The analysis performed here is aimed to increase the familiarity of hydrologic process especially for the small basins which are densely gaged. Kyung An and Mu Shim river basins are selected as a representative basin according to the criteria which UNESCO has established back in 1964 and being operated under the auspice of Ministry of Construction. The data exerted from these basins is utilized for the determination of characteristics of procipitation and runoff phenomena for the small basin, which is considered as a typical Korean samall watershed. The study found that the areal distribution of preciptation did not show any significant deviation from the point rainfall. Since the area studied is less than 20 km#, the pointrainfall may be safely utilized as a representative value for the area. Also the effect of elevation on the precipitation has a minor significance in the small area where the elevation difference is less than 200m. The methodology developed by Soil Conservation Service for determination of runoff value from precipitation is applied to find the suitability of the method to Korean river basin. The soil cover complex number or runoff curve number was determined by comsidering the type of soil, soil cover, land use and other factors such as antecedent moisture content. The average values of CN for Kyung An and Mushim river basins were found to be 63.9 and 63.1 respectively under AMC II, however, values obtained from soil cover complex were less than those from total precipitation and effective precipitation about 10-30%. It may be worth to note that an attention has to be paid in application of SCS method to Korean river basin by adjusting 10-30% increase to the value obtained from soil cover complex. Finally, the design flood hydrograph was consturcted by employing unit hydrograph technique to the dimensionless mass curve. Also a stepwise multiple regression was performed to find the relationship between runoff and API, evapotranspiration rate, 5 days antecedentprecipitation and daily temperature.

The Nakdong River, which lies in a monsoon climate zone with warm rainy summers and cold dry winters, is a typical ecosystem showing the attributes of a regulated river. In 2003, the total annual rainfall (1,805 mm) was higher than the average of the past nine years from 1994 to 2002 (1,250 mm). In September a powerful typhoon, Maemi, caused a big impact on the limnology of the river for over two months. Among the limnological variables, turbidity in 2003 (37.4 ${\pm}$ 94.1 NTU, n = 54) was higher than the annual average for ten years (18.5 ${\pm}$ 2.3 NTU, n = 486) in the lower part of the river (Mulgum: RK 28). Furthermore, physical disturbance (e.g. stream bank erosion within channel) in the upstream of the Imha Dam (RK ca. 350; river distance in kilometer from the estuary barrage) in the upper part of the river was a source of high turbidity, and impacted on the limnological dynamics along a 350 km section of the middle to lower part of the river. After the typhoon, high turbidity persisted more than two months in the late autumn from September to November in 2003. Flow regulation and the extended duration of turbid water are superimposed on the template of existing main channel hydroecology, which may cause spatial changes in the population dynamics of plankton in the river.
For 4 years (2000 ${\sim}$ 2003), annual fluctuations of standing crops of cyanobacteria and physicochemical factors were examined at five sites from Bridge of Seungsoo to Bridge of Seungsan in the lower part of Han River. The cyanobacterial abundance (ND to 4,167 cells $mL^{-1}$) was strongly decreased during the heavy rains in every year. During the similar periods in 2003, cyanobacteria hardly observed, and comprised below of 10 percentage of total phytoplankton. In the period of little cyanobacteria, some green algae and diatom dominated the phytoplankton community, while the concentration of chlorophyll a has not largely change. These results indicate that heavy frequent precipitation strongly limited the growth of cyanobacteria, and lead an algal succession by the appearance of new algal groups.
The aim of this study is to quantify and characterize the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from paddy fields and crop fields in Tottori, Japan. DOC and ultraviolet (UV) absorption were measured in the filtrated water of each sample. The DOC concentration and the SUVA (specific UV absorption) of biodegradation analysis samples were determined around 50 days after their incubation. In the Fukui paddy fields, DOC concentration varied seasonally from 1.1 to $10.1mg\;Cl^{-1}$, becoming higher during heavy runoffs in April, a non-agriculture period. Variations in DOC concentration did not always correspond to rainfall, though. The Obadake paddy fields showed a DOC concentration pattern similar to that of the Fukui paddy fields. The daily DOC discharge per area in the Fukui (up), Fukui (down), Obadake (south) and Obadake (north) paddy fields influent from paddy fields were 0.02, 0.0161, 0.0135 and $0.0027kg\;a^{-1}day^{-1}$, respectively. These differences resulted from differences in agricultural types and customs of farmers according to paddy fields and other kinds of fields. Also, the SUVAs [which are indirect means to evaluate humic substances (hydrophobic fractions)] of the studied influent waters from paddy fields were generally lower than those of the influent waters from crop fields. Nonbiodegradable DOC accounted for 50.2 - 98% and 46.8 - 85.5% of the total DOC in the paddy fields and in the crop fields, respectively.
The research of the determination of event mean concentration (EMC) was focussed combined sewer overflows and highway runoff in korea. But those of non-urban areas are few. In this study, EMC and unit loading on land use types in Nogok watershed were estimated by runoff loading of non-point source (NPS) on non-urban area. Two monitoring sites were equipped with an automatic velocity meter, flow meter, and water sampler. Monitoring was conducted at two monitering site during the rainy season. The results show that the EMC ranges in forest land use are 1.3~2.6 mg/L for BOD, 2.0~16.1 mg/L for SS, 0.1~2.1 mg/L for TN, and 0.12~0.49 mg/L for TP. The unit loading of NPS in this study was difficult to compare directly with that used conventionally because of the difference of field investigation. In near future, it needs to conduct more systematic and long-term research about NPS within the watershed. The results of this research can be used to estimate the total pollution load management system (TPLMS) program in korea.
A distributed watershed model CAMEL (Chemicals, Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses) was applied to a small rural watershed where intensive livestock farming sites are located to estimate nitrate leaching rates from soil to groundwater. The model was calibrated against the stream flows, and T-N and $NO_3-N$ concentrations were observed at the watershed outlet for three rainfall events in 2014. The simulation results showed good agreement with the observed stream flows ($R^2=0.67{\sim}0.93$), T-N concentrations ($R^2=0.40{\sim}0.58$) and $NO_3-N$ concentrations ($R^2=0.43{\sim}0.65$). The estimated annual nitrate leaching rate of the watershed was 33.0 kg N/ha/yr. The contributing proportions of individual activities to the total nitrate leaching rate of the watershed were estimated for livestock farming, applications of chemical fertilizer, and manure. The simulation results showed that the highest contributor to the nitrate leaching rate of the watershed was chemical fertilizer applications. The simulation period was for one year only, however, and results may vary depending on different conditions. Gathering input data over a longer period of time and monitoring data for calibration is needed. When this has been accomplished, it is expected that this model can be applied to small rural watersheds for evaluating temporal and spatial variations of nitrogen transformations and transport processes.

Water quality in Lake Rotorua, New Zealand, deteriorated since the 1960s because of excessive phytoplankton growths due principally to increasing nitrogen and phosphorus in the lake waters. Nutrient concentrations in eight of the nine major streams feeding Lake Rotorua have increased since 1965. The groundwater system has a key role in the hydrology of the Lake Rotorua catchment and the groundwater system is probably the control on the time delay between intensification of agricultural land use and response of surface water quality. All major, and many minor streams, in the catchment are fed by springs. Two lithological units are most important to groundwater flow in the Lake Rotorua catchment: Mamaku Ignimbrite, erupted in about 200,000 years ago and Huka Formation sediments which filled the caldera left by the Mamaku Ignimbrite eruption. Rainfall recharge to groundwater in the groundwater catchment of Lake Rotorua is estimated as approximately 17300 L/s. A calibrated steady-state groundwater flow model estimates that approximately 11100 L/s of this flow discharges into streams and then into the lake and the balance travels directly to Lake Rotorua as groundwater discharge through the lake bed. Land use has impacted on groundwater quality. Median Total Nitrogen (TN) values for shallow groundwater sites are highest for the dairy land use (5.965 mg/L). Median TN values are also relatively high for shallow sites with urban-road and cropping land uses (4.710 and 3.620 mg/L, respectively). Median TN values for all other uses are in the 1.4 to 1.5 mg/L range. Policy development for Lake Rotorua includes defining regional policies on water and land management and setting an action plan for Lake Rotorua restoration. Aims in the action plan include: definition of the current nutrient budget for Lake Rotorua, identification of nutrient reduction targets and identification of actions to achieve targets. Current actions to restore Lake Rotorua water quality include: treatment of Tikitere geothermal nitrogen inputs to Lake Rotorua, upgrade of Rotorua City sewage plant, new sewage reticulation and alum dosing in selected streams to remove phosphorus.
Hydrogeologic environment of the Mega City such as Seoul, suffers from rapid changes caused by urbanization, construction of underground subway or buildings, and contaminant loading by diverse anthropogenic activities. Understanding the present condition of groundwater environment and water budget is necessary to prevent natural and manmade disasters and to prepare for sustainable water resource management of urban environment. In this study, regional groundwater flow and water budget status of Seoul was analyzed using numerical simulation. Modeling result indicated that groundwater level distribution of Seoul generally followed the topography, but the significant decreases in groundwater level were observed around the subway network. Steady-state water balance analysis showed groundwater recharge by rainfall and leakage from the water supply network was about 550,495 m3/day. Surface water inflow and baseflow rate via Han River and major streams accounted for 799,689 m3/day and 1,103,906 m3/day, respectively. Groundwater usage was 60,945 m3/day, and the total groundwater leakage along the subway lines amounted to 114,746 m3/day. Modeling results revealed that the subway could decrease net groundwater baseflow by 40%. Our study result demonstrated that the subway system can have a significant influence on the groundwater environment of Seoul.
A long-term study initiated in 1989 at San-born Field, Columbia, Missouri, was designed to evaluate the affect of environmental factors, nitrogen application, and crop rotation on soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) seed composition. Soybeans were grown as part of a four- year rotation which included corn (Zea maize L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). Results from soil tests made prior to initiation of the study and subsequently every five years, were used to calculate application rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium necessary for target yield of pursuant crops. In the experimental design, nitrogen was applied to one-half of the plot on which the non-leguminous crop, either corn or wheat was grown. Analysis of soybean seed by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy collected over an 11-year period revealed a linear increase in protein and decrease in oil content. Application of nitrogen fertilizer to non-leguminous crops did not have an apparent effect on total protein or oil content of subsequent soybean crop. Analysis of soybean seed proteins by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in conjunction with computerassisted densitometry revealed subtle changes in the accumulation of seed proteins. Immunoblot analysis using antibodies raised against the $\beta-subunit$ of $\beta-conglycinin$ showed a gradual increase in the accumulation of the 7S components during successive years of the experiment. A linear increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall was observed from the onset of data· collection. Higher temperatures during the growing season have been linked to increased protein and diminished oil content of soybean, thus changes observed in this study are possibly related to climatic conditions. However, crop rotation and subsequent changes in soil ecology may contribute to these observed changes in the seed composition.
Because groundwater recharge shows spatial-temporal variability due to climatic conditions, it is necessary to investigate land use and hydrogeological heterogeneity, and estimate the spatial variability in the daily recharge rate based on an integrated surface-groundwater model. The integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model was applied to compute physically based daily groundwater recharge in the Jincheon region. The temporal variations in estimated recharge were calibrated using the observed groundwater head at several National Groundwater Monitoring Stations and at automatic groundwater-monitoring sites constructed during the Basic Groundwater Investigation Project (2009-2010). For the whole Mihocheon watershed, including the Jincheon region, the average groundwater recharge rate is estimated to be 20.8% of the total rainfall amount, which is in good agreement with the analytically estimated recharge rate. The proposed methodology will be a useful tool in the management of groundwater in Korea.
