  • This paper deals with hybrid MAC protocol design for underwater acoustic networks. The proposed MAC protocol has the cluster structure with a master node and slave nodes, and the hybrid network structure that combines a contention free period based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) with a contention period. The suggested MAC protocol has a beacon packet for supervising network, a guard period between time slots for packet collision, time tag for estimation of propagation delay with a master node, the time synchronization of nodes, entering and leaving of network, and the communication method among nodes. In this paper, we adapt the proposed hybrid MAC protocol to AUV network, that is the representative mobile device of underwater acoustic network, and verify this protocol is applicable in real underwater acoustic network environment.

  • Intercarrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, which causes substantial performance degradation in time-varying fading channels, is analyzed. An equivalent spreading code formulation is derived based on the analogy of OFDM and code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Techniques as linear multiuser detection in CDMA systems are applied to suppress the ICI in OFDM systems. The performance of linear detection, measured using multiuser efficiency and asymptotic multiuser efficiency, is analyzed given the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI), which serves as an upper bound for the performance of practical systems. For systems without CSI, time domain and frequency domain channel estimation based linear detectors are proposed. The performance gains and robustness of a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) filter over a traditional filter (TF) and matched filter (MF) in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are demonstrated with numerical simulation results.

  • Future wireless communication systems are expected to provide a broad range of multimedia services in which the asymmetry of traffic load between uplink and downlink is a significant feature. The rode division multiple access system with tune division duplex mode (CDMA/TDD) is a good solution to cope with the traffic asymmetry problem. However. the TDD system is subject to inter-cell interference compared to frequency division duplex (FDD) system. Since both uplink and downlink share the same frequency in TDD. uplink and downlink may interfere each other especially when neighboring cells require different rates of asymmetry. Thus, time slot allocation for tells is an important issue in TDD. In this paper. we propose a genetic algorithm based time slot allocation scheme which maximizes the residual system capacity. The proposed scheme allows that each cell employ different level of uplink/downlink asymmetry and satisfies the interference requirement.

  • Wibro(Wibro - Wireless Broadband Internet ) is a system that can accept effectively the IP-based Wireless data traffic with upward / downward asymmetric transfer characteristic by using a Wirelss broadband transfer technology in OFDMA/TDD (Orthogonal frequency Division Multiple Access/Time Division Duplex). Wibro service should support handover to maintain connection continuously in movement because the service is based on If system which is different from cellular system. Current Micro Mobility system and general Mobile If system has got a problem of delayed speed and lost packets during handover. IETF protocol has been proposed for minimizing this problem and its standardization is under process, mainly focused on Mip4, Mip6 and Mipshop WG. This article studies and analyzes an effective method of minimizing handover delay to improve the problem of WiBro system and its revitalization & outlook.

  • In this paper, the frequency sharing issue between cellular time division duplex-orthogonal frequency division multiple access (TDD-OFDMA) Systems and terrestrial Fixed Systems has been studied. The conventional advanced minimum coupling loss (A-MCL) includes only the formulation to calculate the interference from one interfering system. Therefore, A-MCL must be modified to assess the aggregated interference from base stations(BS) and mobile stations(MS). By applying the modified model, the coexistence analysis are done according to the average number of MS per sector, BS-to-BS distance, and the main beam direction of the terrestrial fixed system. In the case of 20 MS per sector, the BS-to-BS distance and the minimum distance between a terrestrial fixed system and BS are 5.8 km and 2.5 km, respectively. It is about 25dB that the difference between maximum and minimum interference signal power which varies with the main beam direction of the terrestrial fixed system. Moreover, for 40% of the main beam direction of the terrestrial fixed system, interference signal power is less than the maximum permissible interference.

  • This study seeks to improve NFRDI Serial Oceanographic observation (NSO) system which has been operated at current observation stations in the Korean Seas since 1961 and suggests the direction of NSO for practical use of Korean operational oceanographic system. For improvement, data handling by human after CTD (Conductivity-Temperature-Depth) observation on the deck, data transmission, data reception in the land station, and file storage into database need to be automated. Software development to execute QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) of real-time oceanographic observation data and to transmit the data with conversion to appropriate format automatically will help to accomplish the automation. Inmarsat satellite telecommunication systems with which have already been equipped on board the current observation vessels can realize the real-time transmission of the data. For the near real-time data transmission, CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) wireless telecommunication can provide efficient transmission in coastal area. Real-time QA/QC procedure after CTD observation will help to prevent errors which can be derived from various causes.

  • Inter-cell coordination has been an emerging issue for mitigating inter-cell interference in broadband wireless access networks such as IEEE802.16 and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution). This paper proposes uplink/downlink hybrid inter-cell coordination patterns for a TDD (Time Division Duplex)/MC-CDMA (Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access) system. For the performance analysis, closed forms of inter-cell interferences are derived when uplink and downlink transmissions coexist over a multi-cell environment. In the analysis, we find an optimal ratio of downlink transmit powers of BSs (Base Stations) based on the target outage probability and the performance according to ratios of uplink/downlink transmit powers of MSs (Mobile Stations)/BSs is explored. Our numerical results show that interference mitigation utilizing the characteristics of the uplink and downlink power ratio is very effective in improving system performance in terms of QoS.

  • It is known that adaptive minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers exhibit better performance than coventional single-user code division multiple access (CDMA) receivers in fixed (or static) channels and have the simple structure compared to other multi-user CDMA receivers. In practice, the radio channels are fading channels where the amplitude and phase of the received signal are time-varying and the sufficient signal-to-noise ratio is not always guaranteed. Thus, the performance of adaptive MMSE receivers is severely degraded in fading environments. We propose a new structure and adaptation algorithm for an adaptive MMSE receivers. Based on computer simulation results, it is observed that the proposed receiver demonstrates substantial performance improvement over currently available adaptive MMSE receivers in fading environments.

  • The focus of this paper is a proposal for a computationally efficient dynamic subcarrier allocation (DSA) algorithm for orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. The proposed DSA algorithm considerably reduces the computational complexity and the amount of channel quality information (CQI) compared to amplitude craving greedy (ACG) algorithms, which use full CQI. At the same time, the performance of the proposed algorithm closely appear to ACG algorithms. Moreover, the authors present a new bandwidth-assignment algorithm produced by modifying bandwidth assignment based on the signal-to-noise ratio (BABS). This modified BABS algorithm enables the proposed DSA algorithm to produce a strong outage performance gain over the conventional scheme.
