The goal of this study was to find the optimum lamina size from red pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) logs for the cross laminated timber (CLT) production. From visual inspection of the logs from two species, red pine log showed a larger knot and warp compared to the Japanese cedar. Different cross-sectional sizes of lamina ($110mm{\times}30mm$, $110mm{\times}40mm$, $110mm{\times}50mm$, $50mm{\times}30mm$, $30mm{\times}30mm$) from two species were analyzed for yield and grade. Regardless of the species, the optimized cross sectional size for maximizing the yield was $110mm{\times}30mm$. In grading for the different size laminas from Japanese cedar and red pine, a higher percentage of the first and second grade was found from the $110mm{\times}30mm$ lamina cut.
This study aims to examine the cutting traces remaining on the bracket tie beams of Sungnyemun gate, identifying the tools employed during the late Goryeo to early Joseon periods by specific processes, and deliberating on the timber shaping techniques utilized in advanced architectural construction during the late Goryeo to early Joseon eras. Through the research, it was confirmed that in the production of Sungnyemun Gate's bracket tie beams during the 14th to 15th centuries, both the timber splitting and ripsawing methods were used in conjunction. Moreover, the wood finishing process revealed the use of a plane. It can be inferred that the characteristics of the plane used during that time were not significantly different from those observed in the later period of the Joseon dynasty. The ripsawing and plane finishing techniques were evident in various parts of the bracket tie beams of Sungnyemun gate across the reigns of king Taejo and Sejong, indicating that the techniques involving ripsaw and plane were already prevalent in the late Goryeo period. Consequently, it can be inferred that the ripsawing and plane finishing techniques might have been applied in the construction of prominent government buildings in Hanyang(Seoul), including Gyeongbokgung Palace, and in the residences of royalty and nobility after the establishment of the Joseon dynasty.

The goal of this study was to predict lamina yield from logs of different diameter for production of cross laminated timber. Log characteristics of red pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), including diameter, length, volume, and defects were used for statistical and geometrical analyses, along with the lamina characteristics, including width, thickness, and defects. Based on the data obtained, the strong factors influencing the yield and grade of lamina from the two species were statistically evaluated. A geometrical approach was used for analysis of the yield from logs of given diameters. Statistical analysis showed that lamina yield was dependent on target lamina size but the grade of lamina was not related to any of the log characteristics. The suggested yield equations from the geometrical approach indicated an accuracy of less than 20% difference.

Forest timber production potential of any site is oftentimes measured quantitatively by site index, which is defined as dominant height of a particular stand at a specified age. A site index was developed for estimating site quality of monoculture Pinus caribaea plantations in southwestern Nigeria using a base age of 25 years. Dominant height data were collected from 60 Temporary Sample Plots (TSPs) of $20{\times}20m$ in plantations of 15 to 37 years. Linear and non-linear models as been widely applied in quantitative forest measurements were fitted to dominant height-age data and the best site index equation is : $SI=Exp^{(InHd-23.495(A^{-2}-0.04)}$. The site index curves constructed for the three sites (Omo Forest Reserve - OFR (J4), Oluwa Forest Reserve - OLFR and Shasha Forest Reserve - SFR) across the southwestern Nigeria using the chosen equation revealed that a 15 year old Pinus caribaea in the study area attained average dominant heights of 25, 22 and 21 m in OFR (J4), OLFR and SFR respectively. The site index equation and curves proffer veritable insight into better silvicultural options and management practices for the future plantations suitable sites.
In order to compare and analyze the international competitiveness of Non-Timber Forest Products, the analyses of Revealed Comparative Advantage, Market Comparative Advantage, and Constant Market Share were performed in this study. From the result of data analysis from 2002 to 2006, most of items lost the international competitiveness. In the case of chestnut, however, the RCA and MCA indices recently has decreased, but still shows the competitiveness. As a Non-Timber Forest Products show a weak international competitiveness, Import is expected to increased according to the pending FTA and DDA negotiations of Korea/China. Therefore, In order to elevate the international competitiveness, reinforcement of policy support to durable technical development is required to lower the production cost and to heighten the added value.
The marketing system of non-timber forest products has been criticized as it mainly depends upon private local dealers, having too many steps between producers and consumers, we believe, which makes it less efficient. Meanwhile, there were only a few empirical studies of how they are delivered to consumers. In order to devise and implement targeted forest policies efficiently, it is quite necessary to understand the distribution channel of them. We analyzed the distribution channel of chestnut, bitter persimmon, oak mushroom, and wild greens by data analysis, field and phone survey, and then drew an implication for improving the marketing system. First of all, the number of middle step has to be reduced and the direct transaction has to be expended. In addition, we need to have more active involvement of Forest cooperative in production sites, adding values by processing, and the upgrade of current marketing centers of non-timber forest products, which have been launched since 2004 by Korea Forest Service.

Wood veneer-bamboo zephyr composite board (WBCB) was manufactured to evaluate the properties of bamboo as alternative raw materials for the manufacture of composite panels. Bamboo zephyr was prepared using Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubesens Mazel. et Z), Giant timber bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. et Zucc), and Hachiku bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra var. henosos Stapf). The effect of age and species of bamboo on zephyr production was investigated in terms of the pass number of bamboo split through the rollers, and the width increasing rate of bamboo split. Five-ply WBCBs were produced with Keruing veneers as face and back layers, leading to three layers of bamboo zephyr sheets as core layer. Each layer was placed so that its grain direction was at right angles to that of the adjacent layer and the layers were bonded together with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. The pass number of bamboo split was increased with an increase of the thickness of culm wall. At the same thickness, Moso bamboo showed no effect of the age of bamboo on the pass number. The pass number of split of Giant timber bamboo was lower than that of Moso bamboo. No significant effect of bamboo species and age on the width of zephyr produced was observed. The width of zephyr obtained could be expressed as a function of diameter multiplied by thickness of culm wall. The physical and mechanical properties of WBCB manufactured in all given conditions did not show any significant differences, and they were above the requirement of Korean Standard (KS).

The purpose of this study was to estimate the optimal stand density criteria for each growth stage of Chamaecyparis obtusa (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl. to achieve the timber production goal for cypress forests and develop an optimal silvicultural system for forest thinning. A relative yield index (Ry) value of 0.75, presented as a stand density management criterion index, was estimated by analyzing the relationship characteristics between the composition ratio and stand density of slender trees from 216 sample plots of the recruited cypress forests. The analysis of the feasibility of achieving each production target in the existing silvicultural system for C. obtusa revealed that the growth rate according to the parameters of forest land productivity, such as site index and thinning intensity according to the increase in age, was not properly reflected. In the thinning system for each timber production target analyzed in this study, 353 high-quality large hardwoods from 498.1 m3/ha, 703 high-quality medium hardwoods from 376.2 m3/ha, and 1,758 small-diameter hardwoods from 249.5 m3/ha could be harvested. Although the silvicultural system prepared on the basis of the results of this study cannot be uniformly applied according to various management goals, this study is meaningful in that it presents empirical reference standards based on the stand density management diagram that reflects the growth characteristics of cypress forests in South Korea.
Nowadays, market demand of structural Glulam is growing and diversifying. The durability of Glulam should be significantly considered when they are intended to apply for out-door use such as timber bridge and pergola. This study was aimed to develop the manufacturing process of preservative treated structural Glulam using domestic softwood species. 10 m long structural Glulam were manufactured from domestic pitch pine logs with CuAz-3 preservative treatment. At each manufacturing process, the production yield was evaluated. Finally, bending tests were performed to verify the structural performance of manufactured Glulam. From the results, it was shown that the preservative treatment process hardly influenced on the production yield. But domestic pitch pine was proved to not be suitable for making the preservative treated Glulam due to the large difference of preservative permeability between sapwood and heartwood.

In this study, linear programming was applied to a case study in Gwangreung Experimental Forest of Korea Forest Research Institute investigating the effect of the desired future conditions on forest management. Considering the social, economic and ecological demands of people from the forest, the forest functions were classified into four including natural conservation, timber production, water yield and scenic conservation. The forest land areas were divided into four-types of forest functional zones and forest management prescriptions including the desired future conditions by the forest function type were established. The Model II linear programming was used in optimizing the forest management planning. The model includes management policies, as the constraints, for non-declining yield, allowable cutting area, allowable % age class distribution and allowable % species allocation as well as the land and other accounting regimes. Maximization of timber production was used the objective function. Based on the Model II formulations, the effects of the desired future conditions by the forest function type on forest management planning were investigated in terms of timber production, net present value and stand structures over time.
