  • Pulsed Er:YAG and $CO_2$ lasers induced temperature rise of tissue are studied using axisymmetric, two-dimensional, and transient Pennes' bio-heat equation or the implications of skin resurfacing. Model results indicate that Er:YAG laser induced temperature has much higher but more shallow distribution in tissue than that of the $CO_2$ laser because of its higher absorption coefficient. The increase of repetition rate does not affect the temperature rise too much because these laser modalities have much shorter heat diffusion time than the temporal length of each off-pulse. This model works as a tool to understand the photothermal effect in the laser-tissue interaction.

  • We summarize recent studies on photoinduced electron- and energy-transfer processes of various supramolecules including imide group(s) as a component. Recently, imides have been employed in various functional molecular systems, because of their excellent photophysical and electron accepting properties. Our research group also employed imides in various supramolecular systems such as donor-acceptor dyads, quantum dots, DNA, and so on. First, we summarize fundamental properties of imides such as photophysical and electrochemical properties. Then, photoinduced processes of imides in the supramolecular systems are described to show their applicability in the various fields.

  • Bulk nanobubble is one of the nanoscopic gaseous state found in the solution. We measured transient absorption spectra of eosin Y in the excited triplet state ($^3EY^{2-*}$) to elucidate differences in the dissipation process of the bulk nanobubble of oxygen molecule at air pressure. The time dependence of the oxygen dissipation process was classified three time domains (P1, P2 and P3). The comparison of ordinary bubbling method gave different results at P3 in contrast to similar results at P1 and P2, indicating the existence of characteristic dissolving state in the case of nanobubble.

  • The synthesis and excited-state dynamics are described for a tetrad (ZC - ZP - ZP - I) consisting of zinc chlorin (ZC), zinc porphyrin (ZP), zinc porphyrin (ZP), and pyromellitimide (I), which upon photoexcitation provides a fully charge-separated state (ZC$^+$- P - ZP - l$^- $) with lifetimes of 230 $\mu$s in THF and > 50$ \mu$s in DMF at room temperature via a stepwise electron-transfer relay that has been detected by the ps-time resolved transient absorption spectroscopy.

  • We fabricated thermal annealing-free polymer solar cells (PSC) by processing with additive and applied to flexible substrates. The 1, 8-Diiodooctane of 3 vol% blended with active solution resulted in enhancement of $J_{SC}$ due to increase of light absorption and hole mobility as improving the crystallinity of P3HT. In addition, the $V_{OC}$ of PSCs with additive was improved by inserting $TiO_2$ layer without any treatment. The $TiO_2$ layer prevented the direct contact between active layer and Al electrode and reduced the charge recombination near Active/Al interface. It was confirmed by calculation of J0 and photo-voltage transient measurement. The power conversion efficiencies of annealing-free PSCs using additive for ITO glass and flexible (ITO PEN) substrate were obtained 3.03% and 2.45%, respectively.

  • The damage threshold measurement of gold films is carried out with ultrashort-pulse laser. An enhanced two temperature model is developed to encounter the limitation of linear modeling during ultrashort pulse laser ablation. In which the electron heat capacity is calculated using a quantum mechanical approach based on a Fermi-Dirac distribution, temperature-dependent electron thermal conductivity valid beyond the Fermi temperature is adopted, and reflectivity and absorption coefficient are estimated by applying a temperature-dependent electron relaxation time. The predicted damage threshold using the proposed enhanced modelclosely agreed with experimental results, demonstrating the importance of considering transient thermal and optical properties in the modeling of ultrashort pulse laser ablation.

  • Arresters are the best protective device on electrical power systems against transient overvoltages generated by lightning and/or switching operation. Nonetheless, arresters are deteriorated by absorption of moisture in the environments of its use, repetition in the protective operation to overvoltages, and some defects at manufacturing. It is therefore important to estimate the electrical characteristic changes of ZnO blocks. In this paper, an accelerated ageing test by a standard lightning impulse current was carried out to extract parameters needed for arrester diagnosis, and leakage current components were measured. Total energy applied to the ZnO blocks at each time is about 1,050[J] in 8/20[${\mu}\textrm{s}$] impulse current. From the experimental results, we proposed electrical parameters and leakage current level to diagnose arrester soundness.

  • Triethylsilyl radical was generated by laser flash photolysis of a 1:1 (v/v)solution of triethylsliance and di-tert-butyl peroxide. The silicon centered radical was reacted with sulfides to give carbon centered radicals by displacement at sulfar. The carbon radicals were readily detected by their transient absorption spectra. The absolute rate of reaction of triethylsilyl radical with 9-fluorenylphenylsulfide, di-n-butylsulfide, di-sec-butyl, di-tert-butyl sulfide and di-n-butyl disulfide are $2.40{\pm}0.12{\times}10^8M^{-1}s^{-1}$, $11.21{\pm}0.89{\times}10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}$, $8.79{\pm}0.73{\times}10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}$, $3.29{\pm}0.18{\times}10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}$, and $3.41{\pm}0.09{\times}10^8M^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively.

  • The protonation of tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) in acidic organic solutions was analyzed by acid titrimetric and temperature-dependent absorption measurements. Competition between the protonation of free base TPP $(TPPH_2)$ and the solvation of proton by near solvent molecules determines the equilibrium of the diprotonated TPP $(TPPH_4^{2+})$ formation. The diprotonated TPP exists as an ion pair complex with the acid counterions, which are found to affect the degree of red shift of the Soret band. The rotation of the phenyl rings also plays an important role in the diprotonation, as suggested by the decrease in the degree of diprotonation for the fluorophenyl TPP derivatives whose phenyl ring rotation is significantly hindered relative to normal TPP. The difference of fluorescence lifetime between $TPPH_2 \;({\pi}_{FL}=19.6\;ns)\; and\; TPPH_4^{2+} \;({\pi}_{FL}=2.1 \;ns)$ was used advantageously to measure the rate of protonation in the excited state. The protonation of TPPH2 are found to occur much slower than the diffusion of protons from bulk solution to the porphyrin ring. The monoprotonated TPP is suggested to be the transient species for the diprotonation process.
