During the structural design of urban over-track high-rise buildings, two problems are most likely encountered: the abrupt change of story stiffness between the podium and the upper towers, as well as the demand for train-induced vibration control. Traditional earthquake-resistant structures have to be particularly designed with transfer stories to meet the requirement of seismic control under earthquakes, and thus horizontal seismic isolation techniques are recommended to solve the transfer problem. The function of mitigating the vertical subway-induced vibration can be integrated into the isolation system including thick rubber bearings and 3D composite vibration control devices. Engineering project cases are presented in this paper for a more comprehensive understanding of the engineering practice and research frontiers of urban over-track high-rise buildings in China.

The new suspension, called ISU(In-arm suspension system) was developed for Infantry Fighting Vehicle. During vehicle field test, early failure of ISU's sealing system was occurred after driving the paved road. From the failure analysis, ISU's displacement data was obtained. In analysis of PSD data, track induced vibration which has high frequency and small amplitude characteristics, was dominant. Such track vibration would result in early seal failure because of friction increase and lack of lubrication. To simulate track vibration environment in laboratory, seals were tested under the condition of 20Hz, ${\pm}1$, ${\pm}2mm$ amplitude. The same type of seal failure occurred in vehicle test, was reproduced in the lab test under ${\pm}1mm$ amplitude. From the test results, the durability of improved seal was increased by 2.5 times compared with the previous one.
A finite element approach is presented to examine ground vibration characteristics under various moving loads in a homogeneous half-space. Four loading modes including single load, double load, four-load, and twenty-load were simulated in a finite element analysis to observe their influence on ground vibrations. Four load moving speeds of 60, 80, 100, and 120 m/s were adopted to investigate the influence of train speed to the ground vibrations. The results demonstrated that the loading mode in a finite element analysis is reliable for train-induced vibration simulations. Additionally, a three-dimensional finite element model (3D FEM) was developed to investigate the dynamic responses of a track-ballast-embankment-ground system subjected to moving loads induced by high-speed trains. Results showed that vibration attenuations and breaks exist in the simulated wave fronts transiting through different medium materials. These tendencies are a result of the difference in the Rayleigh wave speeds of the medium materials relative to the speed of the moving train. The vibration waves induced by train loading were greatly influenced by the weakening effect of sloping surfaces on the ballast and embankment. Moreover, these tendencies were significant when the vibration waves are at medium and high frequency levels. The vibration waves reflected by the sloping surface were trapped and dissipated within the track-ballast-embankment-ground system. Thus, the vibration amplitude outside the embankment was significantly reduced.
In the areas susceptible to vibration and noise induced by railway traffic such as downtown area and stations under railway lines, the vibration and the structure-borne noise can be solved by floating slab track system separating the entire track structure from its sub-structure using anti-vibration mat or springs. In other countries, the core technologies for vibration-proof design and vibration isolator - one of key components - have been developed and many installation experiences have been accumulated. However, in Korea, since the design technology of system and components are not yet developed, the foreign systems are being introduced without any adjustment. Thus, in this study, the vibration isolator has been developed and its performance are investigated by the dynamic analysis of a station structure under railways lines and the floating slab track system. For this purpose, the loads transferred from the vibration isolator of the floating slab track were evaluated by train running simulation considering vehicle-track interaction, and then the dynamic analysis of station structure subjected to these loads was performed. The dynamic analysis results show that the proposed floating slab track can reduce the vibration of structure by about 25dB compared with that in conventional ballast track without floating system.
Recently, environmental vibration by train operation has been getting such an attention that the ISO puts it into the environmental vibration regulation. However, the reasonable and efficient countermeasures against such a kind of vibration is not well established, especially in residential areas near the railroad. Therefore, it is very important to estimate the ground vibration induced by the train operation for the design and construction of track supporting structures as well as structures near the track. In this study a model estimating dynamic load on track due to train operation and analysis technique of propagation of ground vibration were developed. Futhermore, the estimated vibration from this model was compared with the actual measurement data in the field and found to be reasonably acceptable.

The recording density of a hard disk drive(HDD) has been increased so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD for the personal computer already reaches several hundred giga-bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize higher recording density. Especially, airflow inside the HDD cavity has been concerned as the rotational speed of the disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the off-track vibration of a head stack assembly(HSA) as the airflow collides with the E-block, suspensions, and sliders, i.e., the flow induced vibration(FIV). This problem is one of the most significant sources of the track mis-registration(TMR) so that it must be resolved. In this study, disk damper shape is modified to minimize the influence of airflow on the HSA. Modified disk dampers, which change the flow field of the inside cavity of a HDD, show good effects not only on the disk vibration but also on the off-track vibration of a HSA. Vibrations of E-block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed with commercial CFD program to verify these effects.

The important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. The main contributors for rolling noise are the sleepers, rail and wheels. In order to analyze and predict rolling noise, it is necessary to understand the vibrating behaviors of railway tracks, as well as the wheels. In the present paper, theoretical modelings of the railway track are reviewed in terms of the rolling noise, and they are applied for the three representative types of domestic railway tracks operated: the conventional ballasted track, KTX ballasted track and KTX concrete track. The characteristics of waves propagating along rails were investigated and compared between the tracks. The tracks were modeled as discretely supported Timoshenko beams and compared in terms of the averaged squared amplitude of velocity which is directly related to the sound radiation from the rails.

Ground-borne vibration is one of the main causes of environmental impact from subway systems. The vibration resulting from track-train interaction is transuutted through the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground to adjacent buildings. This paper provides a summary of proposed noise and vibration criteria, a review of the ground vibration propagation mechanism and the theoretical isolation effectivenesss of each of the following underground transit systems : track, tunnel and vehicle itself.
It is of great importance to assure the running safety and ride comfort in designing the floating slab track for the mitigation of train-induced vibration. In this paper, for this, analyzed are the system requirements for the running safety and ride comfort, and then, the behavior of train and track at the transition zone between the floating slab track and the conventional concrete slab track according to several main design variables such as spring constant, damping coefficient, spacing and arrangement of isolators and slab length, using the dynamic analysis technique considering the train-track interaction. The results of numerical analysis demonstrate that the discontinuity of the support stiffness at the transition results in a drastic increase of the vertical vibration acceleration of the train body, wheel-rail interaction force, rail bending stress and uplift force. The increase becomes higher with the decrease of the spring constant of isolators and the increase of the isolator spacing, but the damping ratio does not significantly affect the behavior of train and track at the transition. Therefore, to assure the running safety and ride comfort, simultaneously increasing the effectiveness of vibration isolation, it is effective to minimize the relative vertical offset between the floating slab and the conventional track slab by adjusting the spring constant and spacing of isolators at the transition.
The noise from the elevated lines of rail transit has become a growing problem. This paper presents a new method for the rapid prediction of the structure-borne noise from steel or composite bridges, based on the receptance and Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), which is essential to the study of the generation mechanism and the design of a low-noise bridge. First, the vertical track-bridge coupled vibration equations in the frequency domain are constructed by simplifying the rail and the bridge as an infinite Timoshenko beam and a finite Euler-Bernoulli beam respectively. Second, all wheel/rail forces acting upon the track are computed by taking a moving wheel-rail roughness spectrum as the excitation to the train-track-bridge system. The displacements of rail and bridge are obtained by substituting wheel/rail forces into the track-bridge coupled vibration equations, and all spring forces on the bridge are calculated by multiplying the stiffness by the deformation of each spring. Then, the input power to the bridge in the SEA model is derived from spring forces and the bridge receptance. The vibration response of the bridge is derived from the solution to the power balance equations of the bridge, and then the structure-borne noise from the bridge is obtained. Finally, a tri-span continuous steel-concrete composite bridge is taken as a numerical example, and the theoretical calculations in terms of the vibration and noise induced by a passing train agree well with the field measurements, verifying the method. The influence of various factors on wheel/rail and spring forces is investigated to simplify the train-track-bridge interaction calculation for predicting the vibration and noise from steel or composite bridges.
