  • In order to optimize an agricultural tractor clutch mechanism system, its structural static and kinematic mechanism were analyzed. The operating force of the mechanical tractor clutch system is currently not appropriate to drive comfortably. So it is needed to reduce the clutch operating force by applying advanced engineering design techniques. In the present study, an optimization technology is applied to the design of tractor clutch systems to reduce the operating force. As a result of the optimization using 2 link-angles and 1 link-length which are the main design variables of the clutch linkage system, the maximum pushing force of the maximum clutch pedal was found 182.8N, 14% decreased compared to the existing clutch system. The effectiveness of the optimum design is certified by menas of an experiment.

  • An attempt was made to mechanize the infield transportation system in a cocoa plantation. A small trailer was designed and fabricated and used with a commercial 2-wheeled walking tractor modified into a 4-wheeled tractor-trailer unit to suit the plantation conditions. The transporter had a capacity of 800 kg and could be loaded with about 1000 cocoa pods at a time and was well within the towing capability of a 10 hp tractor. Time and motion studies were conducted on a 30 acre, 6 year old cocoa plantation intercropped with coconut to compare manual and the tractor-trailer combination in relation to infield transportation. The total time taken to harvest 80 trees manually was computed to be 24 manuhours per hectare whilst the tractor-trailer combination required 18manhours.

  • This is a basic study analyzing emissions of an agricultural tractor during tillage operations. In this study, CO, THC, NOx, and PM considered as emission factor were analyzed during plow and rotary tillage operation by the tractor. Engine torque and rotational speed were measured through ECU. Engine power was calculated using engine torque and rotational speed. The emissions was calculated based on the number of units, rated power, load factor, and operating time. Results showed that the load factor was calculated almost twice, which was higher than 0.48. It was also observed that the emission of the tractor was variable for different agricultural operations because tractor loads were different based on operations. There was a difference in emissions due to differences in plow and rotary working hours. To estimate the emission of agricultural tractor based field operations in detail, it is necessary to consider TAF (Transient Adjustment Factor) and DFA (Deterioration factor). In the future, TAF and DFA will be considered to estimate emissions of the agricultural tractor. Finally, results of this study can contribute to the literature to estimate tractor emissions accurately.

  • Purpose: To ascertain the increase of the farm income that predominantly relies on human resources by mechanizing Welsh onion harvesting, a tractor-mounted Welsh onion harvester was developed in this study. Method: An experiment for evaluating harvesting performance was performed for the developed Welsh onion harvester in an actual Welsh onion farm. The harvest performance was evaluated at the tractor running speeds of 5.0 cm/s, 11.4 cm/s and 15.8 cm/s, by comparing the operating efficiency, harvest rate, and damage rate of the Welsh onion harvester. Results: The performance of the harvester was rated as very good, with a 100% harvest rate, regardless of tractor running speed. Furthermore, it is shown that work efficiency of the harvester is expected to increase as the running speed increases. Nonetheless, the damage rate of the harvested Welsh onions at running speeds 5.0 cm/s, 11.4 cm/s, and 15.8 cm/s, increased correspondingly and proportionally to speeds from 4.55% to 6.53% and to 11.29%. The residual amount of soil on the harvested Welsh onions was about 0.24% of their weight showing excellent soil-removal performance of the harvester. Conclusion: The developed Welsh onion harvester is believed to improve the labor productivity and cultivation environment of Welsh onion farmhouses by the mechanization of the harvesting process that is currently associated with the largest amount of labor hours.

  • Purpose: To obtain the dynamic characteristics (spring stiffness and damping coefficient) of a rubber mount supporting a tractor cabin in order to develop a simulation model of an agricultural tractor. Methods: The KS M 6604 rubber mount test method was used to test the dynamic characteristics of the rubber mount. Of the methods proposed in the standard, the resonance method was used. To perform the test according to the standard, a base excitation test device was constructed and the accelerations were measured. Results: Displacement transmissibility was measured by varying the frequency from 3-30 Hz. The vibration transmissibility at resonance was confirmed, and the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficient of the rubber mount were obtained. The front rubber mount has a spring constant of 1247 N/mm and damping ratio of 3.27 Ns/mm, and the rear rubber mount has a spring constant of 702 N/mm and damping ratio of 1.92 Ns/mm. Conclusions: The parameters in the z-direction were obtained in this study. In future studies, we will develop a more complete tractor simulation model if the parameters for the x- and y-directions can be obtained.

  • According to the field test, the transient power transmission efficiency of a tractor driveline fluctuated in a range of 56 to 86% and the mean value was about 72.5%. Therefore, the constant efficiency model commonly used for a simulation of power performance was not proper far predicting such a variable of efficiency. In order to predict power efficiency more accurately, new concepts of the maximum efficiency and drag torque were introduced and a new model based on the these concepts was proposed. The difference between measured and model-predicted efficiencies was about 1.5% in average with a standard deviation of 1.1%. The new power efficiency model was expected to enhance the accuracy of predicting power transmission efficiencies of tractor drivelines.

  • This study was performed to analyze the holding pace and decision factors of tractor in Korea and Japan, which probably should be used for making master plan of agricultural mechanization. The logistic function is used for holding pace estimation of tractor, and log-log function for analysis of decision factors. The results of this study are as follows: First, the increasing rate of the total amount of holding tractor power in Korea has been over that in Japan during 1980∼、94 which is now, however, under Japan. So, it could be forecasted that the per tractor holding power in Japan will increase continuously, and will be over 30PS in the short run. Second, the most important one of decision factors to support tractor demand is agricultural income in Korea, but on the other hand Non-Agricultural Income in Japan. From these, the fast increase of total amount of holding power of tractor in Korea could not expected, because Korea Agriculture has some difficulties to increase Agricultural Income. There are differences on the holding pace and decision factors of tractor between Korea and Japan, therefore, the plan of agricultural mechanization should be made in accordance with self-features.

  • When a tractor travels slope lands, problems of operator safety and the reduction of job efficiency usually occur. Therefore, maintaining the tractor body being horizontal is critical to improve the security of traveling and the job performance. An experiment was made in a soil bin using the experimental model system built and equipped with a leveling control system. Adaptability of the control system was tested and investigated by analyzing system response in time and frequency domains. Control response time of hydraulic cylinder with 10lpm flow rate on a step input of 10$^{\circ}$slope was about 0.42sec. And it showed a linearly increasing trend without any hunching state. A steady state error of 0.6$^{\circ}$occurred but it was negligible. The hydraulic control system showed a little phase differences within the range of 0.4Hz input frequency. The experimental model showed that implementation of the proposed tractor control system to on slope lands tractor was feasible.
