Psychological Treatment for Pain Among Cancer Patients by Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy - Efficacy in both India and Iran

  • The aim of the present study is to find out the influence of rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on pain intensity among cancer patients in India and Iran. The study followed a quasi-experimental, pre-post test, carried out with a sample of 88 cancer patients, aged 21-52 years, referred to the Baharat cancer hospital of Mysore in India and Shahidzade hospital of Behbahan in Iran. They were randomly assigned to the experimental (n=India 21; Iran 22) and control (n=India 22; Iran 23) groups. Pain was measured with the McGill Pain Questionnaire-MPQ (1975), the intervention by REBT has given to the experimental group for 45 days (ten sessions) and at the end of intervention, the pain of patients was again evaluated. Concerning to hypothesis of the study, two independent sample T test and three ways mixed ANOVA is used to analyze the data. Results showed that the experimental group in post test had less pain than the control group, but there were no statistically significant differences between Indian and Iranian patients in pain perception. With respect the outcome of study, it has realized that REBT can be used in hospitals and other psychological clinics to reduce the pain of cancer patients.

교통안전교육 전 . 후의 지식, 태도 및 실천에 관한 비교 연구 -초등학교 4학년 학생을 대상으로- (A Comparative Study of knowledge, attitude, and practice by Before-after trafffic safety education : focusing on the 4th grade student in elementary school)

  • Increase of automobiles become today's environmental problem decreasing space for our children's playground. The traffic situation around us shows automobiles over filled the public roads and started to intrude even on the side walks. Children's traffic safety education for the awareness of the danger from traffic mishaps, and for the behavior to cope with preventives measure by continual learning programs in systematized method is very important need in current health education. For this research, the subject was represented by 243 students from 4th grade in D Elementary School located at Daechi-dong, Seoul. During total of 5 weeks (September 4, 1997 to September 30, 1997), lessons were taught to the subject. Lessons consist of traffic safety education and customized education program that were designed and developed specificially for the subject level. In this research, Case group of 3 classes and control group of 3classes were predetermined before subject's degree of knowledge, attitude, and practice was analized. The difference before and after the training of this education was observed to verify the effectively and to find the influential factors of this education program. On September 2-3, survey study was performed after the training. the results of this study were as follows: 1. The knowledge analysis from the comparison between before and after of the training shows case group and control group scored(8.36, 8.86) before the traning, but scored(10.36, 8.52) after the traning. the difference from the result of the case group is statistically significant(p〈0.001). 2. The attitude analysis from the comparison between before and after of the training shows case group and control group scored(48.23, 49.87) before the training, but scored (51.05, 48.45) after the traning. the difference from the result of the case group is statistically significant(p〈0.001) 3. The practice analysis from the comparison between before and after of the training shows case group and control group scored (27.42, 28.08) before the training, but scored(30.49, 28.25) after the training. The differece from the result of the case group is statistically significant (p〈0.001). 4. The correlation analysis of traffic safety education's influence on traffic safety knowledge, attitude, and practice before training shows the relationship between attitude and practice was satistically significant(p〈0.05). The result after the training shows the relationship between knowledge and attitude, attitude and practice, and knowledge and practice was all statistically significant(p〈0.001).

  • In this paper, we propose a ADALINE controller using fuzzy-backpropagation algorithm to adjust weight. In the proposed ADALINE controller, using fuzzy algorithm for traning neural network, controller make use of ADALINE due to simple and computing efficiency. This controller includes adaptive learning rate to accelerate teaming. It applies to servo-motor as an controlled process. And then it take a simulation for the position control, so the verify the usefulness of the proposed ADALINE controller.

  • In this paper, a method for designing an optimal weight function for the weighted cepstral distance measure is proposed. A conventional weight function or cepstral lifter is obtained eperimentally depending on the spectral components to be emphasized. The proposed method minimizes the error between word reference patterns and the traning data. To compare the proposed optimal weight function with conventional function, speech recognition systems based on Dpynamic Time Warping and Hidden Markov Models were constructed to conduct speaker independent isolated word necogination eperiment. Results show that the proposed method gives better performance than conventional weight functions.

  • An isokinetic exercise system was designed and manufactured to perform muscular performance test and the traning of athletes and the rehabilitation of patients. The system majorly consists of gear box, D. C servo motor and servo controller, data reduction computer. Preliminary experiments were conducted to find out the performance of the system. The performance of the prototype isokinetic exercise system was turned out to be satisfactory compared with a commercial product called CYBEX system.

Can Narrow Band Chirp Stimulus Shake the Throne of 500 Hz Tone Burst Stimulus for Cervical Vestibular Myogenic Potentials?

  • Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare effects of tone-burst (TB) and narrow-band (NB) Claus Elberling (CE)-chirp stimuli on amplitude, latency and interaural asymmetry ratio (IAR) of cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) in healthy individuals. Subjects and Methods: The study included 50 healthy volunteers. cVEMP procedure was carried out using 500 Hz TB and NB-CE-chirp stimulus (360-720 Hz, up-chirp) in random order. cVEMP were recorded at 100 dB nHL. For each ear and each stimulus, P1 latency, N1 latency and P1N1 amplitude were measured. IAR was also calculated. Results: Mean age was 26.66±9.48 years. cVEMP's in response to both TB and NB CE-chirp stimuli were obtained in all subjects. No statistically significant difference in P1 latency, N1 latency, and P1N1 amplitude was found between the right and left ears for both TB and NB CE-chirp stimuli (p>0.05). In both sides, P1 and N1 latencies were significantly shorter in NB CE-chirp stimulation compared to TB stimulation (p=0.000). In both sides, no statistically significant difference was found in P1N1 amplitude between two types of stimuli (p>0.05). Conclusions: The chirp stimulus produces robust but earlier cVEMP than TB does. This largest series study on NB chirp cVEMP shows that NB chirp is a good and new reliable alternative.

마비 환자 보호자의 환자 이동 방법 교육이 안위감에 미치는 효과에 대한 예비 조사 (The Effect to a Sense of Safety by Training the Transfer Method of Paralytic on the Guardians of Paralytic: A Preliminary Study)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 마비환자의 효율적인 이동을 돕기 위하여 환자를 돌보는 보호자에게 자체 교육 프로그램을 적용 후, 보호자가 환자를 이동시키는 상황에서 느끼는 안위감의 효과를 알아보기 위함이다. 본 연구 결과, 병실 침대에서 휠체어로의 이동은 교육 전 5.06점에서 7.02점으로, 휠체어에서 병실 침대로의 이동 5.20점에서 7.04점으로, 휠체어에서 치료실 매트로의 이동 6.00점에서 7.20점으로, 침대에서 침대로의 이동 7.14점에서 7.86점으로, 휠체어에서 샤워의자의 이동에서의 위험도는 5.92점에서 7.20점으로 안위감이 높아진 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구를 기초로 한 반복연구를 통해 마비환자의 올바른 이동 방법 프로그램 개발이 이루어 질 것을 제언한다.

악관절잡음 환자의 하악운동양상 (Patterns of Mandibular Movement of Patients with TMJ Noise)

  • Registration of the mandibular movement in patients with temporomandibular joint noise (clicking and/or crepitus) was performed using one of mandibular tracking devices(SAPHON VISI-TRAINER CII,Tokyo Shizai-sha Inc.,Japan). The obtained results were follows : 1. In many cases, the movement pattern of light emitting diode(LED) attached on the mandibular midline showed lateral deviation from a vertical reference line which was pronounced in association with TMJ noise during opening and closing. 2. In patients with unilateral TMJ noise the mandibular midline usually towards the side demonstrating TMJ noise during opening. 3. A distinct V-shaped discontinuity in the trace of velocity of mandibular movement was found at the point of the TMJ noise. 4. In patients with TMJ noise the velocity of mandibular movement at the point of the TMJ noise was decreased rapidly. 5. In several cases, TMJ noise could be eliminated by traning of Rocabado`s control of TMJ rotations.
