Analysis of the Transient Dynamic Response of Ocean Mining Pipe System Due to Impulse (임펄스 가진에 의한 근해역 통합채광시험 양광시스템의 파이프 동적 과도응답 해석)

  • A finite element analysis scheme is proposed to assess the dynamic response due to impulse excitation of ocean mining pipe system. Transient dynamic response analysis based on the proposed scheme was carried out for various types of impulses, and the magnitude of cable tension induced by impulse was discussed by using a model of 'Segero', a special purpose ship of KT-Submarine as well as ROV carrier 'Onnuri' A qualitative, prospective guideline for the relevant marine operation is obtained.

  • In general, several computational resources are required to perform multiple-loading transient response analyses. In this paper, we present the procedure for multiple-loading transient response analysis using the Krylov subspace model order reduction and Newmark's time integration scheme. We utilized ANSYS MAPDL, Python, and ANSYS ACT to automate the transient response analysis procedure in the ANSYS Workbench environment and studied several engineering numerical examples to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed approach.

A Comparative Study of Efficient Transient Analysis Algorithm for Parabolic Equations (Parabolic 방정식의 효율적인 시간해석 알고리즘에 대한 비교연구)

  • A finite element analysis for physical phenomenon which are governed by parabolic equation, has some inefficiencies caused by much computational time and large storage space. In this paper, a comparative study is performed to suggest the best efficient transient analysis algorithms for parabolic equations. First, the general finite element analysis techniques are summarized in views of formulation procedures, treatments of convection terms. and time stepping methods. Results of several combinations applied to one dimensional convection-diffusion equation and Burger equation are represented and compared using some criteria such as accuracy, stability, and computational time. Through the results, some guidelines to select a algorithm for solving parabolic equations are proposed for diffusion dominant and convection dominant cases. Finally applicability of two dimensional extension of the result is also discussed.

  • Background and Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of patients with acute transient global amnesia (TGA) using volumetric analysis to verify whether the brains of TGA patients have pre-existing structural abnormalities. Methods: We evaluated the brain MRI data from 87 TGA patients and 20 age- and sex- matched control subjects. We included brain MRIs obtained from TGA patients within 72 hours of symptom onset to verify the pre-existence of structural change. For voxel-based morphometric analyses, statistical parametric mapping was employed to analyze the structural differences between patients with TGA and control subjects. Results: TGA patients exhibited significant volume reductions in the bilateral ventral anterior cingulate cortices (corrected p<0.05). Conclusions: TGA patients might have pre-existing structural changes in bilateral ventral anterior cingulate cortices prior to TGA attacks.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a composite smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt-rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present smart UAV(TR-S2) structural model is constructed as full 3D configurations with both the helicopter flight mode and the airplane flight mode. Modal based transient response and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of structure and installed electronic equipments. It is typically shown that the helicopter flight mode with the 90-deg tilting angle is the most critical case for the induced vibration of installed electronic equipments in the front.

  • In order to ensure the structural dynamic stability of moving liquid-storage containers, the flow motion of interior liquid should be appropriately suppressed by means of mechanical devices such as the disc-type elastic baffle. In practice, the design of a suitable baffle requires a priori the parametric dynamic characteristics of storage containers, with respect to the design parameters of baffle, such as the installation location and inner-hole size, the baffle number, and so on. In this paper, we intend to investigate the parametric effect of the baffle parameters on the transient dynamic behavior of a cylindrical fuel-storage tank in an abrupt vertical acceleration motion. For this goal, we employ the ALE (arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) kinematic description method incorporated with the finite element method.

  • For the success of a structural integrity management, it is essential to acquire structural response data at some critical locations with limited number of sensors. In this study, the structural response of numerical model was estimated by data fusion approach based on the Kalman filter known as stochastic recursive filter. Firstly, transient direct analysis was conducted to calculate the acceleration and strain of the numerical standing beam model, then the noise signals were mixed to generate the numerical measurement signals. The acceleration measurement signal was provided to the Kalman filter as an information on the external load, and the displacement measurement, which was transformed from the strain measurement by using strain-displacement conversion relationship, was provided into the Kalman filter as an observation information. Finally, the Kalman filter estimated the displacement by combining both displacements calculated from each numerically measured signal, then the estimated results were compared with the results of the transient direct analysis.

Quasi-Transient Method for Thermal Response of Blunt Body in a Supersonic Flow (준-비정상해석 기법을 통한 초음속 유동 내 무딘 물체의 열응답 예측)

  • In the boundary layer of supersonic or hypersonic vehicles, there is the conversion from kinetic energy to thermal energy, called aerodynamic heating. Aerodynamic heating has to be considered to design supersonic vehicles, because it induces severe heat flux to surface. Transient heat transfer analysis with CFD is used to predict thermal response of vehicles, however transient heat transfer analysis needs excessive computing powers. Loosely coupled method is widely used for evaluating thermal response, however it needs to be revised for overestimated heat flux. In this research, quasi-transient method, which is combined loosely coupled method and conjugate heat transfer analysis, is proposed for evaluating thermal response with efficiency and reliability. Defining reference time of splitting flight scenario for transient simulation is important on accuracy of quasi-transient method, however there is no algorithm to determine. Therefore the research suggests the algorithm with various flow conditions to define reference time. Supersonic flow field of blunt body with constant acceleration is calculated to evaluate quasi-transient method. Temperature difference between transient and quasi-transient method is about 11.4%, and calculation time reduces 28 times for using quasi-transient method.

A Four-Node Assumed Strain Plate Element for Explicit Dynamic Transient Analysis (명시적인 동적 시간이력해석을 한 사절점 가변형도 평판요소)

  • An enhanced four-node plate element, which has been developed for explicit dynamic analysis of plate, is described in this paper. Reissner-Mind1in(RM) assumptions are adopted to consider transverse shear deformation effects in the present plate element. RM plate element produces a shear locking phenomena in thin plate so that the substitute natural strains based on assumed strain method are explicitly derived. The present plate element is applied into the explicit transient algorithm and the mass matrix of plate is formulated by using special lumping method proposed by Hinton et al. The performance of the element is verified with numerical examples.

Transient response analysis by model order reduction of a Mokpo-Jeju submerged floating tunnel under seismic excitations

  • In this study, a model order reduction technique is applied to solve the transient responses of submerged floating tunnel (SFT) from Mokpo to Jeju under seismic excitations. Because the SFT is a very long structure as well as a transient response analysis requires large amount of computational resources, the model order reduction is mandatory in the design stage of the SFT. Thus, we apply a model order reduction based on Krylov subspace to the simplified finite element model of the SFT. The responses of the reduced order model are compared with those of the full order model and also are verified by referring a previous work. In conclusion, the computational resources are dramatically reduced with an acceptable accuracy by using the model order reduction, which eventually is useful for designing the full-scale model of SFTs.
