  • In this paper, a novel approach to estimate cohesive laws for the mode I fracture of the graphene is presented by combining molecular dynamic simulations and an inverse algorithm based on field projection method and finite element method. The determination of crack-tip cohesive laws of the graphene based on continuum mechanics is a non-trivial inverse problem of finding unknown tractions and separations from atomic simulations. The displacements of molecular dynamic simulations in a region far away from the crack tip are transferred to finite element nodes by using moving least square approximation. Inverse analyses for extracting unknown cohesive tractions and separation behind the crack tip can be carried out by using conservation nature of the interaction J- and M-integrals with numerical auxiliary fields which are generated by systematically imposing uniform surface tractions element-by-element along the crack surfaces in finite element models. The preset method can be a very successful approach to extract crack-tip cohesive laws from molecular dynamic simulations as a scale bridging method.

  • Tipping takes significant part in hospitality industry, especially in hotels and restaurants. According to the recent studies, over US$26.4B were given to the service personnel in the restaurant industry from the customers as tips in 2003 in the US alone. As a result of these developments, tipping has been a legitimate area of academic inquiry in many foreign countries but here in Korea this custom has not drawn much attention due to service charge being placed by the government since 1979. The purpose of this study is to analyse the perception and attitude of tip recipients and compare it with the results of previous studies carried out by Shamir and Parrett. Statistical analyses were carried out to compare the differences of perception between tip recipients and non recipients on the staff role conflict, job satisfaction, pay satisfaction and attitude toward the guests. It is suggested from the finding that the current service charge system needs to be taken into consideration for possible revision or alteration as the management environment and customer needs in the hospitality industry in Korea are changing at an enormous pace. As this study focused on the perception of employees, further study on the perception of customers to tipping is highly recommended.

  • To verify the existing theory, non-propagating crack(NPC) does not exist in Ti which fulfills the good conditions for being of NPC, NPC detection in Ti was tried out. Also, the conception of fatigue limit in Ti and a main cause for NPC being were inquired. NPC was detected in both sharp notch root ( $\rho$=0.02mm) and micro pit (diameter = 0.25mm) which held fast to the end under stressing of fatigue limit. Therefore, the existing theory was identified as mistake. But, NPC can not be detected in smooth specimen. This fact would be due to the presumption that NPC is very small or crack does not initiate in smooth specimen. Anyway, the fatigue limit of Ti does not correspond to critical stress of crack initiation but correspond to critical stress of NPC growth. Measurement on the COD of NPC in Ti showed that the crack tip was closed even under the peak stress level at fatigue limit. But, after stress relieving annealing crack tip was opened. Consequently, compressive residual stress which is induced around the crack tip is considered to be the factor causing the NPC being.

  • In order to investigate the effect of inorganic dielectric fine particle mixed in Low Density Polyethylene on the deterioration by treeing, a comparative study for initiation and development of the tree has been carried out between the pure thin film specimen and the same geometrical specimen mixed with a constant weight percent by a defiend particle size of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ and SiO$_{2}$, having larger dielectric constants than that of the base material. According to the results, it has been observed that as increasing dielectric constant, the initiation of tree is expedited, however, the development of the tree reached at the surface of filler particles shows the suppressive trends. From these facts, a reasonable interpretation may be possible by considering the effect of intensified electrical field around the tip in the presence of filler particles, that the initiation and the development of tree are a mechanical break down process caused by Maxwell stress due to the concentration of electrical field at the tip. This suppressive effect is specifically suggestive for the reason that a discharge route must be constructed around the particle surface because of the intensified field strength near filler, which, in turn, reduces the geometrical curvature of the tip so that the local intensity of electrical field can be relaxed. Further more an experimental evidence for this assumption was able to observe in this investigation.

  • The stirred tank reactor is one of the most commonly used devices in industry for achieving mixing and reaction. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius. Stereoscopic PIV measurements (Hill et $al.^{(1)}$) along with the theoretical model of the impeller-induced flow (Yoon et $al.^{(2)}$) were used in defining the impeller-induced flow as superposition of circumferential, jet and tip vortex pair components. Large eddy simulation of flow in a stirred tank was carried out for the three different Reynolds numbers of 4000, 16000 and 64000. The effect of different Reynolds numbers is well observed in both instantaneous and time averaged flow fields. The instantaneous and mean vortex structures are identified by plotting an isosurfaces of swirling strength for all Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds number dependency of the nondimeansional eddy viscosity, resolve scale and subgrid scale dissipations is clearly shown in this study.

  • The detection of thin-layered soil is important in soft soils to evaluate the soil behavior. The smaller diameter cone penetrometer have been commonly used to detect the layer with increasing sensitivity. The objective of this study is to detect the thin-layered soil using cone resistance and electrical resistance. The cone resistivity penetration test (CRPT) is developed to evaluate the cone tip resistance and electrical resistance at the tip. The CRPT is a micro-cone which has a $0.78cm^2$ in projected area. The application test is conducted in a laboratory large-scale consolidometer (calibration chamber). The kaolinite, sand and water are mixed to make the specimen at the liquid limit of 46% using a slurry mixer. It takes two months for the consolidation of the specimen. After consolidation, the CRPT test is carried out. Furthermore the standard CPT results are compared with the electrical resistance measured at the tip in the field. This study suggests that the CRPT may be a useful tool for detecting thin-layers in soft soils.

  • The marine medium-speed diesel engines are operated by two methods; one is the electric motors, and the other air starting motors. Even though air starting motor is dependent of the engine types and sizes, it has been widely used in this area due to its simplicity, convenience and reliability. However most of them are currently imported from overseas due to the lack of the cutting-edge technology in terms of design and manufacturing. Therefore, from the point of this view, the air starting motor needs to be produced by our own techniques. The purpose of this paper is to give the designing parameters in order to make a proper "Air Starting Motor" using CFD. The aerodynamic approaches were given to understand the internal flow characteristics of the air starting motor. In addition, we have carried out the effects of tip clearance. In the calculations the tip clearance of air starting motor has been varied between 0% and 5.7% of blade span.

  • The high pressure turbopump carries out supplying the oxidizer in the liquid propulsion rocket in the combustion chamber. Because an LRE requires a very short starting time , the turbine at the turbopump experiences high torque that was produced by the high pressure and the high temperature. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a turbine blade surface temperature profiles at initial starting 0 ${\sim}$ 0.5 sec. Using $Fine^{Tm}$/turbo, three dimensional Baldwin-Lomax turbulence models are used for numerically analysis. The turbine is composed of 108 blades total, but only 7 rotors were considered because of periodic symmetry effect. Because of interaction with a bow shock on the suction surface, the boundary layer separates from suction surface at inner area of turbine blade. The averaged temperature of the turbine blade tip at 1000 rpm is higher than that of 9000 rpm. Especially at 1000 ${\sim}$ 9000 rpm, temperatures increases on the hub side of the turbine blade tip. Moreover at 9000 rpm, the temperatures from the hub to the shroud of the blade tip increase as well.

  • The single edged blade was efficient to reduce tilling torque requirement than the double edged blade as previous reported study. This study was carried out to find reducing effects of tilling torque requirement of single edged blade comparing to double edged one in according to wearing by tilling operation. The single and double edged rotary blades were attached on same rotary shaft, and tilling operation was done in hard glass land. The wearing weights of the blade were checked out each 3 hrs tilling operation, at same time, the tilling toruqe requirements were measured with soil bin system in laboratory. The results of the study were summarized as follows: 1. The edged blade shape was not changed during the tilling operation of the rotary blade. The single edged blade was saved 5-10% in the maximum tilling torque and 3-15% in the mean tilling torque than the double edged blade for total durable period. 2. Generally, the tilling torques according to operation were decreased until original shape was maintained, but it was increased after 12 hrs tilling operation, and the tip shape of rotary blade was changed seriously. It is noted that the tip shape of the rotary blade is another factor affecting tilling torque, it should be desirable to study on the rotary blade tip shape to reduce tilling torque requirement after changing its original shape with wearing.
