Condition Diagnosis & On-line Monitoring Technology on the Traction Motor for Railway Rolling Stock (철도차량 견인전동기의 상태진단 및 상시감시 기술)

  • This paper presents the technology of condition diagnosis & life estimation on insulation system of the traction motor. In the non-destructive methods for diagnosis of coil insulation state, residual dielectric strength is estimated by the D-map which consist of the partial discharge quantity Q and average degradation degree $\Delta$. In the operating history of machine, the N-Y life estimation method is based on the stop-starting numbers and operating times with considering each degradation factor by the thermal, electrical and heat-cycle stress. With the on-line conditioning monitoring on the currents of traction motors, detecting the abnormal operating state due to bearing faults, stator or armature faults, eccentricity related faults and broken rotor bars can be performed.

  • Traction motors driven by several type inverters have been subjected to increasing demands for higher operating temperature, more demands for duty cycles, higher starting current, frequent voltage transients and finally severe environmental exposure. For applications to inverter duty, traction motors needs a special insulation system, which has characteristics of increased bond strength, lower operating temperature and higher turn-to-tum insulation. Also it needs major contributors to insulation life and reliability of motors, which more considered by temperature, voltage, frequency, rise time, pulse configuration, wire thickness and insulation materials. In this paper, to evaluate of reliability and expected life, it is analyzed the several stresses and their degradation mechanism on insulation system of AC traction motor.

  • Method for contact failure mitigation is studied in this paper. The focus is laid on the contact shape that eventually influences the internal stresses. Contact mechanics is consulted within the frame of plane problem. Hertzian contact, rounded punch and uniform traction profiles are considered. Frictional as well as frictionless contact is also considered. As results, the higher traction profile induced by the rounded punch reveals the greatest among the considered shapes. Therefore, it is suggested to increase the edge radius as large as possible if a contact body of punch shape needs to be designed. It is also found that uniform traction cannot always provide the solution of contact failure mitigation.

  • An inverter-driven induction motor is usually adapted to the traction motor for a high speed drive system requiring safety, reliability, performance, compact size owing to the space and weight alloted for attaching to train, etc. and AC Traction motor for G7 train will be operated in the worst condition such as mechanical vibration, limited mounting space, severe thermal stress, inverter with non-sinusoidal voltage waveform, dust and so on. therefore, design procedure must be carefully carried out wi th considering the motor size, vibration and thermal expansion of rotor bars, insulation system, reliability of frame, as well as output characteristics. In this paper, we will inform the characteristics and design of the traction motor for G7 train and also analyze the test result of it.

  • Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) causes destruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and can lead to occlusal changes such as anterior open bite in some patients. Consequently, these patients may experience difficulty in chewing food items and exhibit abnormal functional habits such as bruxism, preventing healing of the TMJ condyles. Treatment protocols include the use of traction appliances to reduce stress on the condyles. Unstable occlusions can lead to weakness of the masticatory muscles which, in turn, worsen the occlusal changes and complicate pain management. Therefore, the current study evaluated the condition of the masseter muscle using ultrasonography and educated patients on the execution of gum-chewing exercises for muscle strengthening. It also aimed to assess the effects of traction appliances and strengthening exercises on the masticatory muscles of patients with occlusal changes caused by TMJ OA.

A FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF THE DISPLACEMENT AND STRESS DISTRIBUTION OF HUMAN DRY MANDIBLE DURING THE MANDIBULAR FIRST MOLAR CERVICAL TRACTION (유한요소법에 의한 하악제 1 대구치의 Cervical Traction의 효과에 관한 역학적 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to analyze the displacement and stress distribution in the mandible according to the pulling directions during mandibular first molar cervical traction after mandibular second molar extraction. The 3-dimensional finite element method(FEM) was used for a mathematical model composed of 594 elements and 1019 nodes. An orthodontic force, 450 gm, was applied to the each mandibular first molar in parallel, and below the occlusal plane by $7^{\circ}\;and\;25^{\circ}$ and meet the midsagittal plane by $40^{\circ}$ toward posterior direction. The results were as follows: 1. Mandibular teeth were displaced in more downward, posterior and lateral direction. Especially high stress was noted in case of parallel pull than in case of below the occlusal plane by $7^{\circ}\;and\;25^{\circ}$. 2. Mandibular first molar was moved bodily. 3. Generally, alveolar bone, mandibular body, ascending ramus and mandibular angle portion were displaced in downward, posterior and lateral direction. But coronoid process was displaced in downward, forward and lateral direction, and anterior and inner middle portion of condyle head and neck were displaced in downward, forward and medial direction, and posterior and outer middle portion of condyle head and neck were displaced in upward, forward and medial direction. 4. Maximum stress was observed at the condyle head and neck portion. With steeper direction of force, condyle head and neck showed more stress than parallel relation to the occlusal plane.

  • The steady state thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) are analyzed for hypocycloid, symmetric airfoil and symmetric lip type rigid inclusions embedded in infinite elastic solids, using Boganoff's complex variable approach in plane thermoplasticity. Two thermal conditions are considered, one with an uniform heat flow disturbed by an insulated rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape and the other with an uniform heat flow disturbed by a rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape with fixed boundary temperature. The tendencies of TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape are somewhat different from those of traction free cusp cracks. However, if k=-1, the non-dimensionalized TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape become those of traction free cusp cracks like the tendencies of the SIF's under mechanical loading conditions. The thermal stress and displacement components for a rigid circular inclusion of radius Ro are drived from the results of a hypocycloid crack type rigid inclusion.

Numerical result of complex quick time behavior of viscoelastic fluids in flow domains with traction boundaries

  • Here we demonstrate complex transient behavior of viscoelastic liquid described numerically with the Leonov model in straight and contraction channel flow domains. Finite element and implicit Euler time integration methods are employed for spatial discretization and time marching. In order to stabilize the computational procedure, the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the constitutive equation with SUPG and DEVSS algorithms is implemented. For completeness of numerical formulation, the so called traction boundaries are assigned for flow inlet and outlet boundaries. At the inlet, finite traction force in the flow direction with stress free condition is allocated whereas the traction free boundary is assigned at the outlet. The numerical result has illustrated severe forward-backward fluctuations of overall flow rate in inertial straight channel flow ultimately followed by steady state of forward flow. When the flow reversal occurs, the flow patterns exhibit quite complicated time variation of streamlines. In the inertialess flow, it takes much more time to reach the steady state in the contraction flow than in the straight pipe flow. Even in the inertialess case during startup contraction flow, quite distinctly altering flow patterns with the lapse of time have been observed such as appearing and vanishing of lip vortices, coexistence of multiple vortices at the contraction comer and their merging into one.

  • Under physiological and pathological conditions, mechanical forces generated from cells themselves or transmitted from extracellular matrix (ECM) through focal adhesions (FAs) and adherens junctions (AJs) are known to play a significant role in regulating various cell behaviors. Substantial progresses have been made in the field of mechanobiology towards novel methods to understand how cells are able to sense and adapt to these mechanical forces over the years. To address these issues, this review will discuss recent advancements of traction force microscopy (TFM), intracellular force microscopy (IFM), and monolayer stress microscopy (MSM) to measure multiple aspects of cellular forces exerted by cells at cell-ECM and cell-cell junctional intracellular interfaces. We will also highlight how these methods can elucidate the roles of mechanical forces at interfaces of cell-cell/cell-ECM in regulating various cellular functions.

Biomechanical analysis for different mandibular total distalization methods with clear aligners: A finite element study

  • Objective: The purpose of this finite element method (FEM) study was to analyze the biomechanical differences and tooth displacement patterns according to the traction direction, methods, and sites for total distalization of the mandibular dentition using clear aligner treatment (CAT). Methods: A finite element analysis was performed on four FEM models using different traction methods (via a precision cut hook or button) and traction sites (mandibular canine or first premolar). A distalization force of 1.5 N was applied to the traction site by changing the direction from -30 to +30° to the occlusal plane. The initial tooth displacement and von Mises stress on the clear aligners were analyzed. Results: All CAT-based total distalization groups showed an overall trend of clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of the occlusal plane as the force direction varied. Mesiodistal tipping of individual teeth was more prominent than that of bodily movements. The initial displacement pattern of the mandibular teeth was more predominant based on the traction site than on the traction method. The elastic deformation of clear aligners is attributed to unintentional lingual tipping or extrusion of the mandibular anterior teeth. Conclusions: The initial tooth displacement can vary according to different distalization strategies for CAT-based total distalization. Discreet application and biomechanical understanding of traction sites and directions are necessary for appropriate mandibular total distalization.
