  • This study analyzes areas, traffic lines and characteristics of block of traditional villages in order to suggest how to build urban village in the way that can solve problems occurring in residential areas these days. The study showed the following results: 1) Traditional villages have definite boundary and entrance, and the community area for the villages is close to the entrance to encourage community activities of villagers. 2) With an access in the form of a blind alley branched from the main road, traditional villages form a small-sized clustering and encourage community activities in a natural way. 3) Formed of block with a pattern of net, blind alley or standing in a line on both sides, traditional villages help residents to form close relations between. These findings suggest that for building desirable urban villages, 1) they should have definite boundary, 2) size and location of community area should be determined in the way to activate community activities of residents, 3) roads inside the village should have branched form rather than standardized check pattern so that small-sized clustering could be formed along the branched inner roads, and 4) clustering in villages should be arranged in a line on both sides or in the form of a blind alley giving consideration to the length and width of roads. The roads should be also of a closed type so that residents could create strong bonds with their neighbors.

Fourth, it is necessary to apply experts and facilities of local-based universities, cooperate with relevant organizations, and nurture local leaders by various means such as study in/visits to advanced regions at home and abroad and experts training. Localgovernment should be in charge of nurturing talented people. Fifth, it is necessary to reinvigorate rural economy by networking each Rural Traditional Theme Village, providing a wide range of information on diversified villages to people in cities, and promoting consumption. • Little research has been done regarding the explicit and objective analysis and explanation of the spatial logic of traditional Korean settlement patterns, in spite of many archeological and socio-historical studies. In this paper we present research into spatial mechanisms and their social meanings in three traditional villages in the southern province of Korea. Conventional space-syntax analysis of spatial configuration has been used to analysis and investigate the morphological forms and functions of the traditional villages. The research results show that the traditional Korean villages are spatially deeper and syntactically less connected than other comparable urban forms, such as old European cities. Configurational analysis of the three villages reveals that their spatial structures are configured to have their own spatial logic, not a geometric order but a spatial structure. What is however noteworthy is the way they embrace their own environmental context and factors and implement them into the process of urban growth or spatial construction.

  • A traditional village is cultural property where old buildings and traditions are concentrated and also where indigenous traditional cultures can be recognized and experienced directly or indirectly. In addition, traditional villages have been recognized as precious resources to revitalize regional economies through tourism. Currently, signage systems have been developed as for ordinary tourist sites or cities, and concepts or methods for sign system for traditional villages have not yet been established. Therefore, it is necessary to develop disaster prevention-based signage to prevent large-scale disasters, to guarantee the safety of residents, and to increase the satisfaction of visitors in traditional villages as precious resources. A case study is conducted to apply the proposed sign system for traditional villages in Korea and Japan as a tourist-oriented sign system that has been accomplished in Korea and a large disaster-oriented sign system developed with residents as a priority in Japan. The disaster prevention sign system considers the residents since residents are victims when a disaster happens, and guideline to increase the efficacy and satisfaction are suggested. However, this study has definite limits in sucring objectivity because the objects of study are insufficient, and the development of the sign system based on effective disaster prevention considering the features of traditional villages will continue in the future.

  • Sign system currently used for traditional heritage villages in Korea does not have any well-defined concept and method so that somewhat improper signs can be developed like for general urban or tourism area. In this paper, we present a new method or guideline of sign system based on DPD(disaster prevention design) concept for our traditional heritage villages. We can enhance both safety of residents and satisfaction of visitors throughout this guideline. According to our investigations on the heritage villages, sign systems in Korea are mainly developed for tourism, on the other hand, sign development in Japan mainly focuses on prevention or protection against big disasters like earthquakes. Considering residents and their safety, we can submit a proper guideline to develop sign system for our traditional heritage villages based on the concept of DPD which can be applied to each space. Asan 'Oeam Village' and Beppu 'Onsen Village' are used as application sites compared between Korea and Japan.

  • Recently, cultural property policies have changed from the preservation of cultural assets to the utilization of cultural assets. In historic villages, more and more traditional housings have been used as lodging facilities. On the other hand, low birth rates, aging population, declining population due to population outflow to the cities, increasing vacant houses, and aging buildings are tasks of historic villages. To be preserved the historic villages continuously, it is time to review how to regenerate and utilize the growing number of vacant houses. This study targets Tambasasayama city, which is drawing attention to the regeneration and utilization of vacant houses among historic Japanese villages. We want to analyze the operation systems and deregulation of a traditional housing regeneration project in Tambasasayama city and draw suggestions for the regeneration and utilization of vacant houses in traditional villages in South Korea.

  • This study is about the co-relationship between the directional orientation of the houses and the geometric direction in the Korean traditional villages. The major mountain in the back of the village and the front mountain ranges give the most important influence for the direction of the houses. This paper, therefore, tries to identify how the houses of villages facing South-west direct the orientation. The village, where the natural environment face the South-west village, solves the problem by facing major direction rather than one all direction. All houses observe and respect the circumstance of geomantic surrounding to the extant that almost no houses revise its direction without any geomantic reference. This kind of research let us know the relationship between the natural direction, the direction of geomantic surrounding, and the direction of houses in traditional Korean villages.
