  • This study presents a method to solidify spent ion-exchange resin (IER) in a metakaolin-based geopolymer and shows results of mechanical strength, immersion, leaching, irradiation, and thermal cycling tests for waste acceptance criteria (WAC) to repository. The geopolymer waste form with 20 wt% of simulated spent IER met the WAC in South Korea (ROK), and the leaching tests of various sized-waste forms up to 15.0 × 30.0 cm and waste loadings up to 20 wt% for 1-5 d and 1-90 d achieved a leachability index, Li > 6. In a leaching test for 5 d, the cumulative fraction leached (CFL) for Cs, which leached the most, was linearly correlated with the square root of leaching time for all waste forms, and Li increased as the size of the waste form increased. The CFL was also correlated with elapsed time in the 90 d leaching test. The correlations among CFL, time, and volume-to-surface area ratio of waste forms used to estimate the Li of Cs of a 200-L sized geopolymer with 15 wt% IER showed the Li values as 14.73 (5 d) and 17.71 (90 d), respectively, indicating that the large-sized geopolymer waste form met the WAC.

  • The prediction of the temperature distribution change of the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister and its surrounding structures (bentonite buffer, granitic rock etc.) due to the spent fuel heat is very important for the design of the 500m deep granitic repository for the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister (about 10,000 years long) deposition. In this study, the temperature distribution change of the composite structure which comprises the canister, the bentonite buffer, the deposition tunnel due to the spent fuel heat is computed using the numerical analysis method. Specially, the temperature distribution change of the composite structure is analysed as the deposition time elapses up to m years. The analysis result shows that the temperature of each part of the repository increases slowly in different way but the latest part temperature increases slowly up to 150 years and thereafter decreases slowly.

  • This study examines the relationship between second language use outside of class and oral proficiency development. It first identifies out-of-class activities of international graduate students in the U.S. and the average time spent speaking English in those out-of-class activities. Interviews and student self-measurements of time spent speaking English each day were used to investigate the types and quantities of out-of-class activities. In addition, two sets of student oral proficiency test scores were collected. Correlation analysis is used to find out the relationship of the variables between the most salient out-of-class activities and oral proficiency gains. The findings indicate that second language use outside of class is important for international graduate students to improve their oral proficiency. This is especially true with regularized interaction such as talking at work and the average time spent speaking in English a day outside of class. This study suggests that learners of English in an ESL environment should be encouraged to take part in out-of-class activities in addition to English use in the classroom in order for them to improve their oral proficiency.

  • For several decades, many countries operating nuclear power plants have been studying the various disposal alternatives to dispose of the spent nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive waste safely. In this paper, as a direct disposal of spent nuclear fuels for deep geological disposal concept, the rod consolidation from spent fuel assembly for the disposal efficiency was considered and analyzed. To do this, a concept of spent fuel rod consolidation was described and the related concepts of disposal canister and disposal system were reviewed. With these concepts, several thermal analyses were carried out to determine whether the most important requirement of the temperature limit for a buffer material was satisfiedin designing an engineered barrier of a deep geological disposal system. Based on the results of thermal analyses, the deposition hole distance, disposal tunnel spacing and heat release area of a disposal canister were reviewed. And the unit disposal areas for each case were calculated and the disposal efficiencies were evaluated. This evaluation showed that the rod consolidation of spent nuclear fuel had no advantages in terms of disposal efficiency. In addition, the cooling time of spent nuclear fuels from nuclear power plant were reviewed. It showed that the disposal efficiency for the consolidated spent fuel rods could be improved in the case that cooling time was 70 years or more. But, the integrity of fuels and other conditions due to the longer term storage before disposal should be analyzed.

  • Wintering behavior of mallards Anas platyrhynchos was studied from November 1995 to February 1996 at wintering habitats : Seosan reclaimed site, Oksan reservoir, and Kum river in Korea. The population of wintering mallards in maximum count was about 35, 000 at Sosan, 500 at Oksan and 1, 680 at Kum river, respectively. In Seosan area, mallards spent more time on water surface. In Kum river and Oksan reservoir, however, they spent more time in riversides. During the daylight hours, mallards spent more time in riversides and ground as the time passes by in the area. Behavioral patterns varied with habitat type, by days and months. Resting was a major time expenditure of mallards on water surface and riversides, and feeding occured occasionally on the ground. During the daytime, feeding and resting activities increased as time passed toward dusks However, time spendings for locmotion and comfort were decreased when it is close to the sun sets. Major disturbance factors within the habitats were identified the local traffics of humans, boats, aircrafts and motor vehicles. Among them, human was the most frequently affecting disturbance factor to the wintering mallards.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of sex role orientation on the amount of time spent in meal preparation and cleanup, clothing care, and indoor cleaning accomplished by husbands and wives in couple-headed households in the U.S.. The overall research hypotheses examined were : (1) there is a relationship between demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the husband and wife and the sex role orientation of the husband and wife; (2) for both husbands and wives, there is a relationship between sex role orientation and the amount of household production time that is accomplised by each individual; and (3) the relationship between sex role orientation and the amount of household production time remains when demographic and socioeconomic factors are controlled. The 1981 data from the 1975-1981 Time Use Longitudinal Panel Study collected at the University of Michigan were used for this study. The major findings is that a relationship between sex role orientation and the amount of time spent in three household production activities was not found, when all independent variables were controlled. That is, sex activities was not found, when all independent variables were controlled. That is, sex role orientation was not a predictor affecting the amount of time that husbands and wives spend on meal preparation and cleanup, clothing care, and indoor cleaning.

  • Among the several options to solve PWR spent fuel accumulation problem in Korea, the dry storage method could be the most realistic and applicable solution in the near future. As the basic objectives of dry storage are to prevent a gross rupture of spent fuel during operation and to keep its retrievability until transportation, at the same time the importance of a spent fuel integrity evaluation that can estimate its condition at the final stage of dry storage is very high. According to the national need and technology progress, two representative nations of spent fuel dry storage, the USA and Japan, have established different system temperature criteria, which is the only controllable factor in a dry storage system. However, there are no technical criteria for this evaluation in Korea yet, it is necessary to review the previously well-organized methodologies of advanced countries and to set up our own domestic evaluation direction due to the nation's need for dry storage. To satisfy this necessity, building a domestic spent fuel test database should be the first step. Based on those data, it is highly recommended to compare domestic data range with foreign results, to build our own criteria, and to expand on evaluation work into recently issued integrity problems by using a comprehensive integrity evaluation code.

  • Unsteady thermal processes in storage containers with spent nuclear fuel were modeled. The daily fluctuations of outer ambient temperatures were taken into account. The modeling approach, which is based on the solving of conjugate and inverse heat transfer problems, was verified by comparison of measured and calculated temperatures in outer channels. The time delays in the reaching of maximal temperatures for each spent fuel assembly were calculated. Results of numerical investigations show that daily fluctuation of outer temperatures does not have a large influence on the maximal temperatures of stored spent fuel, so that fluctuation can be neglected and only daily average temperature should be considered for safety estimation using the "best estimation" approach.
