  • Korean high speed train(HSR-350x) has adopted a combined electrical and mechanical(friction) braking system. Brake blending control unit(BBCU) controls each brake system to fulfill the required brake performances such as braking distance, deceleration and jerk. When the disc brake is applied in the high speed region, the wear of pad is increased rapidly. In this paper, we discuss the optimized patterns of the disc brake force from the view point of braking energy.

Development of Sintered Friction Material for High Speed Train (고속 전철용 소결 마찰재료 개발)

  • The Friction Brake Pad of High Speed Train is the most important parts in brake system, which is usually made of Cu-based Sintered friction material. This study has been carried out about the formulation effects of sintered friction material and made lots of sample brake pads. Then, we have done the performance test of the developed product by using full scale inertia Dynamo-meter. This performance test (braking speed 300km/h) was conducted as GEC Alsthom Standard test procedure and High Speed Brake Test (braking speed 350km/h) was done at "Poli" in Italy. The friction properties of this product was almost identical with the brake pad which is currently used to TGV. And the temperature of brake disk on braking speed 350Km/h was a little higher.

  • The brake system of train must posses the large braking effort in order to stop the train safely within the limited traveling distance. But, the excessive braking effort has been deteriorated the ride comfort due to high level of deceleration and jerk, and sometimes occurred the skid, because the applied braking force exceeds the allowable adhesive force. This skid causes not only to increase the stopping distance but also to deteriorate the safety of train and damage the rail surface by wheel flat. In the present paper, the braking force for disc brake of Korea High Speed Train (HSR350x) was measured through on-line test and the adhesion force was estimated by using the analytic model in the skid condition. Also, we have discussed the relationship between the actual disc brake force and the adhesion force in real skid condition.

  • Disk brake system take charge of maximum braking energy among the mechanical brake systems for high speed train. For this reason, Metallic friction materials and heat resistant steel disk is adopted at disk brake system for high speed train. It was investigated tribological characteristics(friction coefficient, friction stability, wear rate and braking temperature) between some kinds of metallic friction materials and heat resistant steel disk. Cu-based friction material for high speed train have suitable tribological characteristics.

  • Dynamic behavior of high speed train is very important because the high speed train should be safe and satisfied with the ride comfort. An eddy current brake system is mounted on trailer bogie and wheelset. The eddy current braking force longitudinally exerts on the articulated trailer bogie and the attraction force vertically exerts on the wheelset. Because a frame of eddy current brake system is flexible, these forces generate the vertical vibration at middle point of the frame. Also, the vibration change the vertical clearance between an electromagnet and top of rail which affect the magnitude of braking and attracting forces. Therefore, the dynamic behavior of the eddy current braking system must be predicted for design the dynamic characteristic of its mounting system when normally operate on rail which have irregularity. Vampire program is used for Prediction of the dynamic behavior of an eddy current braking system.

  • This paper describes the method of how to improve the probability of the tracing stopping ratio which is the most important factor in Automatic Train Operation (ATO). Aspects of improving the performance of automatic driving, the followings are investigated and studied : Brake system maintanence method of vehicle, the need to improve braking system, test method of blending brakes, how to minimize the delay of commands for real-time control. In this study, we applied this method to prove the effectiveness in DAEJEON LINE1.

  • This paper proposes a design method for a 3-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) and clamping force control method for an electro-mechanical brake (EMB) using co-simulation for a high-speed train (HST). A traditional pneumatic brake system needs much space for the compressor, brake reservoir, and air pipe. However, an EMB system uses up to 50% less space due to the use of a motor and electric wires for controlling the brake caliper. In addition, it can reduce the latency time for brake control because of the fast response and precise control. A train that has many brakes is advantageous for safety because of the control by sharing the braking force. In this paper, a driving method for a cam-shaft-type EMB is modeled. It is different from the ball-screw-type brakes that are widely used in automobiles. In addition, a co-simulation method is proposed using JMAG and Matlab/Simulink. The IPMSM was designed and analyzed with the JMAG tool, and the control system was simulated using Matlab/Simulink. The effectiveness of the co-simulation results of the mechanical clamping force and braking force was verified by comparison with the clamping force specifications of a HEMU-430X HST.

  • As the brake control valve of freight car, there are sliding valve and diaphragm one. In this study, we measured and analyzed pneumatic characteristics of brake system of the freight car by using real train experiment. The difference of the release time appears in the freight car incorporated with sliding and diaphragm valve respectively. We adapted quick release valve to reduce the difference of the release time and also found that this valve is useful for the purpose.

  • CBTC(Communication Based Train Control) System has many superior train control performances than conventional track-circuit-based train control system with higher train operation efficiency, and less installation and maintenance cost. It is expected that CBTC will replace the conventional train control systems in near future. As CBTC has different mechanisms from conventional track-circuit-based train control systems in identifying train positions, and communicating information between train and ground facility, we have to pay a carful attention to making the interface between CBTC equipments and other signalling devices. This paper provides the construction of the interface between CBTC train-born equipment and other train control equipments including ATO, TCMS, brake controller, door controller.
