Purpose of this study is to investigate the size-dependent mechanical properties in micron scale medium. Theories such as the couple stress theory and strain gradient theory explain that the deformation in the micron scale is dependent upon the size of the medium. Specimens of the cantilever type, bridge type and paddle type beam that have thickness of 900, 1000 and 1200 nm and width of 10, 20, 30 and $50{\mu}m$ were fabricated by the MEMS technique. We carried out the bending and torsion test to measure the mechanical properties such as the young's modulus, yield strength and torsional rigidity using the AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy).
The evolution of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was studied with torsion test for AISI 304 stainless steel in the temperature range of $900-1000^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range of 0.05-5/sec. The evolution of DRX was investigated with microstructural analysis and change of flow stress curve slope. The investigation of serrated grain boundaries using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis indicated that the nucleated new DRX grain size was similar to the size of bulging part. Before the steady state, the dynamically recrystallizing grains do not remain a constant size and gradually grow to the size of fully DRX grain at steady state. The calculation of grain size was based on $X_{DRX}$ and the assumption, which the nucleated DRX grains are growing to the steady state, continuously. It was found that the calculated results agreed with the microstructure of the alloy.
For loads analysis of airplane, applicable regulation should be determined. Then, loads conditions are prepared from the regulation. Modeling for aerodynamic, mass, and structure are performed. Panel method is usually adopted for aircraft loads analysis to obtain air loads. The ARGON which is a multidisciplinary fixed wing aircraft design software co-developed by the KARI and TsAGI are used for loads analysis. The ARGON can be utilized for flutter and stress analysis as well as for flight and ground loads analysis. In this paper, flight loads analysis for wing structural design of the regional aircraft at the conceptual design phase are performed with the ARGON. FAR 25 is used for the regulation for the load analysis. Shear force, bending moment and torsion diagrams for the wing and shear force and hinge moment for the aileron are presented.
Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is the combined strength of concrete shear strength and steel shear strength in current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam in current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But the tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion in design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded to the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to CEB, two ACI codes(89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.
Recently, Orthotropic steel deck bridges, which have long span decks, have been regarded as one of economical as well as durable bridge types. However, Orthotropic steel deck bridge is used by a lot of welding, which may cause welding defect and deformation of connections. This kind of system happens some damages by the fatigue cracks of welding. The cross-connection of longitudinal rib and transversal rib is one of the weakest point because of the fatigue. The secondary stresses which are from the out-plane deformation of transversal rib and the torsion of longitudinal rib make the topical stress concentration phenomenon. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that a study for the installing of Bulkhead Plate is needed. This study with considering these circumstances proves efficiency of Bulkhead Plate and will be presented optimal design details through finite element analysis according to change the geometrical system of Bulkhead Plate and the cross-connection area of longitudinal and transversal rib
An improved formulation for spatial stability md free vibration of thin-walled curved beams with variable curvature and non-symmetric cross sections are presented based on the displacement field considering the second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. By introducing Vlasov's assumptions, the total potential energy is derived from the principle of linearized virtual work for a continuum. In this formulation, all displacement parameters and the warping function are defined at the centroid axis so that the coupled terms of bending and torsion are added to the elastic strain energy. Also, the potential energy due to initial stress resultants is consistently derived corresponding to the semitangential rotation and moment. The cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions for development of the curved thin-walled beam element having eight degrees of freedom. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, . numerical solutions for free vibration of arches are presented and compared with resells of other researchers and solutions analyzed by the ABAQUS's shell element.
A new iterative scheme is proposed for finite element analysis of wrinkling or tension structures. This enables us to update the stress state and the internal forces correctly taking into account the existence of wrinkling. The finite element implementation of the scheme is straightforward and simple, and only minor modifications of the existing total Lagrangian finite element codes for membranes are needed. The validity of the scheme is demonstrated via numerical examples for the torsion of a membrane and the quasi-static inflation of an automotive airbag, both made of isotropic or anisotropic elastic membranes
The subcritical crack growth of sintered SiC is investigated under various corrosive atmospheres such as distilled water Murakami solution and saturated KOH solution. The KI-V diagrams are obtained by the load relaxation method and incremental displacement rate method using the double torsion technique. The obtained fracture mechanics parameters (n) of sintered SiC are 79 in Murakami solution and 39 in saturated KOH solution. These data indicate that the subcritical crack growth of sintered SiC is taking place in these two conditions and the stress-corrosion cracking is suggested to be the mechanism. With these KI-V diagrams the life of sintered SiC in these conditions is predicted.
The purpose of this study is to calculate the torsional rigidity of arbitrarily shaped composite sections on the basis of hybrid finite element approach. An analogy is used between the torsion problem and deformation of a plate which exhibits only shear behavior. In the analysis a simple hybrid finite element based on Hellinger-Reissner functional is presented and a set of numerical examples are performed to demonstrate and asses the performance of the developed element in practical applications.
The high temperature deformation behaviour of 15vol% SiCp/A16061 composites has been studied in the temperature range of 300-50$0^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of 0.1-3.0/sec by torsion test. On he basis of the flow stress data the strain rate sensitivity(m) of the material is evaluated and used for calculating the deformation efficiency(η) [η=2m/(m+1)] A domain of dynamic recrystallization(DRX) could be identified in these maps by using the deformation efficiency. The characteristicvs of these results has been investigated with the help of determining the region of optimum hot working condition.
