  • In this material, a traction motor for light railway vehicle was developed. Aluminium -Diecasting process was selected in order to reduce the manufacturing cost of making rotor bars and rotor rings of the motor, instead of copper or copper alloy rotor bars and rotor rings. And the results of experiment satisfied the international standard IEC 349-2.

  • In this paper, a speed estimation method at coasting operation in an induction motor speed sensorless control for railway vehicle traction systems is presented. At coasting operation, there is no information obtaining rotor speed since all switches of an inverter are turned off. The inverter frequency should be synchronized with the rotor frequency for repowering at coasting condition. The proposed method injects DC current to the induction motor during a short time, then the flux angle and rotor speed needed for control can be estimated rapidly.

  • Since recent inverters are formed IGBT VVVF inverter its switching speed has been increased relative to the conventional inverters and the motor design based on the switching surge voltage at the inverter output is very important factor. Therefore, motor and inverter should be designed to have the optimal characteristics by considering the mutually limited conditions. On this research the design technology characteristics for inverter driving traction moor is compared to the products in Korea and the analysis is performed. Thus, it is intend to re-estimate the technology level and introduce the products by HHI, which is driving on Seoul subway line 6 since December, 2000.

  • The purpose of this paper is to acquire the data related to insulation evaluation of hybrid vehicle traction motors. We carried out a comparative analysis on Insulation Resistance (IR) and Polarization Index (PI) of motor stators according to IEEE Std. 43 and IEC 60085-1 for insulation resistance test standard of rotating machinery. Maximum test voltage which is applied to between a phase and enclosure was set at 500 V. The IRs of the used motors were lower than those of the new ones. The PIs of the used motor were ranges from 0.74 to 1.1 and did not meet the recommendation basis 2 for insulation level H. From the experimental results, we could prepare parameters and basis for insulation evaluation of motor stators by comparative analysis of the IR and the PI.

  • KHST(Korean High-Speed Train, 350km/h), composed of 7 cars that are 2 power cars, 2 motorized car and 3 trailer cars, has been developed and is under on-line test. To verify hte design requirements about the functions and traction performances of this train, KRRI(Korea Railroad Research Institute) decided to evaluate traction performances of the train during on-line test. For this purpose, such as torque, velocity, voltage and current, must be measured. BRRI has developed the measurement system that can be measured vast and various signals effectively. In this paper, we introduce traction performances of KHST. The traction measurement items are focused on the verification of motor block performances.

  • 본 논문은 FEA 기법을 이용하여 40kW급 HEV용 Traction 모터의 설계 및 고효율화를 위한 회전자 영구자석의 Eddy Current loss 저감 방안에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 먼저 FEA 기법을 이용하여 40kW급 HEV용 Traction 모터 설계 및 특성해석을 수행하여 FEA 해석기법의 타당성을 확보하였다. 또한 Traction 모터의 손실 저감을 위해 magnet부분의 eddy current loss 저감방안에 대해 논하였으며, FEA 기법을 이용하여 회전자 magnet이 Solid, 1/2, 1/4, 1/14 segments로 나눈 타입에 따른 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과 magnet형태를 기존의 Solid 타입에서 14segments 타입으로 분할 시, magnet 내부의 current path가 줄어들어 eddy current loss가 가장 많이 저감됨을 알 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 HEV용 traction 모터의 고효율, 고성능화 설계방안을 도출 할 수 있었다.

  • Damage often occurs on the surface of railway wheels due to wheel-rail contact fatigue. It should be removed before reaching wheel failure, because wheel failure can cause derailment with loss of life and property. The increase or decrease of the contact fatigue lift by the metal removal of the contact surface were investigated by many researchers, but they have not considered initial residual stress and traction force. The railway wheel has the initial residual stress formed during the manufacturing process, and the residual stress is changed by thermal stress induced by braking. The traction force and residual stress are operated on wheels of locomotive and electric motor vehicle. In this study, the effect of metal removal depth on the contact fatigue life for a railway wheel has been evaluated by applying lolling contact fatigue test. The effect of the traction force and metal removal on the contact fatigue life has been estimated by finite element analysis. It has been found that the initial residual stress determines the amount of metal removal depth if the traction coefficient is less than 0.15. If the traction coefficient is greater than 0.2, however, the amount of metal removal depth is independent on the intial residual stress.

  • This study investigates the design factors of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) which is applied to Hybrid electric vehicle as a driving power. Recently, there are many studies of IPMSM for application to Hybrid Electric Vehicle, because IPMSM has characteristics of high torque, high power density and high efficiency which come from reluctance torque due to difference of inductance as well as magnet torque. This study analyzes the inductance and design characteristics of IPMSM by using finite element method and focuses on design and analysis of IPMSM which can operates with high efficiency at low speed range. For this embodiment, magnet shape is changed from conventional block type to arc type without any change of outline dimension of motor and this change of magnet shape makes it possible to increase back EMF and sinusoidal waveform. Analysis results are verified by test of improved and embodied motor. As a test result , increased back EMF and sharply decrease of harmonics are secured and through this contribution of reduced fuel consumption of Hybrid electric vehicle is expected.

Comparison of Traction Motor design and characteristics for battery driven hybrid tram (무가선 트램용 추진 전동기 설계 및 특성 비교)

  • The latest generation of tram is low-floor design, various nations in europe and japan have developed battery driven hybrid trams that combine battery and wiring. Battery driven tram system is achieved by contactless power supply system, thus system is needed high efficiency, high power and low weight traction motor for maximization of energy efficiency. Research from abroad is still in induction motor(IM) application, and it is not meet the efficiency and the power per unit volume in IPMSM. In this paper, we design compare IM and IPMSM to apply battery driven tram, and then compare these motors. To design the motor, we estimate the loading condition at first. Loading condition includes rolling resistance, air-drag resistance, and slope resistance. Based on the loading condition by estimation, we determine the power and compute rated voltage and rated current. In this paper, voltage is limited by battery voltage level. As a result, volume about IM is 1.98 times bigger than IPMSM under same condition. Even though IPMSM is bigger than IM in power density per volume, we consider more factors for actual application because there are demagnetization of permanent magnet in IPMSM and so on by external environment conditions.
