  • The quality and functionality of machined products is determined by surface finish. The surface roughness is characterized by roughness parameters such as R $_{a}$ and R $_{max}$. While such parameters are useful to define the quality of surface, they are nor sufficiently descriptive characteristics of surface. The fractal dimension which can describe characteristics od surface roughness than conventional roughness parameters has been applied. In this work, Relation between fractal dimension and surface roughness will be examined as a means of characterizing surface roughness.s.s.

  • Surface of rapid prototype has inevitably stair-stepping error, which is attributed to the continuous building process of 2 dimensional area. In this study, rounded edge model was established to estimate the roughness of inclined surface which has stair-stepping error. To investigate the roughness of rapid prototypes, specimens that have various surface inclinations were manufactured by various types of RP machines. As the surface inclination increased, the roughness of the specimens manufactured by SL, FDM, or LOM process decreased, which coincides with the simulation results. However, surface roughness of 3DP specimen was almost independent of the inclination. Furthermore, as the angle of surface increased, roughness of poly-jet specimen also increased, which is attributed to the frictional behavior between writing head and scanned area.

  • This paper is concerned with the surface roughness and the bending strength of ground workpiece in ZrO2 ceramic grinding. Surface roughness was measured with surface tracer and bending strength value was obtained by three-point bending test on machining center using tool dynamometer. Grinding experiments were carried out to examine the effects of grinding conditions including diamond mesh size, table speed, and depth of cut on ground surface roughness. The correlation between surface roughness and bending strength was also inspected. The experimental results indicate that the rougher surface is produced as the mesh size of diamond wheel is reduced and table speed is increased, but surface roughness is not affected by depth of cut. The values of bending strength decrease as the values of Ra, Rmax and Ku increase.

  • Machining process introduces thermal deformation of a cutter, which affects the surface finish of the workpieces. By measuring the temperature distribution of the cutter, thermal stress and deformation of the cutter are simulated. In addition, surface roughness of workpiece is simulated by the surface-shaping system. The result shows that thermal deformation deteriorates the surface roughness.

  • When the presintered ceramics are machined with ceramic tool, the tool life becomes extremely short. The CBN tool exhibits the best performance in dry machining of the ceramics presintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ among all cutting tests. The roughness of the machined surface of the ceramics presintered below $1350^{\circ}C$ is smaller than that of the ceramics presintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ While the performance of the cemented carbide and CBN tools is better in dry than in wet machining, the diamond tool shows adverse tendency. The tool life is not affected by the feed rate and depth of cut. During the following full-sintering after the machining of the presintered ceramics, the surface roughness decreases up to 62%. The finished surface in machining the presintered ceramics is much better than that in machining the full-sintered ceramic.

  • This paper has been considered on the cutting characteristics such as chip formation and surface roughness for Inconel 690 alloy with difficult-to-cut because of high toughness and strength. We have made efforts solving the problem to difficult-to-cut of Inconel by improvement of tool with TiN coating and the selection of optimum cutting condition. We used the CCD camera and the surface roughness tester to observe the chip formation and the state of machined surface by using the improved tool with diamond coating and various cutting condions. We have found that the chip formation showed the tooth shape of tooth blade and the surface roughness was very poor. but it can be better by selection of optimum cutting condition.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to analyze the effect of cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed and depth of cut) and tool nose radius on the surface roughness and the cutting force components during hard turning of the AISI 52100 (50 HRC) steel with a ceramic cutting tool. The tests have been conducted according to the methodology of planning experiments, based on an orthogonal plan of Taguchi (L27). By using the response surface methodology (RSM), the components of the cutting force and the roughness of the machined surface were modeled and the effects of the input parameters were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and RSM. The results show that the feed (f), the tool nose radius (r), the cutting speed (Vc), the interaction between feed and tool nose radius ($f{\times}r$) as well as that of the quadratic effect ($f^2$) all have significant effects on the surface roughness (Ra). The feed is the most influencing factor with a contribution of 47.31%. The components of the cutting force were strongly influenced by the depth of cut, followed by the advance with a lower degree. By comparing the experimental values with those predicted by the models of the cutting force components and the surface roughness, it appears that they are in very good correlation.

  • The creation process of a typical machined surface is treated here as a dynamic system. An investigation is carried out to establish a relationship between the characteristics of cutting force fluctuations that cause vibration response of the tool-workpiece system and the formation of surface in face cutting by sintered carbide cutting tool. Cutting force is measured and analyzed in frequency domain. The power spectral densities of cutting force give a useful information in surface generation and it can be used to find out the control factor of surface roughness. The terms, PSD ratio & Normalized spindle frequency PSD, are defined and when the value of power in spindle frequency is absolutely little but relatively large, it is obtained high accuracy surface roughness. The aim of this research is to find surface profile by measured and analyzed cutting force signals. The simulation of surface generation gives the comprechension of its mechanism and help to predict and control the surface quality. In this study, it is suggested what informations about surface generation can be acquired from the cuttuing force signal and an way of generating a better surface.

  • Rib cutting is being used to many electronic components and small plastic products. In this study, comparison experiment on tool of flat type(2F) and single edge type(1F) was conducted. Results were as follows: Surface roughness and tool wear of straight cutting showed good results in tool with a straight structure of the Existing tool. Rib cutting of 7mm depth was shown 50% higher surface roughness of development tool than the existing tool. The cutting time varies depending on the shape of the rib. But it is three times faster compared to existing tool.

But, there were no significant difference between MCD and PCD tool above a certain feed in surface roughness
