Toward a grey box approach for cardiovascular physiome

  • The physiomic approach is now widely used in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. There are two possible methods for cardiovascular physiome: the traditional mathematical model and the machine learning (ML) algorithm. ML is used in almost every area of society for various tasks formerly performed by humans. Specifically, various ML techniques in cardiovascular medicine are being developed and improved at unprecedented speed. The benefits of using ML for various tasks is that the inner working mechanism of the system does not need to be known, which can prove convenient in situations where determining the inner workings of the system can be difficult. The computation speed is also often higher than that of the traditional mathematical models. The limitations with ML are that it inherently leads to an approximation, and special care must be taken in cases where a high accuracy is required. Traditional mathematical models are, however, constructed based on underlying laws either proven or assumed. The results from the mathematical models are accurate as long as the model is. Combining the advantages of both the mathematical models and ML would increase both the accuracy and efficiency of the simulation for many problems. In this review, examples of cardiovascular physiome where approaches of mathematical modeling and ML can be combined are introduced.

Detecting Local Text Reuse in the Texts of East Asian Traditional Medicine (한의학 고문헌 텍스트에서의 인용문 추정과 탐색)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper was to examine quantitative methods for estimating and detecting local text reuse in the texts of East Asian Traditional Medicine. Methods : We introduce techniques that estimate the volume of local text reuse with n-gram and those that directly detect the reuse with the Smith-Waterman algorithm (SW algorithm). Based on this, the estimation and detection of local text reuse were carried out for 『Donguibogam』 and 『Huangdineijing·Suwen』. Results : Estimates with n-gram had more errors than methods with SW algorithms. SW algorithms detected suspected strings directly with local text reuse, resulting in more accurate results. Conclusions : Although n-gram does not accurately find local text reuse, its high speed makes it a preferable method for certain purposes, such as screening similar documents. On the other hand, SW algorithms have the advantage of being relatively good at finding similar phrases suspected as local text reuse even if the strings do not completely match. However, due to its excessive consumption of time and computing resources, its benefits are limited to cases where precise results are required.

The Development of Herbal Medicine Network Analysis System

  • Network pharmacology in traditional Korean and Chinese medicine studies the molecular and biological aspects of herbal medicine using computational methods. Despite variations in databases, techniques, and criteria, most studies follow similar steps: constructing herb-compound networks, compound-target networks, and target interpretation. To ensure efficient and consistent analysis in herbal medicine network pharmacology, we designed and implemented a common analysis pipeline. We showed its reliability with existing databases. The proposed system has a potential to facilitate network pharmacology analysis in traditional medicine, ensuring consistent analysis of various herbal medicines.

Text Classification Using Parallel Word-level and Character-level Embeddings in Convolutional Neural Networks

  • Deep learning techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) show superior performance in text classification than traditional approaches such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Naïve Bayesian approaches. When using CNNs for text classification tasks, word embedding or character embedding is a step to transform words or characters to fixed size vectors before feeding them into convolutional layers. In this paper, we propose a parallel word-level and character-level embedding approach in CNNs for text classification. The proposed approach can capture word-level and character-level patterns concurrently in CNNs. To show the usefulness of proposed approach, we perform experiments with two English and three Korean text datasets. The experimental results show that character-level embedding works better in Korean and word-level embedding performs well in English. Also the experimental results reveal that the proposed approach provides better performance than traditional CNNs with word-level embedding or character-level embedding in both Korean and English documents. From more detail investigation, we find that the proposed approach tends to perform better when there is relatively small amount of data comparing to the traditional embedding approaches.

  • Workflow Management System (WFMS) is a software system to support an efficient execution, control and management of complex business processes. Since traditional commercial systems mainly focus on automating processes, they don't have methods for enhancing the task performer's efficiency. In this paper, we propose a new method of executing business processes more efficiently in that a whole process is scheduled considering the degree of the participants' workload. The method allows managing the largest constraints among constituent resources of the process. We utilize DBR scheduling techniques to develop the method. We first consider the differences between workflow process models and DBR application models, and then develop the modified drum, buffer and rope. This leads us to develop WF-DBR (WorkFlow-DBR) that can control the proper size of the task performers' work list and arrival rate of process instances. Use of WF-DBR improves the efficiency of the whole process as well as the participants' working condition. We then carry out a set of simulation experiments and compare the effectiveness of our approach with that of scheduling techniques used in existing systems.

  • Compared to traditional fashion design, modern fashion design is used as a means that creates original and multiple types of beauty beyond fixed and standardized concept and form. Overlapping technique is the most suitable means to shed classical, authoritative and conservative form and it enables diverse borrowing and quotation for creation. This study aimed to analyze overlapping techniques that are expressed in art, architecture and fashion to find out its characteristics in the field of fashion. The result of this study is as follows. Based on theories of visual perception and advance research, types of overlapping technique were classified as pile, repetition, penetration and transparency. When comparing overlapping techniques in modern fashion with those of painting and architecture, fashion was distinctive in that it had movement and communicativeness through overlapping of fashion and the human body. Therefore, the overlapping technique has wide application and adaptation and can cause specialty, movability, communicativeness and collectivity, which can arouse psychological inspiration.

  • Most of companies related to the area of B2B electronic commerce are making their efforts to innovate their existing business process into new designed process. XML-based electronic data interchange has potential to impact on reshaping the traditional EDI systems. This study intends to suggest a prototype of XML-based electronic data interchange using unified modeling language, with a case study applied in Korean automobile industry. In order to accomplish the research objectives, we employed UML as its standard modeling language, In this study, four diagramming techniques such as use case diagram, sequence diagram, class diagram, component diagram among eight modeling techniques are used for analyzing hierarchical business process. As a result of applying UML methodology, we design and develop XML/EDI applications efficiently. Our field test applied to Korean automobile industry shows that data modeling to design XML application using UML is better than existing methodologies in representing object schema of XML data and in extension and interoperability of systems.

  • This is a study on how to create an ecological arboretum that would promote biodiversity by creating wild animal habitats in terms of using large-scale remnants in urban areas and that would serve as a field for environment education based on its locational feature of being an urban area and its accessibility. This study is significant in a sense that this is the first arboretum to be created in urban area. However, it has a couple of limitations and they are as follows. First, since an arboretum creation plan is a mid/long-term plan, it is difficult to verify the biodiversity promotion effect of the application of habitats and creation techniques. Second, as the space was created by considering ecological features and utilizing natural prototype, the diversity of forest trees in here is lower than that of a traditional arboretum.

A novel hybrid testing approach for piping systems of industrial plants

  • The need for assessing dynamic response of typical industrial piping systems subjected to seismic loading motivated the authors to apply model reduction techniques to experimental dynamic substructuring. Initially, a better insight into the dynamic response of the emulated system was provided by means of the principal component analysis. The clear understanding of reduction basis requirements paved the way for the implementation of a number of model reduction techniques aimed at extending the applicability range of the hybrid testing technique beyond its traditional scope. Therefore, several hybrid simulations were performed on a typical full-scale industrial piping system endowed with a number of critical components, like elbows, Tee joints and bolted flange joints, ranging from operational to collapse limit states. Then, the favourable performance of the L-Stable Real-Time compatible time integrator and an effective delay compensation method were also checked throughout the testing campaign. Finally, several aspects of the piping performance were commented and conclusions drawn.

A Study on the Characteristics of Korean "Lu. Chong" Style and the Planning Theories (한국의 누정양식상 제특성 및 계획이론에 관한 연구 -특히 경관처 리기법을 중심으로-)

  • The style of "Lu$.$Chong" was analyzed to investigate the characteristics of korean traditional garden style or planning theories of garden. To carry out this study more effectively, a combinded approach was introduced. This approach consisted of two processes. One was the review of old literature and the other was field survey. About 65-80% of Lu$.$Chong were named after natural landscape elements or techniques of natural landscape treatment. The techniques was summarrized 'conversing-scape(聚景)', 'surround-scape', 'multiland-scape(多景)', 'far-off-scape(遠景)', and 'emptiness of Lu$.$ Chong or landscape'. The results were proved through the analysis of visual boundary, locational pattern and 'Palkyeong(eight-sceneries)'.
