  • This study deals with heat pipes inserted into the metal hydride(MH) reactor to increase the effective thermal conductivity of the system and thus to enhance the thermal control characteristics. A numerical analysis was conducted to predict the effect of inserted heat pipes on the heat transfer characteristics of MH, which inherently has extremely low thermal conductivity. The numerical model was a cylindrical container of O.D. 76.3 mm and length 1 m, which is partially filled with about 60% of MH material. The heat pipe was made of copper-water combination, which is suitable for operation temperature range between $10^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$. Both inner -and outer- heat pipes were considered in the model. Less than two hours of transient time is of concern when decreasing or increasing the temperature for absorption and discharge of hydrogen gas. FLUENT, a commercial software, was employed to predict the transient as well as steady-state temperature distribution of the MH reactor system. The numerical results were compared and analyzed from the view point of temperature uniformity and transient time up to the specified maximum or minimum temperatures.

  • The photodynamics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer reaction of 1-hydroxyanthraquinone (1-HAQ) and 1-deuterioanthraquinone was investigated in toluene with time-resolved emission and femtosecond transient transmittance techniques at room temperature. The temporal profiles of transient transmittance of 1-HAQ could be well described with multi-decaying time constants. The ultrafast time constant within ca. 260 fs reflects the dynamics of proton transfer. The decay component of 2 ps is assigned to an additional proton translocation process induced by the intramolecular vibrational relaxation, whereas the decay component of 18 ps is assigned to the vibrational cooling process, while the long component (200 ps) can be explained in terms of the relaxation from excited-state keto-tautomer to its ground state. Time-resolved anisotropy decay dynamics and isotope effects on the photodynamics reveals that the ESIPT from enol-tautomer to keto-one of 1-HAQ is barrierless reaction and coupled to a vibrational relaxation process.

  • A study of the transition from transitory state to steady state in DSSCs based on natural dyes is presented; cochineal was used as dye and Li+, Na+, and K+ were the ions added to the electrolyte. The photocurrent profiles were obtained as a function of time. Several DSSCs were prepared with different cations and their role and the transitory-to-steady transition was determined. A novel hybrid charge carrier source model based on the Heaviside function H(t) and the Lambert-Beer law, was developed and applied to analysis of the transient response of the output photocurrent. Additionally, the maximum effective light absorption coefficient α and the electronic extraction rate κ for each ion were determined: ${\alpha}_{Li^+,Na^+,K^+}\,=\,(0.486,\,0.00085,\,0.1126)\,cm^{-1}$, and also the electronic extraction rate ${\kappa}^{Li^+,Na^+,K^+}_{ext.}\,=\,(1410,\,19.07,\,19.69)\,cm\,s^{-1}$. The impedance model using Fick's second law was developed for carrier recombination to characterize the photocurrent.

  • The dynamic properties of the 3rd-order neuron of the retina was investigated by using conventional intracellular recording techniques. Experiments were performed in the superfused retina-eyecup preparation of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. The cornea, iris, lens, and vitreous were removed by absorption with Kimwipe tissue under the dissection microscope thereby exposing the retina in a hemi -eyecup. The electrical signal was amplified by electrometer, viewed on oscilloscope. Regular signals from the cells were recorded on a penwriter and stored by data recorder and computer. Full-field, spot or annular light stimuli were generated on a computer monitor and focused onto the retina. Baclofen hyperpolarized the dark membrane potential, suppressed sustained component and enhanced transient component of the ON-sustained cell with a large transient component, but did not affect the surround antagonism of the cell. Baclofen selectively suppressed responses evoked by moving bar light stimuli on the ON-OFF transient cell. The results suggest that transient cells have directional selectivity in the inner retina. These dynamic properties of amacrine and ganglion cells were modulated by baclofen. Therefore, it is presumed that there is baclofen-induced directional selectivity in ON-OFF transient cells in the catfish retina.

  • Background: Recently, we identified a novel ginseng-derived lysophosphatidic acid receptor ligand, called gintonin. We showed that gintonin induces $[Ca^{2+}]i$ transient-mediated morphological changes, proliferation, and migration in cells expressing lysophosphatidic acid receptors and that oral administration of gintonin exhibits anti-Alzheimer disease effects in model mice. However, little is known about the intestinal absorption of gintonin. The aim of this study was to investigate gintonin absorption using two model systems. Methods: Gintonin membrane permeation was examined using a parallel artificial membrane permeation assay, and gintonin absorption was evaluated in a mouse everted intestinal sac model. Results: The parallel artificial membrane permeation assay showed that gintonin could permeate an artificial membrane in a dose-dependent manner. In the everted sac model, gintonin absorption increased with incubation time (from 0 min to 60 min), followed by a decrease in absorption. Gintonin absorption into everted sacs was also dose dependent, with a nonlinear correlation between gintonin absorption and concentration at 0.1-3 mg/mL and saturation at 3-5 mg/mL. Gintonin absorption was inhibited by the Rho kinase inhibitor Y-27632 and the sodiumeglucose transporter inhibitor phloridzin. Moreover, lipid extraction with methanol also attenuated gintonin absorption, suggesting the importance of the lipid portion of gintonin in absorption. This result shows that gintonin might be absorbed through passive diffusion, paracellular, and active transport pathways. Conclusion: The present study shows that gintonin could be absorbed in the intestine through transcellular and paracellular diffusion, and active transport. In addition, the lipid component of gintonin might play a key role in its intestinal absorption.

  • The ignition phenomena of a solid fuel plate of polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA), which is vertically positioned and exposed to a thermal radiation source, is numerically studied here. A two-dimensional transient model includes such various aspects as thermal decomposition of PMMA, gas phase radiation absorption, gas phase chemical reaction and air entrainment by natural convection. Whereas the previous studies considers the problem approximately in a one-dimensional form by neglecting the natural convection, the present model takes account of the two-dimensional effect of radiation and air entrainment. The inert heating of the solid fuel is also taken into consideration. Radiative heat transfer is incorporated by th Discrete Ordinates Method(DOM) with the absorption coefficient evaluated using gas species concentration. The thermal history of the solid fuel plate shows a good agreement compared with experimental results. Despite of induced natural convective flow that induces heat loss from the fuel surface, the locally absorbed radiant energy, which is converted to the internal energy, is found to play an important role in the onset of gas phase ignition. The ignition is considered to occur when the rate of variation of gas phase reaction rate reaches its maximum value. Once the ignition takes place, the flame propagates downward.

  • Synthesis and structural characterization of peripherally ferrocene-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc-Fc) were carried out for efficient far-red/near-IR performance in dye-sensitized nanostructured $TiO_2$ solar cells. Incorporating ferrocene into phthalocyanine strongly improved the dye solubility in polar organic solvents, and reduced surface aggregation due to the steric effect of bulky ferrocene substituents. The involvement of electron transfer reaction pathways between ferrocene and phthalocyanine in ZnPc-Fc was evidenced by completely quenched fluorescence from S1 state (< 0.08% vs ZnPc). Strong absorption bands at 542 and 682 nm were observed in the transient absorption spectroscopy of ZnPc-Fc in DMSO, which was excited at a 670 nm laser pulse with a 15 ps full width at half maximum. Also, the excited state absorption signals at 450 - 600 and 750 - 850 nm appeared from the formation of charge separated state of phthalocyanine's anion. The lifetime of the charge separate state in ZnPc-Fc was determined to be $170{\pm}8$ ps, which was almost 17 times shorter than that of the ZnPc.

  • A dynamic model has been developed to investigate the operability of a single and double-effect solar energy assisted parallel type absorption chiller. In the study, main components and fluid transport mechanism were modeled. And solar radiation and the solar collector were also modeled along with its control design. The model was run for the single mode with solar energy supply only and the solar/gas driving double effect mode. From the simulation results, it was found that the present configuration of the chiller is not capable of regulating solution flow rates according to variable solar energy input. And the issues of the excessive circulation flow rate and the mismatch between available solar power and cooling load discourages the use of the single mode, but the dual use of gas and solar power is recommendable in view of controllability and enhanced COP.

  • The excitation wavelength dependence of laser ablation dynamics of an azobenzene-containing urethane-urea copolymer film was investigated by measuring the laser fluence dependence of etch depth, transient absorbance change at each excitation wavelength, and transient absorption spectra. Moreover expansion/contraction dynamics was studied by applying nanosecond time-resolved interferometry. The threshold was determined at several excitation wavelengths from etch depth measurement, while time-integrated absorbance was obtained under excitation conditions. The photon energy required to remove the topmost of surface layer of the film did not .depend on excitation wavelength, and the penetration depth of excitation pulse dominated the etch depth. When the excitation wavelength was longer than 500 nm, permanent swelling was clearly observed but not for shorter wavelength excitation. In the latter case, photoisomerization occurred during excitation and the following photoreduction may play an important role. On the basis of the observations made in this study, a photochemical and photothermal mechanisms can explain mostly the short and long wavelength excitation results, respectively.
