  • In this study, the dynamic flying characteristics of the worn head sliders are investigated theoretically due to the change in head geometry caused by head and disk contact. The film shapes can be approximated as taper- truncated cycloidal-flat film. Two-dimensional time dependent modified Reynolds equation included molecular slip effect are formulated with neglected the roughness effect. The motion of head slider was assumed to have two degree of freedom in this work. Finite difference approximation with Newton Raphson iterative technique and the fourth order Runge-Kutta method were implemented to obtain the transient response of the slider head with various change in head geometry numerically and compared with the transient response of the IBM3380 type head slider. The simulation results show the film shape has affects significantly on the static and dynamic characteristic of slider head in magnetic storage systems.

  • This paper presents a method to predict the transient characteristic of the air lubricated slider head in a hard disk drive by using optimization technique. The time dependent modified Reynolds equation based on the molecular slip flow approximation equations was used to describe the fluid flow within the air bearing and the implicit finite difference scheme is applied to calculate the pressure distribution under the slider head. The exhaustive search combined with the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method were employed to obtain optimum design variables which are taper angle, rail width and taper length in order to keep the forces and moments acting on the slider head in dynamic equilibrium. The results show that the optimal head slider of the magnetic head has good stability characteristic that can reach the steady state within 0.5 microsecond.

  • A channel flow with a high Reynolds number but coarse grids is numerically studied to investigate the prediction possibility of its turbulence which is three-dimensional and time-dependent. In the present paper, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a Navier-Stokes equation with no model are tested with a new approach of hybrid RANS/LES, which reduces to RANS model in the boundary layers and at separation, and to Smagorinsky-like LES downstream of separation, and then compared with each other. It is found that the simulations of hybrid RANS/LES method sustain turbulence like those of LES and with no model, and the results are stable and fairly accurate. This indicates strongly that gradual improvements could lead to a simple, stable, and accurate approach to predict turbulence phenomena of wall-bounded flow.

  • In this paper the characteristics of Hydrostatic Bearing of piston of cylinder are investigated . The dynamic characteristic equations of piston considering both parallel and rotational motion and time dependent modified Reynolds Equation are analyzed and the dynamic pressure distribution of oil film is numerically calculated by perturbation method and finite difference method. and the atatic analysis is carried out. so, the influence of design parameter of piston on the characteristic of bearing is analyzed.

  • Three-dimensional time-dependent flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated using direct numerical simulation for Reynolds number 280 and 300. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial distributions along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. In x-y plane, the convection term is applied by the 5th order upwind scheme and the pressure and viscosity terms are applied by the 4th order central difference. And in spanwise, Navier-Stokes equation is distributed using of Spectral Method. At Reynolds number 259 the two-dimensional wake becomes linearly unstable to a second branch of modes with wavelength about 1.0 diameters at onset (B-mode). Present results of three-dimensional effects of in wake of a circular cylinder is represented with spanwise and streamwise vorticity contours as Reynolds numbers.

  • The two dimensional time dependent flow past a circular cylinder is analyzed numerically. In the analysis, equations of conservation of mass and momentum are transformed to equations of stream function-vorticity and vorticity transport, and nondimensionalized by nondimensional parameters representing flow characteristics, The resulting stream function-vorticity equation and vorticity transport equation are solved by successive over relaxation scheme and alternating direct implicit scheme. Numerical experiments are performed for the flow in the range of Reynolds number 125 to 275. The time dependent streamlines, vorticities, pressure on cylinder surface, separation angle, and drag and lift coefficients are calculated, and the method for estimation of pressure on cylinder surface and the outer boundary limit are developed.

  • EHL analysis of connecting rod bearing is proposed which includes effects of temperature variation in lubrication film. Lubrication film temperature is treated as a time-dependent, two-dimensional variable which is averaged over the film thickness, while connecting rod big end temperature is assumed to be time-independent and three-dimensional. It is assumed that a portion of the heat generated by viscous dissipation in the lubrication Him is absorbed by the film itself, and the remainder flows into the bearing surface. Mass-conserving cavitation algorithm is applied and the effect of variable viscosity is included to solve the Reynolds equation. Simulation results of the connecting rod bearing of internal combustion engine are presented. It is shown that the temperature variation has remarkable effects on the bearing performance. It is concluded that the EHL analysis considering effects of the temperature variation is strongly recommended to predict the bearing performance of connecting rod big end On internal combustion engine.

  • Laminar two-dimensional time-dependent flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated using direct numerical simulation for the low Reynolds number (Re=164∼280). The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial distributions along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The convection term is applied by the 7th order up wind scheme and the pressure and viscosity terms are applied by the 4th order central difference. The grid system makes use of the regular grid system and it is generated by an equation. The calculated results of drag coefficients, lift coefficients, pressure distributions, and vorticity contours and other information are compared with experimental and numerical ones. These results obtained by the present DNS show good agreement with the previous studies.
