  • It is well-known fact that tidal difference between the ebb and flow in Yellow Sea is about 9 m so that it has largest value in the world. This wide range of tide level enables Yellow Sea water to intrude into main stream of Han River. However, the study of the tidal reach of Han River has not been carried out thoroughly since North and South Koreas share this region so that topography data and physical measurement are lacking. In this study, to examine the reverse flow and dispersion behavior by tidal effect at the tidal reach of Han River, 2-D river analysis models were applied. RMA-2 was applied to calculate the horizontal velocities and water surface elevation. With the results of velocities and water depth, RAM4, which is 2-D advection-dispersion model based on FEM was simulated to analyze the horizontal transport behavior of BOD.

  • This study analyzes contaminant movement under transient flow in a rubble mound revetment offshore waste landfill barrier system that prevents contaminant runoff. The barrier system consists of bottom layer and side barrier. For the bottom layer system, impermeable clay layer is used. For the side barrier system, the HDPE barrier sheet (primary element) plays the main role, and the intermediate protection layer (supplementary element) is responsible for the barrier. Seepage, advection, dispersion numerical analysis was carried out using SEEP / W and CTRAN / W programs. As a result, under abnormal conditions considering the fluctuation in tidal range, the volume and direction of the flow velocity vector of the pore water change with time and the dispersion concentration of the contaminant changes. When comparing the case of 2 m tidal range and 8 m tidal range, the larger the tide value, the higher the concentration of contaminant under abnormal conditions. It was found that the rate of change of the concentration of the contaminant changed depending on the change in the tidal range, and as a result, the outflow of the pollutant was smaller than that in the steady flow state.

  • The characteristics for pollutant transport in tidal influenced area was investigated using tidal wave hydraulic scale model. Hydraulic scale model was composed of the tidal generator, attenuation area and channel. Also, wave height, current meter and conductivity meter were used with the measured instruments in hydraulic scale model. NaCl with a tracer was used to evaluate the advection phenomena under the different velocity profiles. The arrival time of the maximum concentration in the condition of the relatively fast velocity was measured about 30 seconds faster than ones in the conditions of low velocity. The measured concentrations of the tracer were shown in the detection points of the flow direction consecutively.

  • A mathematical model has been developed to evaluate the capability of sea water exchanges under tidal and diffusive environments and has been verified through comparison with numerical experiments. From the mathematical analysis, this study presents the rates of sea water exchanges due to the tidal inflow and diffusion process. The port characteristic length $L_p$ is the most significant evaluation index.

  • We calculated using siltation model to know the influnce of the tidal current, the tidal level, the sediment transport of seabed around sea area due to the construction of the Song do New city. We calculated the tidal current and based on this we estimated scour, sedimentation using the advection-diffusion equation and accessed the sediment transport of seabed before and after the construction of the New city. Sedimentation was increased in the east coast of Young jong Do, and Scour was increased according to the direction from the front route of north harbor to Ho do. Tidal level was increased overall.

  • Environmental impact on a land reclamation project, Hwaong tidal barrier was studied using the dispersion and advection model to predict the influence of polluted water discharged from freshwater reservior. The simulation results show that the distribution of concentration by influence of polluted water discharged during a tidal cycle appeared to be extinguished at atmost all points after two tidal cycle. Peak concentration near the sluice gate is found out to be higher during the spring tide than neap tide. Equi-concentration contour line appeared to distributed a longer according to line of sea dike in spring tide than neap tide. The reasons is because influence by currents of northwest direction is a stronger, compared to spring tide and neap tide in the flood tide.

  • The detailed structure of a tidal front and its ebb-to flood variation in the main tidal channel of the Kyunggi Bay in the mid-west coast of Korea were investigated by analyzing CTD data and drifter trajectories collected in late July 1999. A typical tidal front was formed in water about 60 m deep at the mouth of the channel. Isotherms and isohalines in the upper layer above the seasonal pycnocline in the offshore stratified zone inclined upward to the sea surface to form a surface front, while those in the lower layer declined to the bottom front. The location of the front is consistent with $100 S^3/cm^2$ of the mixing index H/U defined by Simpson and Hunter (1974), where H is the water depth and U is the amplitude of tidal current. The potential energy anomaly in the frontal zone varied at an ebb-to flood tidal cycle, showing a minimum at slack water after ebb but a maximum at slack water after flood. This ebb-to flood variation in potential energy anomaly is not accounted for by the mixing index. We conclude that on- and offshore displacement of the water column by tidal advection is responsible for the ebb-to-flood variation in the frontal zone.

  • To examine the structure and distribution of the Keum River plume produced by continuous river discharge we carried out three-dimensional numerical model experiments with or without Coriolis force and tide. When Coriolis force is included but tide is not the model plume forms the clockwise circulation north of southern channel in the developing stage. As the plume expansion progresses the center of circulation moves to the southwest, with fuming the discharging axis of low-salinity water to the southwest from the mouth of southern channel. These results are explained mainly in terms of barotropic geostrophy by surface slope maintained with accumulated low-salinity(buoyant) water in front of the estuary mouth due to of offshore strong salinity front. When the M$_2$ tide is included the model plume extends farther to the northwest, forming large tongue-like salinity distribution. The tidally averaged surface flows of the offshore plume are mainly in geostrophic balance. These changes in plume distribution are explained in terms of low-salinity water advection by tidal excursion and active tidal mixing; the former supplies low salinity water to the north off the estuary mouth and the later increases mean sea level along the plume and surface salinity in northern shallow coastal area. The main features of observed Keum River plume(Lee et al., 1999; Choi et al., 1999), which showed the northwestward deflection of the plume axis and northward deepening of the plume thickness from the estuary mouth region, are well reproduced by the model in which tide is included.

  • Analyses of tidal observations and a numerical model of the $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides in the Uldolmok waterway located at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula are described. This waterway is well known fer its strong tidal flows of up to more than 10 knots at the narrowest part of the channel. Harmonic analysis of the observed water level at five tidal stations reveals dramatic changes in the amplitude and phase of the shallow water constituents at the station near the narrowest part, while survey results show a decreasing trend in local mean sea levels toward the narrow section. It was also observed that the amplitudes of semi-diurnal constituents, $M_2$ and $S_2$ are diminishing toward the narrowest part of the waterway. Two-dimensional numerical modeling shows that the $M_2$ energy flux is dominated by the component coming from the eastern boundary. The $M_2$ energy is inward from both open boundaries and is transported toward the narrow region of the channel, where it is frictionally dissipated or transferred to other constituents due to a strong non-linear advection effect. It is also shown that the $M_4$ generation is strong around the narrow region, and the abrupt decrease in the M4 amplitude in the region is due to a cancellation of the locally generated M4 with the component propagated from open boundaries. The superposition of both propagated and generated M4 contributions also explains the discontinuity of the M4 phase lag in the region. The tide-induced residual sea level change and the regeneration effect of the $M_2$ tide through interaction with $M_4$ are also examined.

  • A horizontal 2-D model which includes the wetting-drying treatment technique in the intertidal zone is established for the prediction of tidal changes and contaminant transport due to the development of Incheon coastal zone. The flow model is verified by the measurement data at Jeong-Do, and then the computed values are closely matched to the observed water elevations and velocities of main-flow direction. And then, the tidal change patterns are simulated using this model before and after the construction of the Youngjongdo New Airport and Shihwa Seadike. In the spring tide condition, pollutants transport pattern is also simulated for the arbitrary pollutants loads. By the analysis of this numerical simulation results, the velocities after development are decreased, and discharged pollutants are mainly transported by the advection along a narrow deep trough. Thus, this model can be used as the compatible prediction model for the tidal change and pollutant transport due to the development plan of Incheon coastal zone.
