Transient response analysis can be conducted either in the time domain, or via the frequency domain. Sometimes a frequency domain method (FDM) has advantages over a time domain method. A practical issue in the FDM is to find out an appropriate extended period, which may be affected by several factors, such as the excitation duration, the system damping, the artificial damping, the period of interest, etc. In this report, the extended period of the FDM based on the Duhamel's integral is investigated. This Duhamel's integral based FDM does not involve the unit impulse response function (UIRF) beyond the period of interest. Due to this fact, the ever-lasting UIRF can be simply set as zero beyond the period of interest to shorten the extended period. As a result, the preferred extended period is the summation of the period of interest and the excitation duration. This conclusion is validated by numerical examples. If the extended period is too short, then the front portion of the period of interest is more prone to errors than the rear portion, but the free vibration segment is free of the wraparound error.
A disadvantage of Fourier analysis is that frequency information can only be extracted for the complete duration of a signal f(t). Since the Fourier transform integral extends over all time, from $-{\infty}$ to $+{\infty}$), the information it provides arises from an average over the whole length of the signal. If there is a local oscillation representing a particular feature, this will contribute to the calculated Fourier transform $F({\omega})$, but its location on the time axis will be lost There is no way of knowing whether the value of $F({\omega})$ at a particular ${\omega}$ derives from frequencies present throughout the life of f(t) or during just one or a few selected periods. This disadvantage is overcome in wavelet analysis which provides an alternative way of breaking a signal down into its constituent parts. The main advantage of the wavelet transform over the conventional Fourier transform is that it can not only provide the combined temporal and spectral features of the signal, but can also localize the target information in the time-frequency domain simultaneously. The wavelet transform distinguishes itself from Short Time Fourier Transform for time-frequency analysis in that it has a zoom-in and zoom-out capability.
Phononic system composed of periodical elastic structures exhibit band gap phenomenon, and all elastic wave cannot propagate within the band gap. In this article, we consider one-dimensional binary materials which are periodically arranged as a 20-layered medium instead of infinite layered system for phononic system. The layered medium with finite dimension is subjected to a uniformly distributed sinusoidal loading at the upper surface, and the bottom surface is assumed to be traction free. The transient wave propagation in the 20-layered medium is analyzed by Laplace transform technique. The analytical solutions are presented in the transform domain and the numerical Laplace inversion (Durbin's formula) is performed to obtain the transient response in time domain. The numerical results show that when a sinusoidal loading with a specific frequency within band gap is applied, stress response will be significantly decayed if the receiver is away from the source. However, when a sinusoidal force with frequency is out of band gap, the attenuation of the stress response is not obvious as that in the band gap.
A time domain method is presented for soil-structure interaction analysis under seismic excitations. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. Equivalent earthquake input forces are calculated based on the free field responses along the interface between the near and far field soil regions utilizing the fixed exterior boundary method in the frequency domain. Then, the input forces are transformed into the time domain by using inverse Fourier transform. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field soil region formulated using the analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements in the frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in the time domain. Hence, the response can be analytically computed in the time domain. A recursive procedure is proposed to compute the interaction forces along the interface and the responses of the soil-structure system in the time domain. Earthquake response analyses have been carried out on a multi-layered half-space and a tunnel embedded in a layered half-space with the assumption of the linearity of the near and far field soil region, and results are compared with those obtained by the conventional method in the frequency domain.

In this paper, the different frequency component and time informations from an EMI signal are extracted simultaneously using a wavelet transform and the results of transform in the time and frequency domain are analyzed. Frequencies are extracted from the EMI signal by performing the multiresolution analysis using the Daubechies-4 filter coefficients and the time information through the results of wavelet transform. We have tried the correlation analysis to evaluate the results of wavelet transform. We have chosen the optimal wavelet function for an object signal by comparing the transformed results of various wavelet functions and verified the simulation examples of waveform and harmonic analysis using a wavelet transform. We have proved the denoising effect to the EMI signal using the soft thresholding technique.

Recently, many methods to analyze signal have been proposed and representative methods are the Fourier transform and wavelet transform. In these methods, the Fourier transform represents signal with combination cosine and sine at all locations in the frequency domain. However, it doesn't provide time information that particular frequency occurs in signal and denpends on only the global feature of the signal. So, to improve these points the wavelet transform which is capable of multiresolution analysis has been applied to many fields such as speech processing, image processing and computer vision. And the wavelet transform, which uses changing window according to scale parameter, presents time-frequency localization. In this paper, we proposed a new approach using a wavelet of cosine and sine type and analyzed features of signal in a limited point of frequency-time plane.

The detection of tool wear is very important in an automated manufacturing system. This paper presents a tool condition monitoring system based on the wavelet transform analysis of the AC servo motor current in a milling process. The current measurement is relatively simple and does not affect machining operations. The discrete wavelet transform was used to decompose the current of a spindle AC servo motor in the time and frequency domain. The feature vectors were extracted from the decomposed signals and compared to clarity normal and wear conditions. The results show the feasibility of the wavelet transform analysis for the tool condition monitoring.

Recently, the subject of \"wavelet analysis\" has drawn much attention from both mathematical and engineering application fields such as Signal Processing, Compression/Decomposition, Statistics and ets. Analogous to Fourier analysis, wavelets is a versatile tool with very rich mathematical content and great potential for applications. Specially, wavelet transform uses localizable various mother wavelet functions in time-frequency domain. In this paper, discrimination analyses of acquired electrical current signals for each and mixed loads were tried by using Morlet wavelet transform. Their representative loads were classified as TV, DRY(Dryer), REF(Refrigerate), and FL(Fluorescent Lamp).

The issues of preventive and condition-based maintenance, online monitoring, system fault detection, diagnosis and prognosis are of increasing importance. This study introduces a technique to detect and identify faults in induction motors. Stator currents were measured and stored by time domain. The time domain is not suitable for representing current signals, so wavelet transform is used to convert the signals onto frequency domain. The raw signals can not show the significant feature, therefore difference values between the signal of the health conditions and that of the fault conditions are applied. The difference values were transformed by wavelet transform and the features are extracted from the transformed signals. The dynamic time warping method was used to identify the fault type. This study describes the results of detecting fault using wavelet analysis.

The hydrodynamic radiation forces acting on a ship travelling in waves have been conventionally treated by strip theories or by direct three dimensional approaches, most of which have been formulated in frequency domain. If the forward speed of a ship varies with time, or if its path is not a straight line, conventional frequency domain analysis can no more be used, and for these cases time domain analysis may be used. In this paper, formulations are made in time domain with applications to some problems the results of which are known in frequency domain. And the results of both domains are compared to show the characteristics and validity of time domain solutions. The radiation forces acting on a three dimensional body within the framework of a linear theory. If the linearity of entire system is assumed, radiation forces due to arbitrary ship motions can be expressed by the convolution integral of the arbitrary motion velocity and the so called impulse response function. Numerical calculations are done for some bodies of simple shapes and Series-60[$C_B=0.7$] ship model. For all cases, integral equation techniques with transient Green's function are used, and velocity or acceleration potentials are obtained as the solution of the integral equations. In liner systems, time domain solutions are related with frequency domain solutions by Fourier transform. Therefore time domain solutions are Fourier transformed by suitable relations and the results are compared with various frequency domain solutions, which show good agreements.
