  • Automated vehicles rely on information collected through sensors to drive. Therefore, the uncertainty of the information collected from a sensor is an important to address. To this end, research is conducted in the field of road and traffic to solve the uncertainty of these sensors through infrastructure or facilities. Therefore, this study developed a traffic cone that can maintaing the gaze guidance function in the construction site by securing sufficient LiDAR detection performance even in rainy conditions and verified its improvement effect through demonstration. Two types of cones were manufactured, a cross-type and a flat-type, to increase the reflective performance compared to an existing cone. The demonstration confirms that the flat-type traffic cone has better detection performance than an existing cone, even in 50 mm/h rainfall, which affects a driver's field of vision. In addition, it was confirmed that the detection level on a clear day was maintained at the 20 mm/h rain for both cones. In the future, improvement measures should be developed so that the traffic cones, that can improve the safety of automated driving, can be applied.

  • With increasing traffic volumes and rising vehicle traffic, especially in cities, the number of pedestrian bridges has also increased significantly. Like all other structures, pedestrian bridges also suffer damage. In order to increase the safety of pedestrians, it is necessary to identify existing damage and to repair them to ensure the safety of the bridge structures. Owing to the shortcomings of local methods in identifying damage and in order to enhance the reliability of detection and identification of structural faults, signal methods have seen significant development in recent years. In this research, a new methodology, based on cone-shaped kernel distribution with a new damage index, has been used for damage detection in pedestrian truss bridges. To evaluate the proposed method, the numerical models of the Warren Type steel truss and the Arregar steel footbridge were used. Based on the results, the proposed method and damage index identified the damage and determined its location with a high degree of precision. Given the ease of use, the proposed method can be used to identify faults in pedestrian bridges.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the present status of subsoil compaction, and subsoil compaction management in orchard as a basic study for developing a self-propelled explosive subsoiler. Subsoil compaction was evaluated using the soil penetration resistance. Soil cone index was measured using the DIK 5520 type cone penetrometer in several fruit farms such as apple, pear, peach and grapes during growing seasons of these fruit in Jecheon, Gamgok, Choongju, Cheonan and Hwasung areas. Most of the subsoil managing machinery were either explosive type or digging type attached to the tractor or power tiller and turning radius of this machine was more than 3-5 m. Many of the farmers wanted to use the subsoiler which can put lime into soil and rupture soil at the same time. For most of the orchard fields, soil penetration resistance in vehicle traffic area was increased quickly and reached about 1.0 MPa in 5 cm soil depth. As the soil depth increased to 15-20 cm, cone penetration resistance reached about 2.0-2.5 MPa which restricted root growth seriously. Thus it was concluded that one of the main reason for increasing the soil compaction in orchard fields is agricultural vehicle traffic. In the vicinity of fruit trees, compaction is not so serious compared to that of the vehicle traffic area, but as the soil depth increased to 20-25 cm, in most of the orchard fields soil penetration resistance reached about 2.0-2.5 MPa which is the root growth-limiting value. Considering the rooting depth of fruit trees which ranged 30-60 cm for apple, pear and peach, and 20-30 cm for grape, it is necessary to loosen the subosoil and improve the subsoil conditions using subsoiler.

  • Improving the detection performance of facilities corresponding to the sensors of autonomous vehicles helps driving safety. In the road and transportation field, research is being conducted to improve the detection performance of sensors by road infrastructure or facilities. As part of this on the development of autonomous driving support infrastructure, the shape of traffic cones and drums to ensure sufficient LiDAR detection performance even rainy conditions and maintain the line-of-sight guidance function in construction zones improvement effect. The principle was to increase reflection performance and ensure no significant difference in shape from existing facilities. Traffic cones were manufactured in square pyramid shapes instead of cones, and drums were manufactured in hexagonal and octagonal pillar shapes instead of cylinders. LiDAR detection data for the facility was confirmed on a clear day and with 20 mm/h and 40 mm/h rainfall. The detection performance of the square pyramid-shaped traffic cone and octagonal column-shaped drum was to the existing facility. On the other hand, deviations occurred due to repeated measurements, and significance could not be confirmed through statistical analysis. By reflecting these results, future studies will seek a form in which data can be obtained uniformly despite the diversity of measurement environments.

  • Existing traffic safety studies have focused on identifying the relationship among roadway crashes, highway design and incremental weather condition such as rainy/ice weather. However, it is hard to find researches that studied the effect of sun glare on traffic safety although there are abundant evidences demonstrating that fatal traffic crashes are attributed to the sun glare. Affecting drivers'vision particularly during the morning or the evening time when the sun positions close to the horizon, sun glare directly deteriorate drivers'judgmental capability. In this paper, we numerically analyze the effect of sun glare on the drivers'vision in time and space domains. Applied to the roadways around St Louis area in the United States, the GIS based simulation analysis identifies the time of day in a year and the segments of highways that are potentially influenced by the sun glare. This study evidentially confirms the fact that roadway bounded for West and East directions have longer time influenced by sun glare particularly during Spring and Fall season than other roadways. The computational result provides risky time periods of day at intersections or pedestrian crossings where the sun glare potentially endangers traffic safety, which be utilized to reduce the crashes due to the sun glare.

  • The road construction, as part of effort to ease the worsening traffic, has been underway throughout the nation, while the existing road has been increasingly losing its load carrying capacity due to such factors as heavy traffic and weathering. In the case of site, the soil type, plasticity index, and specific gravity were SC, 12.2%, and 2.66, respectively. The maximum dry density, optimum moisture content and modified CBR were $1.895g/cm^3$ (Modified Compaction D), 13.6%, and 16.2%, respectively. A correlation of coefficient expressed good interrelationship by 0.90 between the CBR estimated from a dynamic penetration index of dynamic cone penetrometer test and a deformation modulus converted from a dynamic deflection modulus obtained from a portable FWD test.

  • How to determine the right number of small base stations to activate in multi-cell uplinks to match traffic from a fixed quantity of K users is an open question. This paper analyses the uplink cooperative that jointly receives base stations activation to explore this question. This paper is different from existing works only consider transmitting power as optimization objective function. The global objective function is formulated as a summation of two terms: transmitting power for data and coordinated overhead for control. Then, the joint base stations activation and beamforming problem is formulated as a mixed integer second order cone optimization. To solve this problem, we develop two polynomial-time distributed methods. Method one is a two-stage solution which activates no more than K small base stations (SBSs). Method two is a heuristic algorithm by dual decomposition to MI-SOCP that activates more SBSs to obtain multiple-antennae diversity gains. Thanks to the parallel computation for each node, our methods are more computationally efficient. The strengths and weaknesses of these two proposed two algorithms are also compared using numerical results.
