In a wind farm, a large number of small wind turbine generators (WTGs) operate whilst a small number of a large generator do in a conventional power plant. To maintain high quality and reliability of electrical energy, a wind farm should have equal performance to a thermal power plant in the transient state as well as in the steady state. The wind farm shows similar performance to the conventional power plant in the steady state due to the advanced control technologies. However, it shows quite different characteristics during fault conditions in a grid, which gives significant effects on the operation of a wind farm and the power system stability. This paper presents an analysis of response of a wind farm during grid fault conditions. During fault conditions, each WTG might produce different frequency components in the voltage. The different frequency components result in the non-fundamental frequencies in the voltage and the current of a wind farm, which is called by "beats". This phenomenon requires considerable changes of control technologies of a WTG to improve the characteristics in the transient state such as a fault ride-through requirement of a wind farm. Moreover, it may cause difficulties in protection relays of a wind farm. This paper analyzes the response of a wind farm for various fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.
With recent ESS (Energy Storage System) fire accident, the fault protection performance is becoming more important. However, there has never been any experiments with the protection performance on the faults in the ESS system level. In this study, the effect of AC ground fault and IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar mode Transistor) short-circuit failure on MW class ESS was performed experimentally for the first time in the world. First of all, the effect of the AC single line ground fault on battery was analyzed. Moreover, the transient voltage was investigated as a function of the battery capacity and the power level. Finally, the breaking capability and insulation performance of ESS were examined under PCS short-circuit fault condition. Through the tests, it was found that ESS protection system safely blocked the faulty current regardless of the faults, whereas the electronic parts such as IGBT and MC (Magnetic Contactor) were broken by the fault current. Also, the electrical breakdown in ESS resulted from the transient voltage during the protection process.
This paper presents a new two-terminal numerical algorithm for fault location estimation and for faults recognition using the synchronized phaser in time-domain. The proposed algorithm is also based on the synchronized voltage and current phasor measured from the assumed PMUs(Phasor Measurement Units) installed at both ends of the transmission lines. Also the arc voltage wave shape is modeled numerically on the basis of a great number of arc voltage records obtained by transient recorder. From the calculated arc voltage amplitude it can make a decision whether the fault is permanent or transient. In this paper the algorithm is given and estimated using DFT(discrete Fourier Transform) and the LES(Least Error Squares Method). The algorithm uses a very short data window and enables fast fault detection and classification for real-time transmission line protection. To test the validity of the proposed algorithm, the Electro-Magnetic Transient Program(EMTP/ATP) is used.
When fault currents contain decaying DC offset, the peak value of the fault current in the first cycle of the fault period is higher than the fault current during the steady-state period. To reduce the asymmetric fault current, this paper proposes an operation scheme using the series connection of two hybrid type Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCLs) : an auxiliary SFCL and a main SFCL. The proposed method calculates the fault angle by comparing the zero-crossing time with fault detection time. According to the fault angle calculated, an auxiliary SFCL operates to reduce an asymmetric fault current during half a cycle after fault occurrence. After this process, the fault current is limited by a main SFCL. To confirm the usefulness of the proposed method, case studies using Electro-Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP)/Alternative Transient Program (ATP) Draw are perfomed.
Vibration transient generated by developing localized fault in gear can be used as indicators of condition monitoring in a gear. In this paper, we propose the phase map for a fault signal using continuous wavelet transform to detect this vibration transient. Local fault induces the abrupt fluctuation of load exciting tooth and phase lag in the vibration signal measured on the gearbox. The relatively large fault like "tip breakage" easily can be detected by the clear fluctuation of exciting load. However, minor fault like "initial pitting" cannot be detected using the load fluctuation. To detect this kind of minor fault, the phase map for a fault signal is taken into account. The phase lag by minor fault is observed well in the phase map.
Due to the increasing interest in safety and consistent product quality over a past few decades, demand for effective quality monitoring and safe operation in the modern industry has propelled research into statistical based fault detection and diagnosis methods. This paper describes the application of Hotelling $T^2$ index based Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method for fault detection and diagnosis in industrial processes. Multivariate statistical process control techniques are now widely used for performance monitoring and fault detection. Conventional methods such as PCA are suitable only for steady state processes. These conventional projection methods causes false alarms or missing data for the systems with transient values of processes. These issues significantly compromise the reliability of the monitoring systems. In this paper, a reliable method is used to overcome false alarms occur due to varying process conditions and missing data problems in transient states. This monitoring method is implemented and validated experimentally along with matlab. Experimental results proved the credibility of this fault detection method for both the steady state and transient operations.
This paper present a new verb efficient numerical algorithm for arcing faults detection and fault distance estimation in transmission line. It is based on the fundamental differential equations describing the transients on a transmission line before, during and alter the fault occurrence, and on the application of the "Least Error Squares Technique"for the unknown model parameter estimation. If the arc voltage estimated is a near zero, the fault is without arc, in other words the fault is permanent fault. If the arc voltage estimated has any high value, the faust is identified as an fault, or the transient fault. In permanent faults case, fault distance estimation is necessary. This paper uses the model of the arcing fault in transmission line using ZnO arrestor and resistance to be implemented within EMTP. One purpose of this study is to build a structure for modeling of arcing fault detection and fault distance estimation algorithm using Matlab programming. In this paper, This algorithm has been designed in Graphic user interface(GUI).
This paper reviews the characteristic of thermal and temperature of oil field cable in transient state such as grounding fault and lightning surge. For analysis in various conditions, many actual underground power cable systems are modeled using ATP. These results are applied for the examination of temperature increase when the single line to ground fault by the breakdown of insulation part and hitting of lightning surge are occurred. The inner part temperature of OF cable is analysed according to the various kinds of cable using the thermal model of transient state. The temperature increase of sheath and crossbonded lead bv fault current is also analysed using IEC 60949.
This paper proposes a fault detection system to detect the strip rupture in six-high stand Cold Rolling Mills based on transient current signal of an electrical motor. For this work, signal smoothing technique is used to highlight precise feature between normal and fault condition. Subtracting the smoothed signal from the original signal gives the residuals that contains the information related to the normal or faulty condition. Using residual signal, discrete wavelet transform is performed and acquire the signal presenting fault feature well. Also, feature extraction and classification are executed by using PCA, KPCA and SVM. The actual data is acquired from POSCO for validating the proposed method.
