  • To test the effect of various pile tip shape series of model scale loading tests were carried out on test piles with special pile tips. Special pile tips were made using the 3D printer and were attached to the bottom end of the test pile for loading tests. The pile tips were made to have 30°, 45°, 60° inclined tips, as well as a rounded tip. The main objective of the test was to observe the effect of various pile tip shapes on settlement and penetrability of the pile. Moreover, a numerical model simulating the pile loading test carried out in this study was established and verified based on the loading test results. From this, the stress concentration around the pile tip was investigated. This will allow us to analyze the decrease of stress concentration around the pile tip which is the main cause of the pile tip damage during pile installation. However, modifying the pile tip shape will eventually increase the settlement of the pile. By estimating the degree of increase in pile settlement, the viability and the efficiency of the pile shape modification was judged. In addition, case studies on the effect of different pile tip shape and ground conditions on pile settlement and stress dispersion was conducted.

  • The welding quality by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding shows very high level, but the welding speed is lower than that of gas metal arc welding. Also, the welding quality by automatic GTAW is variable as the arc characteristics is changed by the consumption of electrode tip. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the properties of tungsten electrode tip and the various arc characteristics at high current region. In this study, the high welding current 200A was applied to the repeated arc start test and long term arcing test using the $\phi$3.2 tungsten electrodes with cone angle 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$sharp tip, and 60$^{\circ}$surface polished (S.P.) sharp tip. It was confirmed that the maximum arc pressure by the initial electrode condition was highest in 45$^{\circ}$sharp tip, and the next in 60$^{\circ}$sharp tip, the last was in 30$^{\circ}$sharp tip and 60$^{\circ}$S.P.. But, the maximum arc pressure after the repeated arc start test and long term arcing test was decreased considerably. But, the maximum arc pressure was highest also in 45$^{\circ}$ sharp tip after the tests, the next was in 30$^{\circ}$sharp tip, and the last was in 60$^{\circ}$sharp tip and 60$^{\circ}$S.P.. The arc start characteristics was the most excellent in 60$^{\circ}$S.P., By long term arcing test, the lanthania included in tungsten electrode was extinguished at tip surface preferentially, therefore the arc characteristics of electrode tip got worse.

  • The K-R design curve is an engineering method of linear-elastic fracture analysis under plane-stress loading conditions. By the way, linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is valid only as long as nonlinear material deformation is confined to a small region surrounding the crack tip. Like general steels, it is virtually impossible to characterize the fracture behavior with LEFM, in many materials. Critical values of J contour integral or crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) give nearly size independent measures of fracture toughness, even for relatively large amounts of crack tip plasticity. Furthermore, the crack tip opening displacement is the only parameter that can be directly measured in the fracture test. On the other. the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) test is similar to CTOD experimentally. Moreover, the test is easier to measure the fracture toughness than other method. The shape of the CTOA curve depends on material fracture behavior and, on the opening configuration of the cracked structure. CTOA parameter describes crack tip conditions in elastic-plastic materials, and it can be used as a fracture criterion effectively. In this paper, CTOA test is performed for steel JS-SS400 hot-rolled thin plates under plane-stress loading conditions. Special experimental apparatuses are used to prevent specimens from buckling and to measure crack tip opening angle for thin compact tension (CT) specimens.

  • Tip clearance of centrifugal compressor affects the performance. Larger tip clearance results in lower efficiency. What really affects the performance is the running tip clearance, not the cold tip clearance. When the compressor is operating, blade strain and the pressure difference between impeller backplate and hub affects the running tip clearance. This paper describes measured running tip clearance and its effects on the performance of centrifugal compressor. Cold tip clearance before operation was 0.4 mm and running tip clearance varied from 0.86 mm to 0.25 mm with impeller exit pressure. As the pressure at impeller exit increases, the running tip clearance tends to decreases. The target running tip clearance for Compressor at $100\%$ speed was 0.3 mm, and it turned out to be exactly 0.30 mm from experiment.

  • In this study, a small-scaled test system for a tip jet rotor was developed to contribute to the research on unmanned compound rotorcraft. The performance and dynamic characteristics of the tip jet rotor were investigated using the test system. The diameter of the tip jet rotor was set to 2m in consideration of the size of the test site and the pneumatic supply capacity of the. The rotating speed of the rotor was controlled by the pressure of the compressed air. The thrust and forces during the rotor rotation were measured using a load measuring device. A hydraulic actuator was installed for the dynamic test and full-bridge strain gages were attached to the root of each blade to measure the flap, lag, and torsion-wise responses generated when the rotor is excited by the actuator. The performance and dynamic characteristic tests were conducted at various rotor speeds and blade pitches. In order to check the validity of the test results, the results were also compared with the CAMRAD II analysis.

  • In friction and wear tests that use friction force microscopy (FFM), the wear debris transfer to the tip apex that changes tip radius is a crucial issue that influences the friction and wear performances of films and coatings with nanoscale thicknesses. In this study, FFM tests are performed for bilayer $MoS_2$ film to obtain a better understanding of how geometrical and chemical changes of tip apex influence the friction and wear properties of nanoscale molecular layers. The critical load can be estimated from the test results based on the clear distinction of the failure area. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy are employed to measure and observe the geometrical and chemical changes of the tip apex. Under normal loads lower than 1000 nN, the reuse of tips enhances the friction and wear performance at the tip-sample interface as the contact pair changes with the increase of tip radius. Therefore, the reduction of contact pressure due to the increase of tip radius by the transfer of $MoS_2$ or Mo-dominant wear debris and the change of contact pairs from diamond/$MoS_2$ to partial $MoS_2$ or Mo/$MoS_2$ can explain the critical load increase that results from tip reuse. We suggest that the wear debris transfer to the tip apex should be considered when used tips are repeatedly employed to identify the tribological properties of ultra-thin films using FFM.

  • Surface energies calculated from measured contact angles between several solutions and test samples, such as Si wafer, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$, PTFE(Polytertrafluoroethylene), and DLC(Diamond Like Carbon) films, based on geometric mean method and Lewis acid base method. In order to relate roughness to adhesion force, surface roughness of test samples were scanned large area and small by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy). Roughness was representative of test samples in large scan area and comparable with AFM tip radius in small scan area. Adhesion forces between AFM tip and test samples were matched well with order of roughness rather then surface energy. When AFM tips having different radius were used to measure adhesion force on DLCI film, sharper AFM tip was, smaller adhesion force was measured. Therefore contact area was more important factor to determine adhesion force.

  • The objective of this work was to investigate the pintle-tip shape effect on nozzle flow and thrust by cold flow test. When nozzle throat area was decreased by pintle movement, chamber pressure was increased monotonously but thrust was increased differently according to every pintle-tip shape. At the same chamber pressure and nozzle throat area, thrust of convex pintle-tip shape was mostly larger than that of concave one. Nozzle wall pressure distribution and magnitude of pintle-tip load depended on the pintle-tip shape, pintle position and nozzle throat area.
