  • By enabling musicians to freely control the elements involved in sound production and tone generation with a variety of timbre, synthesizers have revolutionized and permanently changed music since the 1960s. Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer, a masterpiece of video art maestro Nam June Paik, is a prominent example of re-interpretation of this new musical instrument in the realm of video and audio. This article examines Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer as an innovative instrument to play videos from the perspective of audiovisual art, and establishes its aesthetic value and significance through both artistic and technical analysis. The instrument, which embodied the concept of image sampling and real-time interactive video as an image-based multi-channel music production tool, contributed to establishing a new relationship between sound and image within the realm of audiovisual art. The fact that his video synthesizer not only adds image to sound, but also presents a complete fusion of image and sound as an image instrument with musical characteristics, becomes highly meaningful in this age of synesthesia.

  • It is presumable that properly designed earcons given simultaneously with visual information could enhance the situation awareness of operators when they are involving in highly complicate process control activities. In this study, population stereotypes of earcons with respect to process control information were identified using 60 Korean subjects. To do this, 11 most distinctive earcons were selected from various earcons having different pitch, rhythm, and timbre. Associations between the selected earcons and 40 pairs of adjectives used to describe the state of control in process were gathered from 37 subjects using a semantic differential method. Based on the results from multivariate analyses, the 40 pairs of adjectives were aggregated into three distinctive semantic dimensions. The emotional maps of the 11 earcons matched with the semantic dimensions were presented in this study. On the basis of these results, a general guideline was suggested for designing earcons to deliver process control information.

  • This study analyzed the timbral characteristics of Pliri by basis step for the sound synthesis for Piri, Korean traditional musical Instrument. By analyzing this material, we can find out three characteristics about the study of the spectrum analysis for the sound synthesis of Piri. First, compared the timbral characteristics of Piri with Oboe through the spectrum analysis, Second, analyzed the timbral characteristics by the sound occurrence process through the time zone analysis of the attack part of the sound started. Finally, analyzed the special characteristics of the vibrato that is important role of musical instrument performance. As a result, the timbral characteristics of Piri is that the volume of the high harmonics was appeared to be high unlike the general classical instrument and the noise quantity rapidly decreased in the sound attack part but the volume value of harmonics increased. And also vibrato that is performance technique is changed pitch and amplitude at the same time by contrast with the general classical instrument. Thus, the timbral characteristic of Piri by the harmonics and the timbre change by the attack part which is sound occurrence process and the change of the pitch and amplitude in the vibrato is characteristic that represented unique quality of Piri. We expect that this achievement can be applied to sound synthesis.

  • This paper proposes a sinusoidal modeling of polyphonic audio signals. Sinusoidal modeling which has been applied well to speech and monophonic signals cannot be applied directly to polyphonic signals because a window size for sinusoidal analysis cannot be determined over the entire signal. In addition, for high quality synthesized signal transient parts like attacks should be preserved which determines timbre of musical instrument. In this paper, a multiresolution filter bank is designed which splits the input signal into six octave-spaced subbands without aliasing and sinusoidal modeling is applied to each subband signal. To alleviate smearing of transients in sinusoidal modeling a dynamic segmentation method is applied to subbands which determines the analysis-synthesis frame size adaptively to fit time-frequency characteristics of the subband signal. The improved dynamic segmentation is proposed which shows better performance about transients and reduced computation. For various polyphonic audio signals the result of simulation shows the suggested sinusoidal modeling can model polyphonic audio signals without loss of perceptual quality.

  • Since 1964, research and improvement projects on Gugak instruments have been carried out to modernize, standardize, and scientificize them, but their inherent problems of Gugak instruments have failed to produce significant results. It seems that one of the main reasons for this is that the study of instrumental acoustics on Korean traditional instruments was not preceded. In Gugak orchestra, Sogeum used in concertos and solo music is a musical instrument that plays the similar role in Western orchestras due to its clear tone and high sound range. In this paper, the sound colors of Sogeum and flute, which sound similar, were analyzed through the their harmonics distribution and sound structures of the instruments. This showed that the overall tone was richer and softer than Sogeum, and that the tones of the two instruments sounded similar due to the similar composition of harmonics. In the future, it is hoped that musical instrument acoustical researches on various Gugak instruments will continue to help popularize and globalize Gugak instruments.

  • As is commonly said, music is 'language of emotions.' It is because sound is a plentiful modality to communicate the human sensibility information. However, most researches of auditory displays were focused on improving efficiency on user's performance data such as performance time and accuracy. Recently, many of researchers in auditory displays acknowledge that individual preference and sensible satisfaction may be a more important factor than the performance data. On this ground, in the present study we constructed the sound sensibility dimensions ('Pleasure', 'Complexity', and 'Activity') and systematically examined the attributes of sound on the sensibility dimensions and analyzed the meanings. As a result, sound sensibility dimensions depended on each sound attributes , and some sound attributes interact with one another. Consequently, the results of the present study will provide the useful possibilities of applying the affective influence in the field of auditory displays needing the applications of the sensibility information according to the sound attributes.

  • This study was to investigate the influence of using Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP) in uninvolved hand function for children with spastic cerebral palsy. Participants were recruited from a welfare center for people with cerebral palsy(CP). Ages ranged from 11 to 12, and a total of 15 TIMP sessions were provided for 3 weeks. Hand function tests were used including Jebsen Hand Function Test for hand function, Box and Block Test for dexterity of uninvolved hand, and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) evaluation for velocity of fingers. The TIMP program consisted of hand percussion playing and keyboard playing with changes of timbre and tempo. While the scores of Jebsen test and Box and Block test were improved for all participants, outcomes of MIDI analysis showed differences among participants. Overall, hand function improvements were observed after the completion of using the TIMP program, and the results implies that the TIMP program can be applied in upper extremity rehabilitation for children with CP.

  • In this paper, we first looked at the structures and characteristics of the musical instrument to study the tone of haegeum, which is the only Korean musical instrument made using all the eight ingredients that make gugak instruments, and which is now the most frequently used in fusion gugak or pop music production sites. In addition, for the comparison of the various tones of the haegeum, under the same conditions, we analized how the haegeum's tone changes according to the types of Wonsan, which works as the bridge of the haegeum. Four Wonsan made of Park, Rosewood, Maple and Black Dan were used in the experiment, and low, medium, and high notes were recorded to compare the inner and outter open strings and the sound ranges. By doing so, we looked at the composition of frequency characteristics and the distribution and analyzed the timbres according to the types of Wonsan. Based on this study, it is expected to help the performers in the field choose the proper Wonsan according to each harmony part, rather than just to their tastes when performing Gugak orchestral music or haegeum ensemble. We also look forward to playing haegeum and using the timbres in various combinations of Wonsan that suit the genres at the pop music industry.
