  • Minor mergers leave behind long lived, but extremely faint and extended tidal features including tails, streams, loops and plumes. These act as a fossil record for the host galaxy's past interactions, allowing us to infer recent accretion histories and place constraints on the properties and nature of a galaxy's dark matter halo. However, shallow imaging or small homogeneous samples of past surveys have resulted in weak observational constraints on the role of galaxy mergers and interactions in galaxy assembly. The Rubin Observatory, which is optimised to deliver fast, wide field-of-view imaging, will enable deep and unbiased observations over the 18,000 square degrees of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), resulting in samples of potentially of millions of objects undergoing tidal interactions. Using realistic mock images produced with state-of-the-art cosmological simulations we perform a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the extended diffuse light around galaxies and galaxy groups down to low stellar mass densities. We consider the nature, frequency and visibility of tidal features and debris across a range of environments and stellar masses as well as their reliability as an indicator of galaxy accretion histories. We consider how observational biases such as projection effects, the point-spread-function and survey depth may effect the proper characterisation and measurement of tidal features, finding that LSST will be capable of recovering much of the flux found in the outskirts of L* galaxies at redshifts beyond local volume. In our simulated sample, tidal features are ubiquitous In L* galaxies and remain common even at significantly lower masses (M*>10^10 Msun). The fraction of stellar mass found in tidal features increases towards higher masses, rising to 5-10% for the most massive objects in our sample (M*~10^11.5 Msun). Such objects frequently exhibit many distinct tidal features often with complex morphologies, becoming increasingly numerous with increased depth. The interpretation and characterisation of such features can vary significantly with orientation and imaging depth. Our findings demonstrate the importance of accounting for the biases that arise from projection effects and surface-brightness limits and suggest that, even after the LSST is complete, much of the discovery space in low surface-brightness Universe will remain to be explored.

  • Tidal power generation plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It uses a tidal force generated by gravitational force between the moon, the earth, and the sun. The change of seawater height generates the tide-generating force, and the magnitude of the change is the tide level. The tide level change has the same period as the tide-generating force twice a day, every 29.5 days, every year, and every 18.6 years. Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station is Korea's first tidal power plant that began commercial power generation in August 2011 and has been accumulating a large volume of data on electricity production, power generation sales, sluice displacement, and tide levels. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the impact of the inefficiency factors affecting production and the tidal level change on tidal power generation and their characteristics using Sihwa Lake Tidal Power's operational performance data. Throughout this paper we show that tidal power generating operation is accurately predicting the trends of magnitude of tidal force to be periodical for each day. determining the drop to initiate the water turbine generator factoring the constraints on the operation of Sihwa Lake, and reflecting the water discharge through the floodgate and water turbine during the standby mode in the power generation plan to be in the optimal condition until the initiation of the next power generation can maximize power generation.

  • Extra-tidal feature of the globular clusters such as tidal tails and halos can be a crucial evidence of the merging scenario of the Galaxy formation in the dynamical point of view. To search for such an extra-tidal feature of globular clusters located in the Galactic bulge(RGC<3kpc), we obtained wide-field near-infrared JHKs images of 6 metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-1.0) clusters and 3 metal-rich ([Fe/H]>-1.0) clusters. Observations were carried out using IRSF 1.4m telescope and SIRIUS near-infrared camera, during 2006~2007. The obtained images have a total maximum field-of-view of ~ $21'\times 21'$. To select clusters' member stars and minimize the field star contaminations, we applied CMD masking algorithm. Smoothed surface density contour maps with selected stars for each cluster show overdensity features around the tidal radius and beyond. Also, radial surface density profiles within the tidal radius of the clusters show an overdensity feature as a change of slope of the radial profile. The results add further observational constraints of the formation of the Galactic bulge.

  • The proposed offshore wind farm projects, i.e., Mooudo offshore, Yeonggwang-Gochang offshore, Saemangeum offshore, Imjado offshore and Gadeokdo-Dadeapo offshore, were compared and analyzed using the Korea National Wind Mapand Wind Farm Suitability Assessment System developed by the Korea Institute of Energy Research. The suitability of the proposed areas was comprehensively assessed using geographic, economic constraints, wave condition and wind resource factors, but the focus of this paper was on the geographic constraints and wave conditions. Imjado had several geographical constraints, despite having a good wind power density, while Saemangeum had a relatively low wave height, shallow water depth, close substation and slow tidal current. It is anticipating that the present comparison and analysis could be used as reference guidelines when selecting and preparing the design of large-scale offshore wind farm in the near future.

  • Over the last decade, deep studies of nearby galaxies have led to the discovery of vast stellar envelopes that are often rich in substructure. These components are naturally predicted in models of hierarchical galaxy assembly, and their observed properties place important constraints on the amount, nature, and history of satellite accretion. One of the most effective ways of mapping the peripheral regions of galaxies is through resolved star studies. Using wide-field cameras equipped to 8 m class telescopes, it has recently become possible to extend these studies to systems beyond the Local Group. Located at a distance of 3.6 Mpc, M81 is a prime target for wide-field mapping of its resolved stellar content. In this talk, we present the detailed results from our deep wide-field imaging survey of the M81 group with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), on the Subaru Telescope. We report on the analysis of the structures, stellar populations, and metallicities of old dwarf galaxies such as NGC3077, IKN, KDG061, as well as young stellar systems such as Arp's Loop and Holmberg IX. Several candidates for yet-undiscovered faint dwarf galaxies and young stellar clumps in the M81 group will also be introduced. The peculiar galaxy NGC3077 has been classified as the irregular galaxy. Okamoto et al. (2015, ApJ 809, L1) discovered an extended halo structure with S-shape elongated tails, obvious feature of tidal interaction. With a help of numerical simulation by Penarrubia et al. (2009, ApJ 698, 222), we will demonstrate that this tidal feature was formed during the latest close encounters between M81, M82, and NGC 3077, which induced star formation in tidally stripped gas far from the main bodies of galaxies. It is not clear whether the latest tidal interaction was the first close encounters of three galaxies. If NGC3077 is still surrounded by the dark matter halo, it implies that NGC3077 has undergone the first tidal stripping by larger companions. Kinematic studies of inter galactic globular clusters and planetary nebulae would tell us the past history of tidal interaction in this group of galaxies.

  • We have investigated the spatial configuration of stars within the tidal radius of metal poor globular cluster NGC 6626 in the bulge direction. Data were obtained in near-IR J,H,Ks bands with wide-field ($20'\times20'$) detector, WIRCam at CFHT. To trace the stellar density around target cluster, we sorted cluster's member stars by using a mask filtering algorithm and weighting the stars on the color-magnitude diagram. From the weighted surface density map, we found that the stellar spatial distributions within the tidal radius appear asymmetric and distorted features. Especially, we found that more prominent over-density features are extending toward the direction of Galactic plane rather than toward the directions of the Galactic center and its orbital motion. This orientation of the stellar density distribution can be interpreted with result of disk-shock effect of the Galaxy that the cluster had been experienced. Indeed, this over-density feature are well represented in the radial surface density profile for different angular sections. As one of the metal poor globular clusters with extended horizontal branch (EHB) in the bulge direction, NGC 6626 is kinematically decoupled from the normal clusters and known to have disk motion of peculiar motion. Thus, our result will be able to add further constraints to understand the origin of this cluster and the formation of bulge region in early universe.

  • This is a review paper, assessing progress reported in a Special Issue (Prandle and Lane, 2000) of Coastal Engineering focusing on simulation of SPM in the North Sea, against issues over a diverse range of shelf seas and their coastal margins. The broad objectives of reproducing the characteristics of sediment fluxes off an open coast and relating these to tidal and wave forcing were achieved. However, accurate computation of these fluxes remains sensitive to largely empirical coefficients used in determining erosion and deposition rates. Bed roughness strongly influences both these coefficients and the associated near-bed current magnitudes (including wave impact thereon). Bed roughness can change significantly over a tidal cycle and dramatically over seasons or in the course of a major event. Accurate simulation of sediment fluxes on a day-to-day basis is constrained by dependency on the initial distribution of mobile sediments. The latter depends on rates and locations of original sources and the time history of preceding events. Remote sensing via aircraft could provide data for assimilation into such models to circumvent these constraints. The approaches described here can be readily applied to other coastal regions to indicate the likely distributions and pathways of known sediment sources. However quantitative simulations will require an associated observational programme. A subsequent stage is to understand the evolving balance between the forecasted sediment movement - the resulting morphological adjustments and thence modifications to the prevailing tidal current and wave regimes.

  • Limited quantity and non-uniform distribution of fossil fuel over the world, along with the environmental concerns of increasing $CO_2$ emissions, indicate that gradual and planned switchover to the sustainable energy sources is the need of the day. Ocean energy is well-distributed over the coasts, abundant, renewable and available in the form of wave energy, tidal energy and thermal energy. India has gathered precious experience from the pilot plants utilizing these methods over the last few years. One of the main constraints is deemed to be the grid connectivity. Time has come to transform this limitation into opportunity. Ocean power can be a very suitable option for the coastal belts and the islands. Implementation of this concept would require large-scale industry participation along with favourable government policies in the coming years. This article attempts a review of the ocean energy initiatives in India and proposes a roadmap for the future.
