  • In Korean traditional music, the frequency of Hwang-Jong tone is not known precisely, to say nothing of the temperament. So we measured the frequency of Hwang-Jong tone in solo pieces for the woodwind instruments such as daegum, piri and danso. According to the results of the measurement, the frequency of Hwang-Jong tone is about 328Hz, which is closer to the frequency of E$_3$(330Hz) than that of E$^b_3$(311Hz). This result is different from the existing theory that the frequency of Hwang-Jong tone is close to that of E$^b_3$.

  • Adequate access cavity is the key to achieving endodontic success. The aims of the access cavity can be considered as follows: 1) Creation of a smooth unimpeded pathway for instruments to canal orifices 2) Removal of the entire roof of the pulp chamber in order to inspect the pulp floor, 3) Preservation of natural tooth substance consistent with the above. Recently, contracted endodontic cavities based on minimally invasive endodontics has introduced. This has the benefit of preserving the pericervical dentin more than traditional access cavity with achieving long-term success. However, some studies reported controversial results regarding root canal detection, instrumentation efficacy (noninstrumented canal area, hard tissue debris accumulation, canal transportation, and centering ratio) as well as fracture resistance. Therefore, further studies are required for accepting contracted access cavity, and modified form of traditional and contracted access cavity could be considered.

  • This study will attempt to show how marriage ceremonies in Korea have reflected marriage custom influences from science and industrialization the study focuses on changes in traditional features. As a result of science and industrialization, the social patterns of Korean marriages have considerably changed, due to the impact of western values. There are three stages of the Korean marriage ceremony: before the ceremony (Sun-rye), the ceremony (Bon-rye) and after the ceremony (Hu-rye). The research examined how these marriage customs were influenced by science and industrialization. The instruments were 750 questionnaires, analyzed through data processing and personal interviews with 25 married women. The data were analyzed by making use of the SPSS program using frequency analysis and $x^2$-test. The results suggested that, since 1960, Korean marriage ceremonies mainly conformed to the marriage customs of traditional society. Since 1970, traditional customs of the before the ceremony (Sun-rye) process have been, in large part, eliminated. The ceremony (Bon-rye) process has been changed to western style, and the after the ceremony (Hu-rye) process has been altered to some degree.

  • Purpose: Recently as couples have only one or two children, they concern about their children's optimal health. Furthermore, as the basic principles of Korean traditional prenatal education (Taegyo) are supported by scientific evidence, and as increasing numbers of pregnant women are recognizing Taegyo refresh, the practice of Taegyo is growing. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with the practice of Taegyo among pregnant Korean women. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, survey study of 228 pregnant women recruited at a health center in South Korea using a convenience sampling method. The instruments included the perception of Taegyo scale, the spouse's support scale, the self-confidence for infant care scale, and the practice of Taegyo scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses. Results: The results of the stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that the following factors accounted for 26.5% of the variance in the practice of Taegyo: the perception of Taegyo, family income. Conclusion: Consequently, this result showed that the pregnant women were influenced by family income, spouses' support as requisite factors, and also they developed the level of self-confidence for infant care and the perception of Taegyo as self-care agency for the practice of Taegyo. The present study findings will add to the accumulated knowledge of health care professionals about the cultural factors involved in the practice of Taegyo and the traditional cultural beliefs and culture-specific health promoting behaviors of ethnic minority pregnant women to provide culturally competent care for them.

  • This study aims to classify and examine Changjak Gukak composed by composers who majored in Western music and help the composers with the composition of Changjak Gukak. As a result, it was investigated that Korean traditional musical elements have been used on the basis of the traditional or modern Western composition technique. The traditional composition techniques such as motive, theme, keys, homophony, contrapuntal methods, fugue form, sonata form, baroque concerto form and borrowing of Western art works have been used, and the contemporary composition techniques such as timber melody, a-tonality, irregular meter, poly rhythm and aleatory have been used. In addition, it reflects the Korean expression and identity by applying the Korean traditional instruments, Sigimsae, Jangdan, traditional scale and mode, form and melody.

  • Science we have perceived as genuine science is based on western scientific enterprise, that is, western modern science(WMS). The K-12 science curriculum in Korea absolutely contains WMS content. Elkana(1981) criticized the indifference of comparative science in the field of science, whereas there have been a lot of comparative studies of art, religion, ethics, and politics. Science is the product not only based on 'western' culture but all cultural around the world including Korea. People have consistently observed and tested for such a long period of time all over the world. Traditional science of Korea can be related to multiculturalism, which has become important in many fields. Korea has a lot of great scientific enterprises, such as astronomical instruments of Chosun Dynasty and ancient data of natural phenomenon in Samguk-saki or Samguk-Yusa. It is expected that students will consider them as more 'objective' and 'realistic' things rather than 'artistic' and 'distinguished' things. Astronomy was also very important in the East because they believed sky as king, which results in the development of a lot of astronomical data and instruments in Korean history. In this study, we developed three units of science programs using astronomical enterprises in Korea: 1) Activities with our sundial, Angbuilgu:, 2) data interpretation of natural phenomenon in ancient Korea, 3) experience in Gyeongbokgung Palace. From these programs, we expect that students will develop a profound understanding and take pride in our science.

  • Nakdong technique is an unfamiliar scorching treatment using an iron heated in a kiln over 1000℃. It is a typical convention in Asian countries to treat Nakdong on the surface of paulownia species. The scorching treatment changes the surface characteristics as well as the color of the wood. This study focused on the effects of functional features such as water resistance, anti-mold, anti-termite, and sound improvement because this treatment is usually used on paulownia wood-bodied musical instruments surface. It took 28'57" for Nakdong-iron treated surface to absorb a droplet of water. The absorbance time of iron treated surface was longer than that of torch treated one. There was no noticeable effect on the anti-mold test. On the anti-termite test, there was nearly 3% more mean mass loss on the torch samples than controlled and iron treated ones. In examining the sound radiation coefficient before and after Nakdong treatment, the Nakdong-iron treated surface showed an increase in the average value of 1.2 m4/kg s, which means that it has sound quality improvement. Through this research, the Nakdong technique results are expected to be used as basic-data for further research and give a practical idea for using the traditional treatment method on the wood surface.

  • The position fixing is the first essential in any offshore activity. At sea, position is almost always related to fixed points on land. The traditional method of the position fixing of a vessel is by double horizontal sextant angles observed between three fixed stations, plotted as a graphical resection using station pointers. Of recent, offshore fixing progresses in simple object of navigation and fishery, and it is tending to use and develop ocean and coast compositly. Therefore, we compared and analyzed deviation of fixed point for more accurate offshore fixing. This paper used only navigation instruments such as NNSS, Loran-C, Omega involved in long range and world wide among the methods of E. P. F. (Electromagnetic Position Fixing).

  • Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is potentially a powerful and revolutionary technology for environmental analysis. It is supported by a large body of scientific and experiential knowledge. The instrumentation is well-developed, with easy-to-use, highly dependable instruments, but at the same time it is still developing, particularly with the production of more portable and rapid instruments, and more powerful software. NIRS is used globally in numerous industries for commodity analysis. Yet NIRS is largely unknown in the field of environmental chemistry and monitoring, and is not even routinely used in soil analysis, where the research literature on NIRS extends over four decades. Part of the explanation for the poor visibility of NIRS is the fact that NIRS is not routinely taught in Chemistry programs in universities, where most environmental chemists and environmental technicians are trained. This presentation examines the unique capabilities of NIRS, such as rapid, real-time analysis; analysis of whole samples; simultaneous analysis of multiple constituents; cost-effectiveness, and portability, as they match needs for analysis in several environmental areas. Examples of NIRS usage and published and unpublished results will be described for such areas as soil and sediment analysis; water quality monitoring; and nutrient loading in application of manures and sewage sludge (biosolids) to land. Present barriers to the use of NIRS in environmental analysis will be discussed. It is argued that emerging environmental problems and increasing attention to some traditional problems will enhance the application of NIRS in the future.
