  • A study of adiabatic shear band formation and propagation of 4340 steel was done using the stepped speciment which was subjected to high velocity impact. The high velocity impact was performed on compression Hopkinson bar impact machine. After the controlled impact, the specimen was prepared for visual inspection. Numerical simulation was also performed with same geometrical dimension using explicit time integration finite element code. Experimental results were then compared with the numerical prediction. It was found that the numerical prediction is quite accurate, average thickness of adiabatic shear band is about $10{\mu}m$, the macro crack around shoulder is due to folding, and the deformation control ring is effective to freeze the propagation of adiabatic shear band.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of earthquake on apartment prices. Many studies have been done analyzing the relationship between natural hazards and residential property prices. Most studies have shown that natural hazards have an negative effect on residential property prices, but some studies have shown that natural hazards have an positive effect on residential property prices. These conflicting analysis result from the lack of considering natural hazard frequency at the analysis site. According to literature reviews risk avoidance tendency are already inherent in prices, thus distorting the relationship between natural hazards and prices. That is, in order to analyze the impact of natural hazards on residential property prices, analysis must be carried out in areas where there has not suffered natural hazard for a long time or where there has been no damage before. Nevertheless, previous studies analyzed areas frequently affected by natural hazards. Gyeongju has been recognized as a safe area from earthquake in the past, an 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in September 2016. Analysis results focusing on Gyeongju Earthquake case has shown that the earthquake has affected decrease of apartment prices in hazardous areas, and after earthquake apartment prices have risen over time.

  • Purpose: This study analyzes the impact of weather conditions, holidays, and sporting events on beer sales, providing insights for market strategy and inventory management in the beer industry. Research design, data and methodology: Beer types were classified into Lagers and Ales, with further subcategories. The study utilized weekly retail sales data from January 2018 to August 2020, provided by Nielsen Korea. An ARMAX model was employed for time-series analysis. Results: The analysis revealed that increasing temperatures positively influence sales of Pilsners and Pale Lagers. Conversely, higher precipitation levels negatively affect overall Lager sales. Among Ales, only Stout sales showed a significant decrease with increased rainfall. Sunshine duration did not significantly impact sales for any beer type. Humidity generally had little effect on beer sales, with the exception of Amber Lagers, which showed sensitivity to humidity changes. Holidays and sporting events were found to significantly boost sales across most beer types, although the specific impacts varied by beer category. Conclusions: This study offers a detailed analysis of how weather conditions and specific events influence different beer type sales. The findings provide valuable insights for breweries, beer processors, and retailers to optimize their market strategies and inventory management based on weather forecasts and seasonal events. By understanding the consumption patterns of each beer type in relation to environmental factors, businesses can better anticipate demand fluctuations and tailor their operations accordingly.

  • This paper describes the results of experiments and numerical simulation studies on the impact and indentation damage created by low-velocity impact subjected onto honeycomb sandwich panels for application to the BIMODAL tram. The test panels were subjected to low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at six energy levels. Contact force histories as a function of time were evaluated and compared. The extent of the damage and depth of the permanent indentation was measured quantitatively using a 3-dimensional scanner. An explicit finite element analysis based on LS-DYNA3D was focused on the introduction of a material damage model and numerical simulation of low-velocity impact responses on honeycomb sandwich panels. Extensive material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the metallic and composite face-sheet materials and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb core material. Good agreement was obtained between numerical and experimental results; in particular, the numerical simulation was able to predict impact damage area and the depth of indentation of honeycomb sandwich composite panels created by the impact loading.

  • Steel corrosion induces structural deterioration of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), and any potential extreme action on a corroded CFST would pose a severe threat. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation on the lateral impact behaviour of CFSTs suffering from localised pitting corrosion damage. A refined finite element analysis model is developed for the simulation of locally corroded CFSTs subjected to lateral impact loads, which takes into account the strain rate effects on concrete and steel materials as well as the random nature of corrosion pits, i.e., the distribution patterns and the geometric characteristics. Full-range nonlinear analysis on the lateral impact behaviour in terms of loading and deforming time-history relations, nonlinear material stresses, composite actions, and energy dissipations are presented for CFSTs with no corrosion, uniform corrosion and pitting corrosion, respectively. Localised pitting corrosion is found to pose a more severe deterioration on the lateral impact behaviour of CFSTs due to the plastic deformation concentration, the weakened confinement and the reduction in energy absorption capacity of the steel tube. An extended parametric study is then carried out to identify the influence of the key parameters on the lateral impact behaviour of CFSTs with localised pitting corrosion. Finally, simplified design methods considering the features of pitting corrosion are proposed to predict the dynamic flexural capacity of locally pitted CFSTs subjected to lateral impact loads, and reasonable accuracy is obtained.

  • In this paper, a generalized guidance law with an arbitrary pair of guidance coefficients for impact angle control is proposed. Under the assumptions of a stationary target and a lag-free missile with constant speed, necessary conditions for the guidance coefficients to satisfy the required terminal constraints are obtained by deriving an explicit closed-form solution. Moreover, optimality of the generalized impact-angle control guidance law is discussed. By solving an inverse optimal control problem for the guidance law, it is found that the generalized guidance law can minimize a certain quadratic performance index. Finally, analytic solutions of the generalized guidance law for a first-order lag system are investigated. By solving a third-order linear time-varying ordinary differential equation, the blowing-up phenomenon of the guidance loop as the missile approaches the target is mathematically proved. Moreover, it is found that terminal misses due to the system lag are expressed in terms of the guidance coefficients, homing geometry, and the ratio of time-to-go to system time constant.

  • Study of terrestrial impact craters is important not only in the field of the solar system formation and evolution but also of the Galactic astronomy. The terrestrial impact cratering record recently has been examined, providing short- and intermediate-term periodicities, such as, ${\sim}26$ Myrs, ${\sim}37$ Myrs. The existence of such a periodicity has an implication in the Galactic dynamics, since the terrestrial impact cratering is usually interpreted as a result of the environmental variation during solar orbiting in the Galactic plane. The aim of this paper is to search for a long-term periodicity with a novel method since no attempt has been made so far in searching a long-term periodicity in this research field in spite of its great importance. We apply the cepstrum analysis method to the terrestrial impact cratering record for the first time. As a result of the analysis we have found noticeable peaks in the Fourier power spectrum appear ing at periods of ${\sim}300$ Myrs and ${\sim}100$ Myrs, which seem in a simple resonance with the revolution period of the Sun around the Galactic center. Finally we briefly discuss its implications and suggest theoretical study be pursued to explain such a long-term periodicity.

  • The nonlinear numerical analysis of the impact response of reinforced concrete/mortar beam incorporated with the updated Lagrangian method, namely the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is carried out in this study. The analysis includes the simulation of the effects of high mass low velocity impact load falling on beam structures. Three material models to describe the localized failure of structural elements are: (1) linear pressure-sensitive yield criteria (Drucker-Prager type) in the pre-peak regime for the concrete/mortar meanwhile, the shear strain energy criterion (Von Mises) is applied for the steel reinforcement (2) nonlinear hardening law by means of modified linear Drucker-Prager envelope by employing the plane cap surface to simulate the irreversible plastic behavior of concrete/mortar (3) implementation of linear and nonlinear softening in tension and compression regions, respectively, to express the complex behavior of concrete material during short time loading condition. Validation upon existing experimental test results is conducted, from which the impact behavior of concrete beams are best described using the SPH model adopting an average velocity and erosion algorithm, where instability in terms of numerical fragmentation is reduced considerably.

  • Researches using time reversal acoustics (TRA) for impact localization have been paid attention to recently. Dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves, which restrict the utility of classical nondestructive evaluation based on time-of-flight information, can be compensated through the application of TRA to Lamb waves on a plate. This study investigates the spatial focusing performance of time reversal Lamb waves on a plate using finite element analysis. In particular, the virtual sensor effect caused by multiple wave reflections at the boundaries of the plate is shown to enable the spatial focusing of Lamb waves though a very small number of surface-bonded piezoelectric (PZT) sensors are available. The time window size of forward response signals, are normalized with respect to the number of virtual active sensors. Then their effects on the spatial focusing performance of Lamb waves are investigated.
