This paper presents the results of four long-term experiments carried out to investigate the time-dependent behaviour of composite floor slabs with particular attention devoted to the development of non-uniform shrinkage through the slab thickness. This is produced by the presence of the steel deck which prevents moisture egress to occur from the underside of the slab. To observe the influence of different drying conditions on the development of shrinkage, the four 3.3 m long specimens consisted of two composite slabs cast on Stramit Condeck $HP^{(R)}$ steel deck and two reinforced concrete slabs, with the latter ones having both faces exposed for drying. During the long-term tests, the samples were maintained in a simply-supported configuration subjected to their own self-weight, creep and shrinkage for four months. Separate concrete samples were prepared and used to measure the development of shrinkage through the slab thickness over time for different drying conditions. A theoretical model was used to predict the time-dependent behaviour of the composite and reinforced concrete slabs. This approach was able to account for the occurrence of non-uniform shrinkage and comparisons between numerical results and experimental measurements showed good agreement. This work highlights the importance of considering the shrinkage gradient in predicting shrinkage deformations of composite slabs. Further comparisons with experimental results are required to properly validate the adequacy of the proposed approach for its use in routine design.
The behaviour of a reinforced concrete tension member is governed by the contribution of concrete between cracks, tension stiffening effect. Under highly repeated loading, this contribution is progressively reduced and the member response approximates that given by the fully cracked member. When focusing on the unloaded state, experiments show deformations larger than those of the naked reinforcement. This has been referred to as negative tension stiffening and is due to the fact that concrete carries compressive stresses along the crack spacing, even thought the tie is subjected to an external tensile force. In this paper a cycle-dependent approach is presented to reproduce the behaviour of the axially loaded tension member, paying attention to the negative tension stiffening contribution. The interaction of cyclic bond degradation and time-dependent effects of concrete is investigated. Finally, some practical diagrams are given to account for the negative tension stiffening effect in reinforced concrete elements.
The greenschist in the Jinping II Hydropower Station in southwest China exhibits continuous creep behaviour because of the geological conditions in the region. This phenomenon illustrates the time-dependent deformation and progressive damage that occurs after excavation. In this study, the responses of greenschist to stress over time were determined in a series of laboratory tests on samples collected from the access tunnel walls at the construction site. The results showed that the greenschist presented time-dependent behaviour under long-term loading. The samples generally experienced two stages: transient creep and steady creep, but no accelerating creep. The periods of transient creep and steady creep increased with increasing stress levels. The long-term strength of the greenschist was identified based on the variation of creep strain and creep rate. The ratio of long-term strength to conventional strength was around 80% and did not vary much with confining pressures. A quantitative method for predicting the failure period of greenschist, based on analysis of the stress-strain curve, is presented and implemented. At a confining pressure of 40 MPa, greenschist was predicted to fail in 5000 days under a stress of 290 MPa and to fail in 85 days under the stress of 320 MPa, indicating that the long-term strength identified by the creep rate and creep strain is a reliable estimate.
Comparisons in shear behaviour are made between aqueous suspensions of a laterite ore and aqueous suspensions of pure goethite ($\alpha$-FeOOH), following prior papers in which the rheologies of the two mineral suspensions were characterized individually. Drawing comparisons is appropriate because the ore sample was about 65% goethite and it was originally thought that the pure goethite might serve as a model of the more complex laterite. Viscosity measurements of the two suspensions show that, at the same solids fraction, the goethite suspensions were more viscous by an order of magnitude, even though the goethite particles had much smaller aspect ratios. Similarly, yield stresses for the goethite suspensions were at least an order of magnitude higher. The most significant difference was in transient behaviour. Time-dependent effects were investigated by subjecting a fluid to a step change or a ramp sequence in shear rate, and measuring the resulting shear stress over time. In most cases, transient behaviour could not be detected in the goethite suspensions, whereas stresses in the laterite suspensions relaxed over periods of order 10 seconds. The disparate results indicate that a goethite suspension is a poor model of a laterite slurry.

A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the behaviour of interfacial layer of saltwater wedge in estuary. Experimental conditions have been established according to densimetric Froude number, which is a dimensionless number comparing inertia force with buoyancy due to the density difference. To observe the behaviour of saltwater wedge, conductivity meter has been used to detect salinity. Time averaged and temporal variation of observed properties have been analyzed to determine and investigate the interfacial layer. The location and profile of interfacial layers have shown the dependency on densimetric Froude number. The thickness of interfacial layer has been also dependent on the variation of densimetric Froude number.

In this paper, behaviour of underground structural systems due to excavation and change of groundwater level is analyzed using finite elements. Equilibrium equations based on the effective pressure theory and transient flow equations considering the groundwater level are derived. Integration equations are derived using Galerkin's approximation and time dependent analysis is employed to compute groundwater level change and pore pressures. This computed pore pressures are employed in equilibrium equations and then finally displacements and stresses are computed. The developed program is applied to analyze the behaviour of ground excavation below the groundwater level. The program is also applied to multi-step excavation at the same model. The results show that the displacements of the ground surface are much influenced by the change of the groundwater level. Therefore, it is concluded that the change of the groundwater level should be considered in order to analyze the behaviour of the underground structural systems accurately
The conventional design of prestressed concrete box girder bridges has been based on the linear elastic analyses using simplified geometric models. To overcome the restriction involved in the simplifications, a macro element for the rational analysis of prestressed concrete box girder bridges with variable cross sections is incorporated in the present analysis. Through the adoption of nonlinear material models, the behaviour of prestressed box bridges up to ultimate loading stage can be examined. The time dependent material models included in the present macro element code enable to predict the long term behaviour of prestressed concrete box girder bridges. The proposed macro element code with the nonlinear material models and time dependent routines can be efficiently used for the realistic analysis of prestressed concrete box girder bridges with arbitrary shapes.
Various approaches have been applied to transform aquaculture from a manual, labour-intensive industry to one dependent on automation technologies in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. Technologies associated with the monitoring of physical condition have successfully been applied in most aquafarm facilities; however, real-time biological monitoring systems that can observe fish condition and behaviour are still required. In this study, we used a video recorder placed on top of a fish tank to observe the swimming patterns of rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus), first one fish alone and then a group of five fish. Rock bream in the video samples were successfully identified using the you-only-look-once v3 algorithm, which is based on the Darknet-53 convolutional neural network. In addition to recordings of swimming behaviour under normal conditions, the swimming patterns of fish under abnormal conditions were recorded on adding an anaesthetic or lowering the salinity. The abnormal conditions led to changes in the velocity of movement (3.8 ± 0.6 cm/s) involving an initial rapid increase in speed (up to 16.5 ± 3.0 cm/s, upon 2-phenoxyethanol treatment) before the fish stopped moving, as well as changing from swimming upright to dying lying on their sides. Machine learning was applied to datasets consisting of normal or abnormal behaviour patterns, to evaluate the fish behaviour. The proposed algorithm showed a high accuracy (98.1%) in discriminating normal and abnormal rock bream behaviour. We conclude that artificial intelligence-based detection of abnormal behaviour can be applied to develop an automatic bio-management system for use in the aquaculture industry.

It is well known fact that all rocks exhibit brittle properties and time depends strain properties (creep). An understanding of the time dependent deformation behaviour of rocks is believed to be essential in the field of civil and tunnelling. The rock and concrete creep in various forms of loading conditions and physical environment are reviewed. A comparison of creep behaviour between rocks and concrete is provided, in order to bring two existing relatively independent methods of predicting creep strain closer together. It was felt that the physical process in the creep of rocks would be similar to the process in creep of concrete. Since experiments and observations have shown that non-elastic (creep) mechanical behaviour of all crystalline solids (i.e., concrete, rocks, ceramics and refractories) and single materials have a common base. Also a comparison of the results for the accepted methods of estimating creep in rocks and concrete under - multiaxial loading was attempted to extend the knowledge of deformational characteristics of these two materials.
Concrete filled steel tubes (CFSTs) are extensively used in a variety of structures due to their structural and economic advantages over other types of structures. Considerable research has been conducted with regards to their short-term behaviour, and very limited studies have focused on their long-term behaviour. In this study, a series of tests were carried out on high strength squat (short) CFSTs and concrete cylinders under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity to better understand their time dependent behaviour. A number of parameters were investigated including the influence of steel and concrete bond, confinement, level of sustained load and sizes of specimens. The results revealed that creep strains increased by more than 40% if there was no bonding between steel tube and concrete core. As expected, creep and shrinkage of concrete inside a steel tube were significantly less than those developed in exposed concrete. At the end of a creep period of six months, all the specimens were tested to failure to observe the influence of sustained loads on the ultimate strength. It was found that creep does not have a major effect on the strength of short CFSTs in the specific experimental study conducted here, which was less than 2.5%.
