport systems had different kinetics compared to plant cell. These results showed that higher plants have adaptable ability to induce new sugar transport systems when the environment changed unsuitable.
