Purpose: The use of appropriate instruments to clean surfaces with minimal change, is critical for the successful maintenance of a dental implant. However, there is no consensus about the type and methodology for such instruments. The aim of this study was to characterize changes in the roughness of titanium surfaces treated by various scaling instruments. Methods: Thirty-seven identical disks (5 mm in diameter) were investigated in this study. The specimens were divided into eight groups according to the types of instrumentation and the angle of application. Ultrasonic scaling systems were applied on a titanium disk to simulate standard clinical conditions. The equipment included a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler with a newly developed metallic tip (NS group), a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler with a conventional tip (CS group), a piezoelectric root planer ultrasonic scaler with a conventional tip (PR group), and a plastic hand curette (PH group). In addition, the sites treated using piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler systems were divided two sub-groups: 15 and 45 degrees. The treated titanium surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the average surface roughness (Ra) and mean roughness profile depth (Rz) were measured with a profilometer. Results: SEM no significant changes in the titanium surfaces in the NS group, regardless of the angle of application. The PH group also showed no marked changes to the titanium surface, although some smoothening was observed. All CS and PR sites lost their original texture and showed irregular surfaces in SEM analysis. The profilometer analysis demonstrated that the roughness values (Ra and Rz) of the titanium surfaces increased in all, except the PH and NS groups, which showed roughness decreases relative to the untreated control group. The Ra value differed significantly between the NS and PR groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that changes in or damage to titanium surfaces might be more affected by the hardness of the scaler tip than by the application method. Within the limitations of this study, the newly developed metallic scaler tip might be especially suitable for peri-implant surface decontamination, due to its limited effects on the titanium surface.

Purpose: The nose of most Koreans is characterized as a low nasal dorsum, retracted columella, and an acute columella-labial angle. For the surgical correction of the tip and columella, a modified septal extension graft, along with augmentation rhinoplasty has been developed. Methods: With this technique, a septal extension graft is fixed on the entire caudal margin of the septum (the cephalic-caudal axis) and at the same time, it is placed above the anterior nasal spine, in the membranous portion of the septum and at the base of the columella(the anterior-posterior axis). The present report describes the results obtained in 13 patients and offers an analysis of the results as judged by the columella-labial angle and 4 proportional indices(nose height index, nasal bridge length index, nasal tip projection index, columella length index), measured by photogrammetry. Results: The postoperative values obtained in these 5 categories increased significantly compared to the preoperative ones, thus confirming that the projection of tip was augmented, the nose was lengthened, and the columella was advanced caudally and lengthened. Moreover, these positive outcomes were still maintained during the follow-up period, and no side effects, such as saddle nose deformity, were reported. Conclusion: A modified septal extension graft can be considered as an effective method for the surgical correction of the nasal tip and columella in Koreans.

The effect of the flow actuator on the asymmetric vortex structure around the ogive-cylinder body with fineness ratio of 4 flying at the speed of Mach 0.1 at angle of attack of 50 degree is studied. The ogive-cylinder model is developed with the actuator placed near the nose tip and numerically simulated using the in-house CFD code named KFLOW. The numerical simulation employs two different actuator modeling: one is the boundary condition given by blowing normal to the surface and another shearing on the surface. The numerical simulation reveals that response of the vortex structure to the actuation is dependent on the type of modeling as well as the strength and direction of the actuation.
This paper studies fracture initiation direction of two parallel non-coplanar cracks of equal length. Using the dislocation pile-up modelling, singular integral equations for two parallel cracks subjected to mixed-mode loading are derived and the crack-tip field including singular and non-singular terms is obtained. The kinking angle is determined by using the maximum hoop stress criterion, or the ${\sigma}_{\theta}$-criterion. Results are presented for simple uniaxial tension and biaxial loading. The biaxiality ratio has a noticeable influence on crack growth direction. For the case of biaxial tension, when neglecting the T-stress the crack branching angle is overestimated for small crack inclination angles relative to the largest applied principal stress direction, and underestimated for large crack inclination angles.

In the previous paper, part I, the principal stresses were investigated on the normal tools and the workpieces whose materials were the same epoxy resin. In this paper, are measured and compared the stresses on the normal tools and restricted tools which have three various rake angles. Each restricted tool above has the same restricted angle. The workpieces used in this experiment are made of high quality lead. The photoelastic measuring device is attached to the saddle of the lathe and carried at the same speed as the cutting tool is feeded. The results obtained are summarized as follows; The shear stresses on the tip of the restricted tools of the rake angle .alpha.=12.deg. and .alpha.=0.deg. are less than those of normal tools. But, for the rake angle .alpha.=-12.deg., the former is greater than the latter. The result of photoelastic method shows that in the range of rapid decreasing of normal stress on the tool edge, the shear is maintaining a certain value.

This paper addresses the dynamic modeling and closed-loop eigenvibration analysis of composite rotating pretwisted fan blade modeled as non-uniform thin-walled beam with bi-convex cross-section fixed at the certain presetting angle and incorporating piezoelectric induced damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear, rotary inertia and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force field. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectiriccally induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and the beneficial effects upon the closed loop eigenvibration of the blade are highlighted.

In order ot study the influence of a circular inclusion on a stress field near a crack tip, mutual interference of a slant crack and the circular inclusion is analyzed of a bimaterial inclusion. As the crack emanates at the equivalent slant crack angle the correction factors FⅠ and FⅡ for the inclusion wit small Young's modulus were found to decrease as the inclusion radius increased. The correction factors for inclusion with large Young's modulus increase as the inclusion radius increases at the equivalent radius of the inclusion, the correction factors decrease as the slant crack angle increases for the aspect ratio $\frac{c}{W}$ = 0.1 irrespective of the Young's modulus. For $\frac{c}{W}$ greater than 0.2, they increase as the slant crack angle increases. There is no influence of stress mutual interfce after crack emanates beyond the inclusion radius.

This paper addresses the control of free and dynamic response of composite rotating pretwisted blade modeled as non-uniform thin-walled beam fixed at the certain presetting and pretwisted angle and incorporating piezoelectric induced damping capabilities. A distributed piezoelectric actuator pair is used to suppress the vibrations caused by external disturbances. The blade model incorporates non-uniform features such as transverse shear, secondary warping and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force field. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectiriccally induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and the beneficial effects upon the closed loop eigenvibration and dynamic characteristics of the blade are highlighted.

The specimens with three discontinuities have been tested in uniaxial compression. The geometry of discontinuities is changed by three different parameters: flaw inclination angle, continuity, and spacing. From the tips of the discontinuities wing and secondary cracks are observed. Wing cracks initially propagate curvilinear direction and follow loading direction after some distance from the tip of the discontinuities. Two different types of secondary cracks have been observed from the study: quasi-coplanar secondary cracks and oblique secondary cracks. From the test nine different types of coalescence are observed and they show a correlation with flaw angle and ligament angle. It is attempted to simulate the observed results by using FROCK(Fractured ROCK). FROCK is a code based on the hybridized DDM(Displacement Discontinuities Method) . It is shown that FROCK has quite potential of modeling of rock fracture processes.

This paper describes the flow field and the blade pressure distribution of a horizontal axis wind turbine in various yawed flow conditions. These measurements were carried out with 2.4m-diameter rotor with pressure sensors and a 2-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter for each azimuth angle in a wind tunnel. The results show that aerodynamic forces of the blade based on the pressure measurements change according to the local angle of attack during rotation. Therefore the wake of the yawed rotor becomes asymmetric for the rotor axis. Furthermore, the relations between aerodynamic forces and azimuth angles change according to tip speed ratio. By the experimental analysis, the flow field and the aerodynamic forces for each azimuth angle in yawed flow condition were clarified.
