Post-Infectional Biochemical Changes in Mulberry Due to Xanthomonas campestris pv. mori Induced Bacterial Leaf Spot

  • Post-infectional biochemical changes due to Xanthomonas campestris pv. mori (Xcm) infection in five elite mulberry varieties viz., $S_1$, $S_{1635}$, $V_1$, RF $S_{175}$ and JRH was studied under inoculated condition. It was revealed that total soluble sugar and protein content was significantly declined in all the varieties due to X. campestris infection. Total phenol content was at par prior to inoculation in all varieties, but it was significantly increased in $S_1$, RF $S_{175}$, $S_{1635}$ and JRH 7 days after inoculation. The correlation coefficient (r) between total soluble sugar and total phenol content was found positive (r = 0.825) and statistically significant. Similarly, correlation coefficient (r) between total soluble protein and phenol content was found positive (r = 0.897) and statistically significant. The present study indicates that X. campestris infected leaves are nutritionally inferior in quality and the duration of phenol production in a mulberry variety play decisive role on disease resistance.nce.

Phenol을 이용한 균주에 의한 Trichloroethylene분해 (Biodegradation of Triehloroethylene by a Phenol-Utilizing Bacterium)

  • The bacterial strain which utilizes phenol and degrade TCE was isolated from an industrial waste site. The bacterial strain was named as T5-7 and identified as an Acinetobacter species. After phenol-induction, the strain T5-7 removed TCE efficiently without cell growth. So, it seems that TCE degradation was not related to cell growth. TCE degradation increased when initial cell concentrations of phenol-grown T5-7 were high. In the presence of phenol, initial degradation of TCE was delayed but total amount of degradation was not affected at final stage. The strain cultured in 0.1% yeast extract did not degrade TCE, which indicates that phenol induction was essential to the TCE degradation.

Assessment of Antioxidant Activity of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Peels by Various Extraction Solvents

  • This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activities, total phenol, and flavonoid contents of 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, and chloroform-methanol (CM, 2:1, v/v) extracts from garlic (Allium sativum L.) peels. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical and ABTS [2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt] radical scavenging activity, ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Total phenol and flavonoid were in a range of 32.59-63.05 mg CAE/g, 5.26-9.22 mg QE/g, respectively. Total phenol and flavonoid were predominant with the values of $63.05{\pm}0.20mgCAE/g$ and $9.22{\pm}0.17mgQE/g$ in 70% ethanol extract. Additionally, 70% ethanol extract also displayed the strongest antioxidant activity followed by 70% methanol extract and CM extract in all assays. These results showed that garlic peel can be used as natural antioxidant in nutraceutical preparations to prevent human diseases.

Drying Condition Affects Total Phenol Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Hizikia fusiformis

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of drying methods on the polyphenol contents and antioxidant activities of Hizikia fusiformis. The seaweed was dried using four different conditions: vacuum drying (VD) at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ and hot-air drying (HD) at $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. After drying, the total phenol content, DPPH and nitrite scavenging activities of the water extracts were determined. The total phenol contents were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the vacuum dried samples than the hot-air dried samples. DPPH radical was scavenged 82.67% and 83.45% by VD-20 and VD-30, and 70.44% and 71.23% by HD-40 and HD-60, respectively. At pH 1.2, Hizikia fusiformis scavenged 87.43%, 88.45%, 72.14% and 73.45% of nitrite by the treatment VD-20, VD-30, HD-40 and HD-60, respectively. Interestingly, the nitrite scavenging activity was much more reduced at pH 3.0 than at pH 1.2. Through these experiments, we were able to show that the drying conditions affect the total phenol contents and antioxidant capacities of Hizikia fusiformis.

낙동강 수계 페놀처리를 위한 정수처리시스템 평가 (Evaluation of Water Treament System for Phenol Removal in the Nakdong River Basin)

  • Repeated phenol spill in the Nakdong River has been a big issue in Korea since 1991. In this study, treatment of phenol in each water treatment process and total water treatment system is evaluated. Phenol was highly volatile, easily oxidized by ozone, and readily absorbed onto GAC. When there was phenol of 0.3mg/L in water, by ozonation of 1mg/L or by GAC adsorption with EBCT of 10minutes or longer, it could be treated to lower than 0.005mg/L, the national drinking water standard of phenol. Even when a sufficient contact time(70minutes) was allowed, only 35 to 40% of phenol could be removed by powdered activated carbon(PAC). Based on the test results, it can be concluded that 1.0mg/L or less concentration of phenol can be treated at the plants adopting the combination process of ozone and GAC down to the safe level. In this study, removal characteristics for phenol were evaluated with the existing pilot plant and demo plant in different advanced water treatment processes(AWTPs). In the future, studies on changes in oxidation and adsorption characteristics caused by competitive matters such as DOC and removal characteristics by other various AWTPs including ozone/filter adsorber need to be performed.

MLE type MBBR을 이용한 페놀화합물 함유폐수의 처리특성 (Characteristics of Phenolic Wastewater Treatment using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor in the MLE Process)

  • Nutrient removal from synthetic wastewater was investigated using a MLE (Modified-Ludzack Ettinger) type MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), with different phenol ($C_6H_5OH$) concentrations, in order to determine the inhibition effects of phenol on biological nutrient removal and the biodegradation of phenolic wastewater. The wastewater was prepared by mixing a solution of molasses with known amounts of phenol and nutrients. The experiments were conducted in a lab-scale MLE type MBBR, operated with four different phenol concentrations (0, 67, 100 and 168mg/L) in the synthetic feed. Throughout the experiments, the ratio of the phenolic COD concentration to the total COD was varied from 0 to 1. Throughout batch test, the SNR (Specific Nitrification Rate) and SDNR (Specific Denitrification Rate) were significantly influenced by changes of the phenol concentration. Phenol was inhibitory to the nitrification/denitrification process, and showed greater inhibition with higher initial phenol concentrations. The SNR observed with 0, 67, 100 and 168mg phenol/L were very different like 10.12, 6.95, 1.51 and $0.35mg\;NH_{3^-}N/gMLVSS$ hr, respectively. Similarly, the SDNR observed at 0, 67, 100 and 168mg phenol/L were different like 0.322, 0.143, 0.049and 0.006mgN/gMLVSS day, respectively.

침지용액과 예열 처리가 감자 슬라이스의 냉장 중 갈변정도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dipping and Preheating Treatments on Susceptibility to Browning of Potato Slices During Cold Storage)

  • 감자 슬라이스를 CaCl$_2$ 용액과 chitosan 용액에 침지 하거나 혹은 이들 용액의 존재하에서 예열처리 한 후 냉장저장하여 침지 및 예열처리가 감자 슬라이스의 갈변정도, 페놀 함량, PPO 활성의 변화에 대한 영향을 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 감자 슬라이스의 L값은 감소하는 경향을 나타내었으나, CaPS는 2주까지 L값이 증가하였고, ChPS는 4주간 L값이 증가하였다(p < 0.05). 또한 예열처리에 의 한 병용 효과에 의해 L값이 가장 증가하였다(p < 0.05). 2. CaPS를 제외한 각 처리군은 total phenol 함량이 감소하였으며(p < 0.05) 예열처 리 한 감자 슬라이스의 total phenol 함량이 더욱 감소하였다(p < 0.05). chloro-genic aicd 함량은 HCaPS를 제외하고 total phenol 함 량의 변화와 같은 경향을 나타내었다. 3. PPO 활성은 침지 및 예열처리를 통하여 감소하였는데 예열처리에 의한 감자 슬라이스의 PPO 활성 이 더욱 감소하였다 이로부터 CaCl$_2$,및 chitosan 용액에 침지 및 예열처리가 갈변억제에 효과적인 것으로 생각되어지며 L값 은 증가하고 페놀함량과 PPO 활성이 감소하였다. 이 러한 효과는 열처리군에서 더 크게 나타났다.

최소 가공용 사과의 품종별 갈변정도 (Browning Degree of Various Apple Cultivars for Minimal Processing)

  • This study was carried out to select apple cultivars suited for the fresh cutting or minimal processing as investigating correlation between total phenol and ascorbic acid as browning factors and the enzymatic browning degree. In soluble solid-acid ratio, 'Gamhong' and 'Arisoo' were highest value of 71.69 and 71.52 compared with other cultivars. And the change of lightness (${\Delta}L$) and color (${\Delta}E$) in 'Gamhong' and 'Arisoo' showed lower than other cultivars while 'Arkansas black' was highest change of lightness and color as ${\Delta}L$ 8.27, ${\Delta}E$ 13.86 respectively. Total phenol and ascorbic acid contents in 'Arkansas black' were highest such as 334.3 mg GAE/100 g and 9.22 mg/100 g, respectively. And polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity also was the highest such as 14.43unit in 'Arkansas black'. The correlation test showed browning of apple was significantly dependent on ${\Delta}L$, ${\Delta}E$, total phenol, ascorbic acid contents and PPO activity (p<0.01). On the contrary, no significant correlation had been determined between the browning and ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO) activity. Thus, it seemed that the browning of apple was not only due to oxidation of ascorbic acid but also total phenol. It was suggested that 'Gamhong' and 'Arisoo' were suitable for fresh cutting or minimal processing.

나노 사이즈 TiO2 광촉매를 이용한 페놀 분해 (Degration of Phenol by Using Nano-sized TiO2 Photocatalysts)

  • In this study, we prepared nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles for various process variables by the diffusion flame reactor and we collected $TiO_2$ particles by thermophoresis. It is found that the size of $TiO_2$ particles increases, as the flame temperature or the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration increase or the total gas flow rate decreases. We investigated the photo-degradation of phenol wish the prepared $TiO_2$ particles. We found the optimum amounts of $TiO_2$ photocatalysts for our experimental apparatus and investigated the photo-degradation efficiencies of phenol, changing the process variables such as size of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts, phase ratio of rutile/anatase, concentration of phenol, input ratio of $O_2$. Degradation efficiencies of phenol were almost 95% in 15 minutes for the standard conditions of our experiments.

국내산 및 중국산 도토리 가루의 성분분석에 관한 연구 (Comparative Studies for Component Analysis in Acorn Powders from Korea and China)

  • This study was examined the chemical components and total phenol content in acorn powders of Korea and China. Korea acorn powder produced from consists of 6.85% crude protein, 3.57% crude fat and 3.33% crude ash. China acorn powder consists of 1.83% crude protein, 0.41% crude fat and 0.40% crude ash. The composition of unsaturated fatty acid of Korea acorn powder was slightly lower than China acorn powder, but there was no significant difference. The amino acid content of Korea acorn powder was higher than that of China acorn powder. Total phenol content of that Korea acorn powder was 20 mg/g, and that China acorn powder was 3.2 mg/g.
