Topographic information is indispensable in the applications that require elevational data. These applications are exemplified by watershed partition, extraction of drainage networks, viewshed analysis, derivation of geomorphologic features, quantification of landslide-terrain, and identification of topographic settings susceptible to landsliding. Therefore, we study the accuracy of data on topographic parameters derived from digital elevation models(DEMs). This research wished to analyze the effect that data source and grid size get in topography parameter using gridded DEM. An analysis of topography parameter extract and compared drainage basin, watershed slope, stream network using DEM is constructed by digital map and DTED DEM. Especially, when extract stream network from gridded DEM, received much effects according to threshold value of flowaccumulation regardless of DEM grid size. Therefore, this study applied equal threshold value of flowaccumulation for two data sources, and compare and analyzed stream network.
Numerical simulation model using nesting method and considering topographic features was developed to predict atmospheric environments atmospheric flow temperature and diffusion of air pollutants in Kwangyang bay where having complex areas of point sources Korea. In addition developed simulation model was used tracing of spreading range of pollutants when a gas leaks suddenly from Yeo-cheon industrial complex. by comparing the measured and calculated data on atmospheric flow temperature and diffusion of air pollutants the results showed that this model can be well applied and complicated topography affected the diffusion of air pollutants.

In this paper, a technique is described for classifying normal cases and abnormal cases in automatic spinal deformity detection by computer based on moire topographic images of human backs. Displacement is evaluated statistically between the middle line extracted from the entire moire image and the middle line obtained from a small rectangle area defined on the moire image. The middle line is calculated employing a developed potential symmetry analysis technique. The displacement is calculated in several regions and the mean and the standard deviation of the displacement values are chosen as two features. A linear discriminant function (LDF) is defined on the 2-D feature space based on the Mahalanobis distance and the features are classified into two categories, i.e., normal and ...

Consequence analysis using an ALOHA program is conducted to calculate the accidental impact ranges in the cases of hydrogen leakage, explosion, and jet fire in a hydrogen fueled combined cycle power plant. To evaluate the effect of weather conditions and topographic features on the damage range, ALOHA is executed for the power plants located in the inland and coastal regions. The damage range of hydrogen leaked in coastal areas is wider than that of inland areas in all risk factors. The obtained results are expected to be used when designing safety system and establishing safety plans.
Background: Gastric and esophageal cancers are among the most lethal human malignancies worldwide. Of all malignancies estimated in Iran (47,100), gastric and esophageal cancers were responsible for 7,800 and 3,500 deaths in 2008 respectively. The present study aimed to provide an image of patho-epidemiological characteristics with their trends during two past decades with emphasis on topographic, morphologic, and some demographic features. Materials and Methods: In a hospital-based retrospective study in 2009, all pathological reports from esophageal endoscopies and gastric biopsies through a 20 years period (1989-2008) were collected and analyzed in four interval periods(five years each). Also, all eligible samples in hospital archives were enrolled for further testing. Besides, demography, topography and morphology of all samples were determined and analyzed by statistical software. Results: No significant statistical difference was seen in frequency of espohageal and gastric tumors throughout the study. Esophageal cancer cases were older than gastric. Sex ratio was 2.33/1 and men had a higher rate of both esophageal and gastric tumors. Stomach cancer included 64.3% of all cases. Inferior third and end of esophagus were common locations for esophageal tumors whereas proximal stomach was common for gastric tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were common morphological types of tumors in esophagus and stomach respectively. Conclusions: Morphological trends showed an increase of esophageal adenocarcinoma and diffuse/intestinal ratio in stomach cancers. Trends in incidence from gastric cancer decreased based on topographic studies but we could not find a topographical trend toward cadia.

A geographic survey, which requires much of working hours in the digital mapping process, is consisted with the complementary survey and the attribute survey of topography and topographic features, and depended on the field survey. In previous research, using the location-based image had been recommended for diminishing the workload of field survey and post processing. For this research, we have developed the hardware and software for gathering and processing the location-based images with referencing results from the previous research. Those Geographic surveys were performed using developed system on 1/5,000 map sheets for Si and Gun area, respectively. The results have been evaluated as the mobile geographic survey system were able to replace the large part of field survey, and also the working hours were decreased by 37.5% at Si area. However, the complementary survey was needed for the attributes of topography and topographic features that were occluded by the parked vehicles or located in the areas without entry of vehicles.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate sediment yield reduction under various field slope conditions with rice straw mat. The Vegetative Filter Strip Model-W (VFSMOD-W) and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) were used for simulation of sediment yield reduction effect of rice straw mat. The Universe Soil Loss Equation Practice factor (USLE P factor), being able to reflect simulation of rice straw mat in the agricultural field, were estimated for each slope with VFSMOD-W and measured soil erosion values under 5, 10, and 20 % slopes. Then with the regression equation for slopes, USLE P factor was derived and used as input data for each Hydrological Response Unit (HRU) in the SWAT model. The SWAT Spatially Distributed-HRU (SD-HRU) pre-processor module was utilized, moreover, in order to consider spatial location and topographic features (measured topographic features by field survey) of all HRU within each subwatershed in the study watershed. Result of monthly sediment yield without rice straw mat (Jan. 2000 - Aug. 2007) was 814.72 ton/month, and with rice straw mat (Jan. 2000 - Aug. 2007) was 526.75 ton/month, which was reduced as 35.35 % compared without it. Also, during the rainy season (from Jun. to Sep. 2000 - 2007), when without vs. with rice straw mat, monthly sediment indicated 2,109.54 ton and 1,358.61 ton respectively. It showed about 35.60 % was reduced depending on rice straw mat. As shown in this study, if rice straw mat is used as a Best Management Practice (BMP) in the sloping fields, rainfall-driven sediment yield will be reduced effectively.

In this paper, we propose a technique for automatic spinal deformity detection from $moir\acute{e}$ topographic images. Normally the $moir\acute{e}$ stripes show symmetry as a human body is almost symmetric. According to the progress of the deformity of a spine, asymmetry becomes larger. Numerical representation of the degree of asymmetry is therefore useful in evaluating the deformity. First, displacement of local centroids and difference of gray values are evaluated statistically between the left- and the right-hand side regions of the $moir\acute{e}$ images with respect to the extracted middle line. We classify the moire images into two categories i.e., normal and abnormal cases from the features, employing discriminant analysis. An experiment was performed employing 1,200 $moir\acute{e}$ images and 85% of the images were classified correctly.

It is necessary to register precisely Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generated from SPOT -5 stereo images in order to monitor the topographic and environmental changes of important topographic features such as Mt. Baekdu. The SPOT-5 DEM is registered taking SRTM DEM as a reference DEM. If SPOT-5 DEM is transformed with single 3D rigid equation, it has many errors. Therefore, this study extracted uniformly ground control points over study area and estimated locally adapted transformation equation. The accuracy of proposed method was evaluated with comparison to scale-based and GCP-based transformation method.
A habitat model was developed to delineate potential habitat of the leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) in a mountainous region of Kangwon Province, Korea. Between 1997 and 2005, 224 leopard cat presence sites were recorded in the province in the Nationwide Survey on Natural Environments. Fifty percent of the sites were used to develop a habitat model, and the remaining sites were used to test the model. Fourteen environmental variables related to topographic features, water resources, vegetation and human disturbance were quantified for 112 of the leopard cat presence sites and an equal number of randomly selected sites. Statistical analyses (e.g., t-tests, and Pearson correlation analysis) showed that elevation, ridges, plains, % water cover, distance to water source, vegetated area, deciduous forest, coniferous forest, and distance to paved road differed significantly (P < 0.01) between presence and random sites. Stepwise logistic regression was used to develop a habitat model. Landform type (e.g., ridges vs. plains) is the major topographic factor affecting leopard cat presence. The species also appears to prefer deciduous forests and areas far from paved roads. The habitat map derived from the model correctly classified 93.75% of data from an independent sample of leopard cat presence sites, and the map at a regional scale showed that the cat's habitats are highly fragmented. Protection and restoration of connectivity of critical habitats should be implemented to preserve the leopard cat in mountainous regions of Korea.
