  • The effect of organic solvent mixture ratio on the rheology property of slurry and thickness control of ceramic green sheet was investigated. For selecting a suitable dispersant multiple light scattering method was used to evaluate the particle migration velocity and variation of clarification layer thickness. Using the selected dispersant the dispersion property of solution according to solvent mixture ratio was investigated. Binder and plasticizers were added to formulate slurries and their viscosity was evaluated according to solvent mixture ratio. Ceramic green sheets with average thickness of 30, 50 urn were fabricated via tape casting and their thickness tolerances measured. As a result according to solvent mixture ratio the solution and slurry properties varied and for the mixture ratio of ethanol/toluene of 80/20 the ceramic green sheet with the lowest thickness tolerance was obtained.

  • This paper proposes a fault detection and recovery mechanism for a fault-tolerant Mini-MAP system, and provides detailed techniques for its implementation. This paper considers the fault-tolerant Mini-MAP system which has dual layer structure from the LLC sublayer down to the physical layer to cope with the faults of those layers. For a good fault detection, a redundant and hierarchical fault supervision architecture is proposed and its implementation technique for a stable detection operation is provided. Information for the fault location is provided from data reported with a fault detection and obtained by an additional network diagnosis. The faults are recovered by the stand-by sparing method applied for a dual network composed of two equivalent networks. A network switch mechanism is proposed to achieve a reliable and stable network function. A fault-tolerant Mini-MAP system is implemented by applying the proposed fault detection and recovery mechanism.

  • International conferences to block the spread of Avian bird flu occurred in Beijing, 2006 and others warned of the seriousness of the H5N1 strain. The meetings succeeded in generating billions of dollars from USA, EU and World Bank. Migratory birds seem to play a major role in the spread of the aggressive strain globally from Asia to Europe and Africa. Experiences of tolerance breeding of maize (Zea mays L.) for four decades against 20 biotic stresses suggest that the prime cause of the occurrence of H5N1 strain was due to the human beings' counter-efforts against nature. Excessive use of chemicals (spray and injection) in the commercial poultry farms had created high selection pressure on virus. The new strain had mutated for survival. Attempting to eliminate the virus by chemicals for 100% control is a dangerous way to control biotic stresses. This can create more aggressive strains. A solution would be to build up tolerability of the commercial animals against the virus. Improvement of poultry cage environments and respect for nature must be integrated. Potential foes must be watched.

  • Prefabricated bridges require strict management of tolerance during fabrication and assembly. In this paper, digital engineering models for prefabricated bridge components such as deck, girder, pier, abutment are suggested to support information delivery through the life-cycle of the bridge. Rule-based modeling is used to define geometry of the members considering variable dimensions due to fabrication and assembly error. DfMA(design for manufacturing and assembly) provides the rules for ease of fabrication and assembly. The digital engineering model consists of geometry, constraints and corresponding parameters for each phase. Alignment and control points are defined to manage tolerances of the prefabricated bridge during fabrication and assembly. Quality control by digital measurement of dimensions was also considered in the model definition. A pilot bridge was defined virtually to validate the suggested digital engineering models. The digital engineering models for DfMA showed excellent potential to realize prefabricated bridges.

  • Fault tolerant control algorithm for heteropolar magnetic bearings are presented. This fault tolerant control utilizes grouping of currents as C-cores in order to isolate magnetic fluxes. Hardware requirements to maintain fault tolerant control are reduced since decoupling chokes are not required in this control scheme. The currents supplied to each pole are redistributed, if some coils fail suddenly, such that the resultant magnetic forces should remain invariant through coil failure events. Load capacity before magnetic saturation is reduced through coil failures while maintaining the same magnetic forces before and after failure.

  • We developed fault diagnosis fuzzy expert system for ACS(Advanced Control System). ACS is a DCS(Distributed Control System) with advanced control algorithm fault tolerance capabilities, fault diagnosis functions, and so on. Fuzzy expert system developed for an ACS in this paper gives an operator alarm signal depending on the state of process value and manipulated value, and the cause of alarm in real time. • Neural network control has many innovative potentials for intelligent adaptive control. Among many, it promises real time adaption, robustness, fault tolerance, and self-learning which can be achieved with little or no system models. In this paper, a dynamic robot controller has been developed based on a backpropagation neural network. It gradually learns the robot's dynamic properties through repetitive movements being initially trained with a PD controller. Its control performance has been tested on a simulated PUMA 560 demonstrating fast learning and convergence.

  • A neural controller for process control was proposed that combines a simple feedback controller with a neural network. This control was applied to distillation control. The feedback error learning technique was used for on-line learning. Important characteristics on neural controller were analyzed. The proposed neural controller can cope well with strong interactions, significant time delays, sudden changes in process dynamics without any prior knowledge of the process. It was shown that the neural controller has good features such as fault tolerance, interpolation effect and random learning capability

  • This paper addresses the problem of fault detection and tolerance for asynchronous sequential machines using state feedback control. The considered asynchronous machine is affected by intermittent faults. When intermittent faults occur, the machine undergoes unauthorized state transitions and, for a finite duration, remains at the fault state, not responding to the change of the external input. In this paper, we postulate the scheme of detecting intermittent faults and present the existence condition and design algorithm for a robust state feedback controller that overcomes the adversarial effect of intermittent faults. We also undertake a comparative study between the previous control scheme for transient faults and the present strategy for intermittent faults. The design procedure for the proposed controller is described in a case study.
