Increased emphasis on competency-based learning modules and widespread departure from traditional models of Halstedian apprenticeship have made surgical simulation an increasingly appealing component of medical education. Surgical simulators are available in numerous modalities, including virtual, synthetic, animal, and non-living models. The ideal surgical simulator would facilitate the acquisition and refinement of surgical skills prior to clinical application, by mimicking the size, color, texture, recoil, and environment of the operating room. Simulation training has proven helpful for advancing specific surgical skills and techniques, aiding in early and late resident learning curves. In this review, the current applications and potential benefits of incorporating simulation-based surgical training into residency curriculum are explored in depth, specifically in the context of plastic surgery. Despite the prevalence of simulation-based training models, there is a paucity of research on integration into resident programs. Current curriculums emphasize the ability to identify anatomical landmarks and procedural steps through virtual simulation. Although transfer of these skills to the operating room is promising, careful attention must be paid to mastery versus memorization. In the authors' opinions, curriculums should involve step-wise employment of diverse models in different stages of training to assess milestones. To date, the simulation of tactile experience that is reminiscent of real-time clinical scenarios remains challenging, and a sophisticated model has yet to be established.
The purpose of the study was to implement and evaluate a nutrition capacity training program for dietitians and other professionals working at customized home visiting health services (CHVHS). This program focused on nutrition services for hypertension or diabetes mellitus patients including topics regarding CHVHS, and composed of 10 sessions with lectures, discussion and practice. Dietitians (n = 54) and other professionals (n = 20) participated in the program and completed the questionnaire to assess their understanding of nutritional management, nutrition services and CHVHS before and after the program, and to examine program satisfaction and education needs. Subjects were mostly women (98.6%) and college or university graduates (93.2%). Total score (p < 0.001), as well as all items (p < 0.001 or p < 0.01) of understanding regarding nutritional management, nutrition services and CHVHS, were significantly increased after the program both in dietitians and in other professionals. Subjects were generally satisfied with the program, showing more satisfaction with items regarding subject's participation, acquiring new knowledge, usefulness of the program for CHVHS, and education materials. In future nutrition capacity training programs, subjects wanted to have classes regarding nutrition services for specific chronic diseases, development of education materials, methods for dietary life education, modifying eating habits and so on. Other professionals compared to dietitians, showed higher education needs in meal management (p < 0.01) and nutrition counseling skills (p < 0.05). This study showed the effectiveness of a nutrition capacity training program for home-visiting dietitians and other professionals, and suggests the need and direction for future nutrition capacity training programs.

The purpose of this study is to review articles related to disaster training for nursing students and nurses by investigating the contents and effects of research. Electronic databases, including CINAHL, Pubmed and RISS were searched. Papers published only in English or Korean were included. Twelve studies were selected from the 3,588 references screened. Most training programs took less than 8 hours, focusing mostly on the response phase of disaster. Intervention methods included simulation, debriefing, action learning, role play, problem based learning and so on. It was found that disaster training programs have significant positive effects on disaster management competency, disaster knowledge, disaster nursing related self-confidence, and disaster response competency. It was also revealed that multidisciplinary practice would help learners enhance cooperation and collaboration with other team members and foster a positive professional identity. Among the selected articles, the randomized controlled trial(RCT) study was just one. Therefore, RCTs are further needed to verify the effects of such an disaster training. Also, further studies considering the characteristics of department and nursing interventions based on all phases of disaster are needed.
The purpose of this study was to measure dental hygienists' perception of the usefulness of clinical practice training. A total of 195 dental hygienists participated in the study. The findings of the study were analyzed according to age, the type of hospitals where respondents were working, experience in clinical practices and educational level as follows: 1. There were statistically significant differences in perception of the usefulness of the practice of amalgam filling preparation performed for dental operation among subjects at different ages (p<.01). 2. There were statistically significant differences in perception of the usefulness of the practice of paralleling technique(p<.001), the practice of amalgam filling preparation(p<.01) and the practice of trauma treatment preparation(p<.05) among subjects working at different clinics 3. Significant differences were observed in perception of the usefulness of the practice of sterilization(p<.05), the practice of suction(p<.05), the practice of history taking preparation (p<.01) and the practice of halitosis patient management preparation(p<.05) among subjects with different years of experience in clinical practices. 4. Significant differences were found in perception of the usefulness of the practice of paralleling technique among subjects with different education levels. The findings of the study suggest the need for strengthening education programs for clinical training content and practices which subjects considered important for their job. At the same time, the study emphasizes the need for developing training programs designed to produce dental hygiene preceptor who can provide dental hygienists with practical clinical training in cooperation with college and dental clinics.

The purpose of the study was to develop cyber in-service training contents regarding environmental literacy for entry-level environmental public servants. The blended type of contents were developed, through literature review, contents analysis of other programs, and expert conferences. The validity of the contents developed was ensured experts in environment. Major research findings were as followings: First, there is a lack of time for entry-level environmental public servants to participate in the environmental in-service training programs. Therefore, cyber training can be a good solution to the problems with environmental training courses. It improves access to educational opportunities as it overcomes the limitations of time and space and provides hands-on experiences through multimedia materials that reflect the real world. Second, directions for developing cyber environmental education contents were represented in three parts; 1) strategies for developing cyber environmental education contents, 2) Models for developing cyber environmental education contents, 3) Contents selection for developing cyber environmental education contents Third, the developed contents for entry-level environmental officers consist of 4 domains: (1) the introduction to environment; (2) the natural scientific understanding of environment; (3) the humanistic understanding of environment; and (4) the social scientific understanding of environment. Fourth, the program developed was evaluated by 7 environmental education experts according to 10 evaluation items of total contents and contents development structure. In result, the validity of the program was ensured. Based on the results, some recommendations were suggested.
The purpose of this study is to examine Korean teachers' needs in in-service teacher training and variables related to their needs. This study was conducted with teachers from Korean language centers in Korean universities. The following three research questions were investigated: (1) What are the teachers' experiences of Korean language teaching and in-service teacher training? (2) What are the teachers' needs and expectations for the content and components of in-service education programs? Are there any disparity between teachers' needs and institutional needs? (3) What are the variables to be considered in designing an effective in-service teacher education program? In order to answer the research questions, a survey was developed and distributed to university Korean language institutions and Korean language teachers. The results indicated that both institutions and teachers are highly aware of the importance of the need for in-service teacher training. The results also suggested that a more teacher-centered, bottom-up approach should be implemented for successful outcomes of teacher education programs. Based on the results, this study offers a summary of the need for in-service teacher training and variables (both individual teacher variables and environmental variables) to be considered in designing the content and components of a teacher education program.
