  • One of the main objectives of the U.S. Census Bureau is the proper estimation of median household income for small areas. These estimates have an important role in the formulation of various governmental decisions and policies. Since direct survey estimates are available annually for each state or county, it is desirable to exploit the longitudinal trend in income observations in the estimation procedure. In this study, we consider Fay-Herriot type small area models which include time-specific random effect to accommodate any unspecified time varying income pattern. Analysis is carried out in a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology. We have evaluated our estimates by comparing those with the corresponding census estimates of 1999 using some commonly used comparison measures. It turns out that among three types of time-specific random effects the small area model with a time series random walk component provides estimates which are superior to both direct estimates and the Census Bureau estimates.

  • In this thesis, a new channel estimation technique is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) over time varying channels. The channel estimation algorithm exploits the fact that the estimated channel impulse response (CIR) by using pilot signal is the average value of the CIR variation within an OFDM symbol period. With this fact, the CIR variation is simply estimated through lowpass interpolation of the CIRs of the adjacent OFDM symbols. For signal detection, a time domain equalizer is used in this thesis. Simulation results show that the proposed system improves the bit error rate (BER) over time varying channels.

  • In this paper model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of linear time-varying(LTV) systems is considered. MRAC for a linear time invariant(LTI) system does not assure the boundedness of the output and parameter estimation errors in the presence of time variations of the parameters. However, changing the adaptive laws such as use of $\sigma$-modification can result in the boundedness of the output and parameter estimation errors[5]. Together with the $\sigma$-modification in the adaptive law, we also modify the control law by adding an additional term to the standard control law. The additional term leads to smaller bounds of the output and parameter estimation errors when compared to the case where only the standard control law is applied.

  • Leading companies have embraced the new economy with new and innovative BTO models. Instead of conventional company-oriented manufacturing scheduling, customer-oriented scheduling method attracts more and more attention. To evaluate the delivery of customer order in advance, the real production capacity as well as procurement lead time should be taken into account. This paper describes a quasi-real-time order delivery estimation system using TOC(Theory of Constraints) based scheduling method.

  • An iterative learning control scheme for exact-tracking control and parameter estimation of uncertain robotic system is preented. In the learning control structure, the control input converges globally and asymtotically to the desired input as iteration increases. Since convergence of parameter errors depends only on the persistent exciting condition of system trajectories along the iteration independently of the time-duration of trajectories, it may be achieved with system trajectories with small duration. In addition, the proposd learning control schemes are applicable to time-varying parametric systems as well as time-invariant systems, because the parameter estimation is performed at each fixed time along the iteration. In the parameter estimator, the acceleration information as well as the inversion of estimated inertia matrix are not used at all, which makes the proposed learning control schemes more feasible.

  • When manufacturing mold dies, an operation sheet is required for each part of the mold dies. The consistent estimation of standard operation time in the operation sheet is difficult, because the estimation is mainly based on subjective judgement. In order to resolve it, concept of feature is introduced in this study. For CAD/CAPP integration, feature technology is being implemented to represent geometrical and technological information of part drawings. A feature database has already been designed, and then used to generate data for process and operation planning modules. Related to this former research, standard operation time is calculated using the feature information and tables used in a real factory.

  • In this paper, a new input estimation algorithm is proposed for target tracking problem. The unknown target maneuver is approximated by a linear combination of independent time functions and the coefficients are estimated by using a weighted least-squares estimation technique. The proposed algorithm is verified by computer simulation of a realistic two-dimensional tracking problem. The proposed algorithm provides significant improvements in estimation performance over the conventional input estimation techniques based on the constant-input assumption.

  • In this paper, we propose a high-resolution time-frequency domain reflectometry technique as a methodology of detection and estimation of faults on a wire. This method adopts the time-frequency cross correlation characteristics of the observed signal in both time and frequency domains simultaneously. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified with experiments using a RG type coaxial cable and comparing it with traditional time domain as well as frequency domain reflectometry methods. It is clearly shown here that the proposed algorithm produces excellent results compared to the conventional methods for single as well as multiple fault cables.

  • Accurate estimation of the first arrival travel time is an essential task to obtain a high resolution velocity tomogram. Accuracy of the travel time estimation may be influenced by two factors; geological and mechanical. A serious mechanical factor is the source firing control problems. We found the control problems in the records generated by tome impulsive borehole sources. The problems are; irregular firing control and uncertainty in estimation of the absolute firing-times shown in records. Definitely, the time difference will introduce an error to the first arrival times, and accordingly; it will cause some distortion in the resulting velocity tomogram. A method to determine the firing time is suggested here. The method determines the optimum onset time by comparing the horizontal and the NMO velocity with various amount of delay time adjustment.

  • In this paper, we present a method to estimate an accurate real-time sound source direction based on time delay of arrival by using generalized cross correlation with four cross-type microphones. In general, existing systems have two disadvantages such as system embedding limitation due to the necessity of data acquisition for signal processing from microphone input, and real-time processing difficulty because of the increased number of channels for sound direction estimation using DSP processors. To cope with these disadvantages, the system considered in this paper proposes hardware design for enhanced real-time processing using microphone array signal processing. An accurate direction estimation and its design time reduction is achieved by means of an efficient hardware design using spatial segmentation methods and verification techniques. Finally we develop a system which can be used for embedded systems using a sound codec and an FPGA chip. According to experimental results, the system gives much faster real-time processing time compared with either PC-based systems or the case with DSP processors.
