  • Objectives : We investigated the characteristics of perceived stress response and relationship between some variables of gastrointestinal symptoms(esp., dyspepsia) and subscales of perceived stress response inventory(PSRI) in patients with upper gastointestinal disorder when they perceived stress. Methods : 84 patients with upper gastrointestinal disorder(gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer etc.) and 94 normal controls completed the PSRI developed by Korean psychiatrists. The patient group performed the questionnaire including some variables of gastrointestinal symptoms. Results : Internal consistency was statistically significant in all subscales of PSRI. The patient group was significantly higher at total score of PSRI, general somatic symptom subscale score, specific somatic symptom score than control group. As the result of stepwise regression analysis for relationship between some variables of gastrointestinal symptoms ans subscales of PSRI, specific somatic symptom subsclae closely related with illness duration, past illness history and severity of symptom, and the lowered cognitive function & general negative thinking subscale related with the existence of emotional distress. Conclusion : Patients with upper gastrointestinal disorder showed stronger perceived stress response than control group and they experiences somatic symptoms related to autonomic nervous system and/or gastrointestinal symtoms rather than emotional, cognitive, behavioral symtoms when they perceived stress. They also responded to stress as they expeirenced specific somatic symtom when they had long illness duration, past illness history, and high severity of symptom and the existence of emotional distress could develop lowered congnitive function and general negative thinking.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate relationship between perceived stress level, cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategy and hope in group with high depressive symptom and higher-level perceived stress (H-H) and group with high depressive symptom and lower-level perceived stress (H-L) in patients with depression. Method : A total of 85 patients (over score of 16 by Beck depression Inventory; BDI) were surveyed with Cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire (CERQ), Perceived stress scale (PSS), and The state hope scale (SHS). Mean scores of CERQ and SHS were compared between relatively higher perceived stress and lower perceived stress groups. Correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify the effect of BDI, PSS and CER strategy on SHS in two groups. Results : In ANOVA, the level of hope and maladaptive CERQ score proved to be significantly lower among the H-H group than among the H-L group, while adaptive CERQ scores were not. In Regression analysis, the effective CER strategy in SHS were 'Refocus on planning' in H-H group, while it was 'Acceptance' CER strategy in H-L group. The final regression model explained 36% of the variance of SHS in H-H group and explained 21% of SHS in H-L group. Conclusion : These findings suggest that 'Refocus on planning' and 'Acceptance' cognitive emotion strategy are helpful in promotion of state hope on depression. Especially, 'Refocus on planning' strategy is more effective in high depressive symptom and high-perceived stress level, while 'Acceptance' strategy help to promote hope in high depressive symptom and low-perceived stress level in patients with depression.

  • Background: Depression is a comorbid disabling problem and potentially affects patient likelihood of survival. The aims of this study were to recognize the characteristics of depression and investigate associated predictor factors in patients with oral cancers. Methods: A cross-sectional and correlational design was used to collect data for this study conducted in northern Taiwan. A set of questionnaires was used to measure depression, symptom distress, performance status, social support, and demographic and disease-related information. Logistic regression was conducted to determine important factors predicting depression. Results: A total of 132 oral cancer patients participated in this study. Of these, 18.2% were identified as depression cases. The patient average performance status score was 90 or higher. Patients reported mild-to-moderate levels of symptom distress. The majority of social support was from families. Religious belief, alcohol use, symptom distress, and social support from family were found to be important factors predicting depression. Patients with religious belief with alcohol use reported greater symptom distress, and those with lower levels of social support from families were significantly more likely to develop depression. Conclusions: Clinicians should assess patient emotional status and manage symptoms in a timely manner to enhance coping abilities. Supportive care provides assurance during the acute survivor phase.
