In this study, two sections with different topographic gradients were in the Hyogyo-ri area, the hydraulic gradients were calculated for each section, and the hydraulic gradient fluctuations according to the topographic gradient and rainfall were analyzed. The variations of the hydraulic gradient within the research site was large in the section with steep topographic gradient and small in the section with gradual topographic gradient. The influence of the variation in hydraulic gradient due to rainfall was high in the section with steep topographic gradient, and low in the section with gradual topographic gradient. Through this study, it was found that the hydraulic gradient fluctuations in unconfined aquifer showed as a complex effect of topographic gradient and rainfall.
This research investigated the applicapability of an improved algorithm to calculate the topographic index, ln($\alpha$/tan B), for the topography of Korea employing channel initiation threshold area(CIT) and an exponent for the gradient(H). hanjaechun subwatershed in Cheongdochun and Dongok subwatershed in Wichun test watershed were selected as study areas. The digital elevation models(DEM) of study areas have been made with the resolution from 10m to 100m. Application of CIT to the traditional algorithm provide reasonable computation method in considering channel pixel impact. Introduction of the gradient exponent(H) made it possible to obtain better flow convergence effect in concave topography comparing with the traditional multiple flow direction algorithm. The improved algorithm shows the capability to relax the overestimation problem of rising limb of hydrograph through reducing overestimated high value of topographic index.
A TIN, Triagulated Irregular Network, based topographic modeling method and a distributed rainfall-runoff model using the topographic representation is presented. In the TIN based topographic representation, a watershed basin is modeled as a set of contiguous non-overlapping triagular facets : the watershed basin is subdivided according to streamlines to deal with water movement one-dimensionally ; and each partitioned catchment is approximated to a slope element having a quasi-three-dimensional shape by using cubic spline functions. On an approximated slope element, water movement is represented by combined surface-subsurface kinematic wave equations considering a change of slope gradient and slope width. By using the distributed rainfall-runoff model, the effects of spatial variability of soil properties on runoff response are examined.

Topography influences shallow landslide initiation through both concentration of subsurface flow and the gradient on slope stability. A model for the topographic influence on shallow landslide initiation developed by Mongomerry et al (1994) is applied to 24 places with similar terrain and subsurface flow. The criterion of landslide prone areas developed by Korea Forestry Administration (1998) is likely to misinterpreted under the condition of heavy rainfall. Soil saturation can be predicted by this model. This relative soil saturation can be used to analyze the stability of each topographic point in the case of cohesionless soils with spatially constant thickness and saturated conductivity. The three different stages of steady state rainfall predicting to cause instability in each topographic points provide a good measure of shallow landsliding possibility.

The Ulsan fault with NNW-SSE strike is a very wide and long lineament about 50km along Gyeungju-Ulsan line in the southeastern part of Korea. According to previous studies the Ulsan fault was not considered as a fault but only long lineament since no displacement was found along the lineament. Recently several Quaternary faults were reported in the northeastern part of lineament, which implies the neotectonic movement in this area. We analysed drainage pattern and stream gradient using the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data for both side of Ulsan fault line to check the recent topographic changes which indicate neotectonic movement. The result shows that stream index in the eastern part of Ulsan fault is higher than the one in the western part. This means that recent tectonic movement is more active in the eastern part of Ulsan fault.

Object-based classification methods provide a valid alternative to traditional pixel-based methods. This study reports the results of an object-based classification to examine land cover in the demilitarized zones(DMZs) of Inje-gun. We used land cover classes(7 classes for main category and 13 classes for sub-category) selected from the criteria by Korea Ministry of Environment. The average and standard deviation of the spectrum values, and homogeneity of GLCM were chosen to map land cover types in an hierarchical approach using the nearest neighborhood method. We then identified the distributional characteristics of land cover by considering 3 topographic characteristics (altitude, slope gradient, distance from the Southern Limited Line(SLL)) within the DMZs. The results showed that scale 72, shape 0.2, color 0.8, compactness 0.5 and smoothness 0.5 were the optimum weight values while scale, shape and color were most influenced parameters in image segmentation. The forests (92%) were main land cover type in the DMZs; the grassland(5%), the urban area (2%) and the forests (broadleaf forest: 44%, mixed forest: 42%, coniferous forest: 6%) also occupied mostly in land cover classes for sub-category. The results also showed that facilities and roads had higher density within 2 km from the SLL, while paddy, field and bare land were distributed largely outside 6 km from the SLL. In addition, there was apparent distinction in land cover by topographic characteristics. The forest had higher density at above altitude 600m and above slope gradient $30^{\circ}$ while agriculture, bare land and grass land were distributed mainly at below altitude 600m and below slope gradient $30^{\circ}$.

Recently, Flood hazard has been increased frequently in urban area by rainfall and Typhoon. To manage flood hazard effectively, it needs to construction of flood information management system. Especially, run-off by flood in urban area must be considered not only surface outflow by topographic gradient and elevation but also conduits outflow along conduit network. This paper suggests the flood hazard management system for analyzing flood outflow in urban area using conduits outflow simulation by ILLUDAS model and providing quickly flood hazard information using WebGIS and MobileGIS.

The purpose of this study is to find out the changes in geomorphic characteristics of a small watershed when a golf course is constructed. The research site is a set of seven small watersheds including an 18-hole golf course that were randomly selected. The size, shape, and drainage network of watersheds were measured by using planimeter, watershed eccentricity, and stream order, respectively. In addition, a 25m$\times$25m mesh was used on topographic maps and grading plans in order to obtain the slope, elevation, and aspect of the watersheds. The major results of this research, while investigating of the changes in geomorphic characteristics of watersheds when a golf course is constructed, are as follows: 1. The size of watersheds is increased in accordance to the difference in elevation between the golf course site and the small watershed. 2. The watershed eccentricities are in general similar except for a few low-valued cases. 3. The changes in the average altitude and the gradient are more drastic with their bigger original values. 4. The aspects are changed more with decreasing elevation. 5. The stream order decreases in the case of a low watershed eccentricity. 6. The surface modification has a closer relationship to the slope rather than the size of effective use area. 7. With a steeper gradient and an excessively low gradient, the height of cutting/filling is increased.
The objective of this research was to introduce the TPI approach for interpreting land-forms of mountain forests in South Korea. We develop an objective procedure to decide the scale factor as a basic analytical unit in land-form classification of rugged mountain areas using TPI. In order to determine the scale factor associated with the pattern of slope profiles, the gradient variance curve was derived from a revised hypsometric curve developed using the relief energy of topographic profiles. Using the gradient variance curve, found was the grid size with which the change in relief energy got the peak point. The grid size at the peak point was determined as the scale factor for the study area. In order to investigate the performance of the procedure based on the gradient variance curve, it was applied to determination of the site-specific scale factors of 3 different terrain conditions; highly-rugged, moderately-rugged and relatively less-rugged. The TPI associated with the corresponding scale factors by study site was, then, determined and used in classifying the land-forms. According to the results of this study, the scale factor gets shorter with more rugged terrain conditions. It was also found that the numbers of valleys and ridges estimated with TPI show almost the same trends as those of the observed and the scale factors tends to approach to the mean distance of ridges.
