Effects of Vibration Fatigue on Compression Strength of Corrugated Fiberboard Containers for Packaging of Fruits during Transport

  • Purpose: The compression strength of corrugated fiberboard containers used to package agricultural products rapidly decreases owing to various environmental factors encountered during the distribution of unitized products. The main factors affecting compression strength are moisture absorption, long-term top load, and fatigue caused by shock and vibration during transport. This study characterized the durability of corrugated fiberboard containers for packaging fruits and vegetables under simulated transportation conditions. Methods: Compression tests were done after corrugated fiberboard containers containing fruit were vibrated by an electro-dynamic vibration test system using the power spectral density of routes typically traveled to transport fruits and vegetables in South Korea. Results: To predict loss of compression strength owing to vibration fatigue, a multiple nonlinear regression equation ($r^2=0.9217$, $RMSE=0.6347$) was developed using three independent variables of initial container compression strength, namely top stacked weight, loading weight, and vibration time. To test the applicability of our model, we compared our experimental results with those obtained during a road test in which peaches were transported in corrugated containers. Conclusions: The comparison revealed a highly significant ($p{\leq}0.05$) relationship between the experimental and road-test results.

  • 한국의 농업분야에는 여러 가지 인증제도가 존재한다. 그 예로 유기농산물 인증, GAP인증, KPGI인증, TOP푸르트/TOP라이스 인증 등이 있다. 이러한 인증제도는 소비자에게 안전하고 고품질의 농산물을 보장하기 위해 시행되었다. 하지만 각 인증제도가 명확한 목적을 보유함에도 불구하고 이러한 인증제도들이 소비자에게 관련정보를 수반하는데 성공적이지 못하다는 평가를 받고 있다. 그 이유로는 현존하는 몇몇의 인증제도가 오히려 소비자들을 혼란스럽게 하고 있다는 것이다. 그리고 각각의 인증제도를 별도로 유지하고 홍보하는 것은 더 많은 비용을 발생시킨다. 이 연구에서는 여러 인증제도를 활용하여 이러한 문제를 해결하고자 하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다.

  • In continuation of studies on the Umbelliferous fruits the inner morphology of 'Kobon' fruit was examined, 'Kobon' is an original plant of Korean Gaoben, its scientific name being given Angelica tenuissima NAKAI or Ligusticum tenuissimum KITAGAWA. The arrangement of vascular bundles is the same as those of the genus Ligusticum or Tilingia and Conioselinum. The tracheids reach nearly the top of the ribs, and this is similar to that of the genus Conioselinum. From these characters and the results of studies on the inner morphology of the fruits of Umbelliferous plants related to 'Kobon,' the origin of 'Kobon' was identified as the genus Conioselinum.

말레이시아 농산물 수출입 동향 (The Export-import Trends of Agricultural Products in Malaysia)

  • To strengthen the competitiveness of agricultural sector of the Korea, the direction of market trends on agriculture of the Malaysia was reviewed. The most dominating agricultural area in value is palm oil products, and forest products, sea products poultry products and rubber products is in order. The cultivated area of highest two top plants, oil palm and rubber, was about 4.4 million hectares in 2005, but it is decreasing year by year. Comparatively, rice field, pine apple and fruits tree cultivating area is increasing in tendency by the year. Among all the agricultural products, those items such as pork meat, poultry, egg were self-sufficient, rice, fruits, vegetables and sea products were about 70 to 80% self-sufficient, and beef meat, goat meat and milk were below 20% self-sufficient. Most of the grains, such as wheat, rice, barley, corn etc. and their processed food were imported. Also, temperate fruits such as apple, pear, and water cultivated as well as sprouting vegetables are imported. Ornamental products as cutting flowers and orchids are exported to mainly to the Singapore, but high quality temperate fruits and vegetables are imported from Australia. Oil palm exportation covers the balance of the other items imported and obtaining the foreign money as well in Malaysia.

특 등급 품질 후지사과 선도유지를 위한 플라스틱 용기 포장 효과 연구 (Applications of Functional Tray Form Packaging to Extend the Freshness of High-Quality 'Fuji' Apples)

  • 특 등급 품질 후지사과의 상온 저장에서의 호흡율 특성을 분석한 결과 전형적인 climacteric형 패턴을 보여 주었으며 저장 유통 중 선도유지를 확보하기 위하여 LDPE 필름을 밀봉한 난좌형태의 포장 구조를 설계하여 저장 온도에 따른 품질 변화 특성을 비교 평가하였다. 본 실험 연구 결과 필름 밀봉 용기 포장 적용이 관행 난좌보다 신선도 유지를 높이는 것으로 확인하였다. 이는 LDPE 필름 덮개로 밀봉한 난좌형태의 용기 포장은 낱개의 난좌컵 형태에 과실을 적용함으로써 포장된 과실의 호흡작용과 증산억제를 유도하여 신선도를 유지하는 MA 조건을 가졌음을 나타낸다. 우수 품질 과실에 대한 차별화된 포장재 용기 적용 연구는 기존 과실 포장재로 닥터의 품질 개선 및 상품성 효과를 가질 것으로 판단된다.

전라도 구곡순담 장수벨트지역에 거주하는 중노년층의 연령군에 따른 여름철 식품 섭취량과 식품 섭취 다양성 및 식이 패턴 평가 (Assessment of Food Consumption, Dietary Diversity and Dietary Pattern during the Summer in Middle Aged Adults and Older Adults Living in Gugoksoondam Logevity Area, Korea)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate food intake, dietary diversity and dietary pattern during the summer in middle aged and older adults living in Gugoksundam (Gurye, Goksung, Sunchang and Damyang counties), Jeonla Province located in southern part of Korea and known as one of the representative Korean longevity areas. Food intake and dietary diversity were assessed by using the data from 2 day-24 hour recall of 1,051 subjects (394 males and 711 females) aged 45 years and older (45-93 years in male, 45-105 years in female). The average ages of males and females were 70.7 years and 71.1 years, respectively. Average total daily food intake was significantly decreased with aging in both genders, and the average animal food intake ratio to total food intake was ranged 10~14% in 3 different age groups, 45~64 years, 65~74 years and 75 years and older. The contribution of each food group, in weight, to total food intake showed the descending order of grains, fruits, vegetables and alcohols in males, and grains, fruits, potatoes and meats in females. On daily intake amount of each food item, rice, watermelon, soju, kimchi, and potato were ranked on top 5 in descending order in males, and rice, watermelon, potato, kimchi and ylmukimchi in females. On intake frequency, rice, kimchi, onion, green pepper and potato were ranked on top 5 in descending order in both genders. Dietary variety score (DVS) and dietary diversity score (DDS) for the assessment of dietary diversity and balance were significantly decreased with aging in both genders. In food group intake pattern (DMGFV), 01101 type without consumption of dairy and fruits was the most prevalent, and only 3.6% of male and 3.9% of female subjects showed 11111 type, consumed all the 5 food groups a day. Dietary pattern of subjects was analyzed by cluster analysis with 18 food groups intake. Overall dietary pattern was classified into two clusters, one was more desirable and the other was less desirable. The percentage of subjects with more desirable dietary pattern was about 15% in male and 32% in female. In conclusion, most of our subjects living in Gugoksundam area were taking very simple diet with low amount of dairy products and fruits. These results indicate that nutrition intervention and education for older people living in rural areas should be focused on various food intake including dairy products and fruits.

한국인 식이섬유 섭취 상태의 연차적 추이 $(1991{\sim}2001)$ (Annual Changes in the Estimated Dietary Fiber Intake of Korean during $1991{\sim}2001$)

  • The present study determined the estimated dietary fiber (DF) intake per capita of Korean from 1991 to 2001 and analyzed the major food sources of dietary fiber for Korean using the data on per capita consumption of each food reported in the Korean National (Health and) Nutrition Survey Reports and the recently established DF database by the Korean Nutrition Society. The estimated mean daily DF intakes of Korean during the last 11 years $(1991{\sim}2001)$ were in the range of $19.25{\sim}21.22\;g\;or\;9.97{\sim}11.99\;g/1,000\;kcal$ with a small range of fluctuations. As of 2001, average DF intake per capita of Korean was estimated as 20.92 g or 10.59 g/1,000 kcal. The average DF intake level was under the Adequate Intake for DF (12 g per 1,000 kcal) of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for Koreans established in 2005. The level of DF intake was relatively lower in small city residents compared to the large city or rural area. The top two major food group sources of DF for Korean were vegetables and cereals, in addition, legumes, fruits, seaweeds and seasonings were included among top five food groups. The ratio of DF intake from fruits was gradually increased but the ratio from legumes was steadily decreased during the last 11 years. The mostly contributed single foods for DF intakes of Korean were Kimchi and rice regardless of year and area. Percentage of DF intake from top ten single foods was continuously decreased from 65% in 1991 to 51 % in 2001. The results of this study revealed that DF intakes of Korean as of 2001 is insufficient compared to the Adequate Intake for DF for Korean and the source of fiber in Korean diet has been more various. Therefore the beneficial health effects of DF and the increased consumption of DF from a variety of food sources should be continuously emphasized through the nutritional education.

고접갱신이 복숭아 Y자 수형 조기 구성 및 생산성에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Renewal Topworking on Early Y Shape Tree Formation and Yields in Peach Trees)

  • 복숭아 Y자 수형에서 기존 나무를 갱신할 때 고접갱신을 통해 조기에 수형을 완성하고 생산성을 유지할 수 있는 방법을 알아보고자 수행한 연구결과는 아래와 같다. 접목위치별 활착률은 원가지 내측에 접목하는 것이 80%로 외측의 73.3%에 비해 다소 양호하였고, 접목활착 후 발아된 신초의 기부직경은 내측이 36.2mm로 외측의 19.6mm에 비해 훨씬 굵게 자랐으며, 신초길이 역시 내측에 접목한 것이 220.3cm로 외측의 166cm에 비해 신초발육이 양호하였다. 고접갱신지는 개식수에 비해 수폭, 기부직경 및 결과지수 등에서 수체생장정도가 적은 것으로 나타났는데 수폭은 개식묘의 436.3cm에 비해 394.7cm에 불과하였고, 수고는 고접위치를 감안하면 고접갱신지가 1m 정도 낮았다. 수형구성을 위한 노력시간은 고접갱신지는 49.9시간/10a이었고, 개식묘는 51.5/10a로 두 처리 간 큰 차이를 보이지 않았지만, 고접갱신수의 경우 중간대목 품종의 관리시간 25.7시간/10a를 더하면 노력시간이 더 소요되는 것으로 나타났다. 수형구성을 위한 노력요소 중 적심>유인>도장지 제거 순으로 많았다. 3년간 누적수량은 처리 당년은 고접갱신수와 개식수 모두 생산량이 없었고 2년차는 고접갱신수의 생산량이 908kg/10a로 개식수 395kg/10a보다 훨씬 많았으나, 3년차에는 개식수의 수량이 고접수를 능가하였다. 그러나 고접수의 경우 중간대목 품종의 생산량을 합치면 개식수에서처럼 생산량의 공백 없이 매년 2,000kg 전후의 생산량을 유지할 수 있었다. 고접갱신 후 수량에 대한 손실보전을 위해 중간대목 품종을 3년에 걸쳐 연차적으로 갱신할 경우 과실수확을 위한 노동력, 과실봉지비, 농약비 및 수확, 선별 비용이 상대적으로 증가 되었지만, 수량증가와 더불어 개식에 따른 묘목비, 장비임대, 굴취비 및 지주시설 보수비용 등이 절감되어 매년 약 299만원/10a 정도의 소득적 이익이 발생하는 것으로 나타났다.

Effects of Single-Row Transplantation on Improving Strawberry Growth and Marketable Yield

  • This study shows how the growth of the top part of plants cultivated using the single-row strawberry method, with 12 cm plant spacing, as well as that of plants cultivated through conventional planting, is characterized by the presence of many leaves in the first flower cluster harvest. The leaf area and crown diameter were the largest in the 12 cm spacing method. The hight top fresh weight (59.2 g) was detected wen the 12 cm spacing method was used followed by conventional planting and, 9 cm and 6 cm spacing method. The K and Ca contents in the first flower cluster were the highest when the 12 cm spacing method (2.0% and 2.1%, respectively) and conventional planting, (0.42% and 0.86%, respectively) were used, and these values were significantly higher than the K and Ca contents obtained using the other two methods. The N, P, Mg, Fe, and B contents show no significant differences across the planting methods. The sugar content of the first flower cluster fruits was the highest when the 12 cm spacing method was used, while the sugar content of the fourth flower cluster fruits was highest after conventional planting. Firmness was the highest in the first, third, and fourth flower clusters after conventional planting, while no significant differences were observed for the 6 cm, 9 cm, and 12 cm spacing methods. A yield of 25 g or above during November to December was observed to be the highest when the 12 cm spacing method was used, while a yield of 10-16 g was the highest when both the 9 cm and 12 cm spacing methods werw used. The yield of products in January-April was the highest when the 12 cm spacing and conventional planting methods were used, and total product yield was also the highest for these methods. A significant portion of non-marketable products (39 g) was obtained when the conventional planting method was used.

모의 수송환경에서의 적재된 골판지 포장화물 내 배의 진동특성 (Vibration Characteristics of the Pears in Corrugated Fiberboard Container for Packaging be stacked at Simulated Transportation Environment)

  • Fruits are subjected to complex dynamic stresses in the transportation environment. During a long journey form the production area to markets, there is always some degree of vibration present. Vibration inputs are transmitted from the vehicle through the packaging to the fruit. Inside, these cause sustained bouncing of fruits against each other and container wall. These steady state vibration input may cause serious fruit injury, and this damage is particularly severe whenever the fruit inside the package is free to bounce, and is vibrated at its resonance frequency. The determination of the resonant frequencies of the fruit may help the packaging designer to determine the proper packaging system providing adequate protection for the fruit, and to understand the complex interaction between the components of fruit when they relate to expected transportation vibration inputs. The first frequency of the pear in packaged freight be stacked in resonance frequency band of the pear packaged freight was increased from the bottom to the top of the stack but the second frequency of that in resonance frequency band of the pear was decreased. This indicated that the high damage score of the pear in bottom tier in vibration test was due to higher acceleration level in resonance frequency band of the pear.
