  • Many vehicles have significantly under-inflated tires, primarily because drivers infrequently check their vehicles' tire pressure. When a tire is used while significantly under-inflated, its sidewalls flex more and the tire temperature increases, increasing stress and the risk of failure. In this study we evaluated tire safety and economical efficiency at various inflation pressure. For tire safety we performed FMVSS indoor durability test, measurement of rolling tire temperature, braking performance at dry/wet road condition, and rolling resistance test for economical efficiency. Results show that low pressure decreases tire durability of both speed-increase condition and load-increase condition. Heat temperature of rolling tire increases as pressure decreases and significantly under-inflated tires cause increase of vehicle's stopping distance at wet road condition. Also Under-inflation increases the rolling resistance of a tire and, correspondingly, decreases vehicle's fuel economy.

  • Maintaining proper tire air pressure is an essential element in ensuring vehicle safety. UHP Tires that boast of many safety features are increasing in the market. In particular, the development of "Self-Inflating Tire" technology is accelerating around the globe. Self-inflating tire refers to a technique for maintaining appropriate tire pressure. An internal regulator senses when tire inflation pressure has dropped below the set air pressure. The tire boosts air through the valve when rolling and compressed air enters into the tire. This procedure keeps the tire air pressure at an appropriate level and increases tire safety. Flow analysis of the internal tube is required to examine self-inflating tires. In this study, a method of tube flow analysis using the FSI Method is proposed. The valve system is also implemented to optimize the regulator and sensor.

  • Tire wear and defect are important factors for safe driving condition. These defects are generally inspected by some specialized experts or very expensive equipments such as stereo depth camera and depth gauge. In this paper, we propose tire safety vision inspector based on deep neural network (DNN). The status of tire wear is categorized into three: 'safety', 'warning', and 'danger' based on depth of tire tread. We propose an attention mechanism for emphasizing the feature of tread area. The attention-based feature is concatenated to output feature maps of the last convolution layer of ResNet-101 to extract more robust feature. Through experiments, the proposed tire wear classification model improves 1.8% of accuracy compared to the existing ResNet-101 model. For detecting the tire defections, the developed tire defect detection model shows up-to 91% of accuracy using the Mask R-CNN model. From these results, we can see that the suggested models are useful for checking on the safety condition of working tire in real environment.

  • In a Vehicle, Safety is the most important factor for drivers. It is well known that tire pressure lower than normal reduces the safety of the vehicle. In a consideration of active safety, tire pressure monitoring system is absolutely required. Tire pressure monitoring using in-tire pressure sensors with an RE data link have proven to be best approach to measuring tire pressure over the widest range of operating conditions. In this paper, we describe the parameters of TPMS, the characteristic of tire pressure and temperature compensation. These are the main factors to design the decision logic. We will show the guidelines for TPMS logic development considering environment variables and vehicle conditions.

  • This paper presents the case studies on the friction related wears of an automotive tire, which is strongly connected to the safety and comfort of a driver during a running of a car. Wear scars of a tire tread are affected by various causes such as an air pressure, a wheel alignment, a driving speed, road conditions, starting and braking habits of a driver. The data were collected from used tires for a replacement at the car service center. Most of the wear problems came from the improper repair and adjustment of revolving components, which cause an unbalanced wear of a tread part of a tire. Thus, the regular checking of a tire radically reduces the wear scars of a tire and may increase a driving safety and a fuel economy of a car and a wear life of a tire.

  • As motorcycles are getting more widely used recently, motorcycle accidents are gradually increased every year. Although most accidents are caused by human factors, the importance of motor vehicle safety standards cannot be underestimated indeed. A variety of regulations related to motorcycle safety have been issued in many countries such as EU, U.S., and Australia, etc. In order to harmonize the international safety standards, it is necessary to develop or enhance the Korean Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (KMVSS) for motorcycles. In this study, motorcycle safety standards for an exterior rear-view mirror and a tire are investigated. Actual test procedures are expected in sequential studies according to the results provided herein. Also, the findings in this paper can be utilized to ensure the KMVSS for a safer driving.

  • In domestic replacement tire market, imported tires are increasing condinuously. Because there is no institute officially investigating tire safety and performance, domestic drivers can be exposed to defective tires with no regulations. In this study we performed investigation of replacement tire market status and amount of imported tires. Over $90\%$ of imported tires are for passenger car and the number of total imported tires is increasing in recent years. Low price tires imported from Southeast Asia and China are selected to evaluate quality level. Basic inspection, indoor test, outdoor test, material test are conducted to evaluate the selected tires and compared with tires of domestic maker. From test results quality level of the selected tires could be found.

  • This paper presents a comparative study between the parameter-optimized Pacejka model and artificial neural network model for the tire force estimation. The two different approaches are investigated and compared in this study. First, offline optimization is conducted based on Pacejka Magic Formula model to determine the proper parameter set for the minimization of tire force error between the model and test data set. Second, deep neural network model is used to fit the model to the tire test data set. The actual tire forces are measured using MTS Flat-Track test platform and the measurements are used as the reference tire data set. The focus of this study is on the applicability of machine learning technique to tire force estimation. It is shown via the regression results that the deep neural network model is more effective in describing the tire force than the parameter-optimized Pacejka model.

  • Ride comfort is one of the major factors in evaluating the performance of the vehicle. Tire is closely related to the ride comfort of the vehicle as the only parts in contact with the road surface directly. Vertical stiffness which is one of the parameters to evaluate the tire performance is great influence on the ride comfort. In general, the lower the vertical stiffness, the ride comfort is improved. Research for improving the ride comfort has been mainly carried out by optimizing the shape of the pneumatic tire. However, demand for safety of the vehicle has been increased recently such as a run-flat tire which is effective in safety improvement. But a run-flat tire have trouble in practical use because of poor ride comfort than general tire. Therefore, In this paper, the research was carried out for improving the ride comfort through the optimization of the SIR shape inside a run-flat tire. Meta-model was generated by using the design of experiment and it was able to reduce the time for the finite element analysis of optimization. In addition, Shape optimization for improving the ride comfort was performed by using the genetic algorithm which is one of the global optimization techniques.

  • The demands for vehicle safety systems such as ABS and ESC have been increased. Accurate vehicle state estimation is required to realized the abovementioned systems and tire-friction coefficient is crucial information. Estimation of lateral tire-road friction coefficient using pneumatic trail information is mainly dealt in this paper. Pneumatic trail shows unique characteristics according to the wheel side slip angle and these property is highly sensitive to vehicle lateral motion. The proposed algorithm minimizes the use of conventional tire models such as magic formula, brushed tire model and Dugoff tire model. The pure side slip maneuver, which means no longitudinal dynamics, is assumed to achieve the ultimate goal of this paper. A simulation verification using Carsim and Simulink is performed and the results show the feasibility of the proposed algorithms.
