  • An investigation of the influence of $WO_3$ and $V_2O_5$ catalysts on the microstructure, phase formation and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) efficiency of the synthesized SCR powders has been carried out. A commercial anatase-$TiO_2$ was used as the catalysts support. For $WO_3(10wt%)/TiO_2$, the W loading to the $TiO_2$ support led to the lower in anatase to rutile transition temperature from $1200^{\circ}C$ of $TiO_2$ support to ${\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The transition temperature was also lowered to below $650^{\circ}C$ in the $V_2O_5$(5 and 10 wt%) added composition. The $WO_3(10wt%)/TiO_2$ SCR powder obtained at $450^{\circ}C$ showed near 100% of $NO_x$ conversion efficiency at $350{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and for the powder prepared at $650^{\circ}C$ the same efficiency was achieved in wider temperature range $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The highest $NO_x$ conversion efficiency of 100% was obtained in the $V_2O_5(5wt%)/TiO_2$ SCR composition calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ in the relatively wider temperature range $250{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, while the catalytic efficiency considerably decreased for the $V_2O_5(10wt%)/TiO_2$. The lowered conversion efficiency of $NO_x$ observed in the $V_2O_5(10wt%)/TiO_2$ composition calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ was considered to be correlated with the lowered surface area resulting from the increased crystallite growth by highly reactive vanadium loading.

  • Barium Titanate(BaTiO$_3$) nanoparticles were prepared at 22$0^{\circ}C$ through glycothermal process by using barium hydroxide and amorphous titanium hydrous gel as precursor and 1,4-butanediol and distilled water as solvent. It is demonstrated that the size of BaTiO$_3$ particles can be controlled by reaction conditions such as various content of 1,4-butanediol/distilled water volume ratio. This processing method can fabricate BaTiO$_3$ powders, which have a narrow distribution and exhibit good dispersion. The particle size of BaTiO$_3$ powders obtained by glycothermal process were about 50 nm to 200 nm on the condition that reaction temperature was 22$0^{\circ}C$ and holding time was 24 h.

  • $TiO_2$ nanopowder has been synthesized by means of the flame method using a precursor of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP, Ti$(OC_3H_7)_4)$. In order to clarify the effect of cooling rate of hot flame on the formation of $TiO_2$ crystalline phases, the flame was controlled by varying the mixing ratio and the flow rate of gases. Anatase phase was predominantly synthesized under the condition having the steep cooling gradient in flame, while a slow cooling gradient enabled to form almost rutile $TiO_2$ nanopowder of above 95%.

  • Extremely fine $TiO_2$ powders were synthesized from titanium chloride by the precipitation and freeze drying method. The phase transformation and electrical conductivity were investigated as a function of temperature. X-ray analysis showed that the phase transformation of the synthesized powder from the anatase to rutile occured at 64$0^{\circ}C$ and finished at 92$0^{\circ}C$ due to small particle size and large specific surface area. The activation energy obtained from electrical conductivity vs. temperature was about 1.63eV. This relatively large value was due to porosity in the specimen.

  • In this study, the colloidal stability and sedimentation behavior of crystalline $TiO_2$ particles (300nm) in various organic solvents have been investigated by means of a backscattered light flux profile (Turbiscan). The backscattered light flux profiles revealed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were readily sedimented in water, methyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol due to a flocculation-induced particle growth, while a particle coalescence and a sedimentation of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were hardly observed in isopropyl alcohol. The migration velocities of the $TiO_2$ particle were measured as around 6.15/min, 12.53 m/min, 6.51m/min, and 0.18m/min for water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol, respectively, showing a remarkably slow migration of the $TiO_2$ particles in isopropyl alcohol.

  • The porous sensing materials for BaTiO$_3$ gas sensors were fabricated by adding the graphite powders. The crystalline structure and microstructure of the porous BaTiO$_3$-based ceramics were studied. All the sintered bodies showed a tetragonal perovskite structure. The porosity increased with increasing graphite contents. This is mainly due to an enhanced evolution of CO and $CO_2$ gases resulting from the exothermic reactions of graphite and oxygen during the sintering. It was found that the discrepancy in the resistivities measured in air and CO atmospheres at high temperatures (>∼20$0^{\circ}C$) became remarkable with increasing temperature. The sensitivity of CO gas increased with porosity, since the reactions between CO gas and $O_2$$^{[-10]}$ and between CO gas and $O^{[-10]}$ are active due to the formation of many reaction sites. The porous BaTiO$_3$-based ceramics could be promising as a sensing material for CO gas sensors.

  • Photocatalytic properties of $TiO_2$ nanopowders has been received much attention due to their high potentials for environmental applications such as remediation of polluted environments. The $TiO_2$ nanopowders doped with metal or non-metal elements have been synthesized by variety methods such as flame method, chemical vapor synthesis, sol-gel, ion implantation, which affect a doping behavior in different ways resulting in different surface characteristics, leading to different photocatalytic activity. In addition to an effect of synthesis methods, the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ nanopowders can be improved by subsequent heat-treatments. In this study, to obtain a highly efficient photocatalyst, we synthesized $TiO_2$ nanopowders doped with tungsten by the chemical vapor synthesis method (CVS) and determined their physical properties and photocatalytic activity, together with subsequent post-treatment in the range of $300^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • Nano-oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) superalloys have attracted attention because of their outstanding mechanical reinforcement mechanism. Dispersed oxides increase the material's strength by preventing grain growth and recrystallization, as well as increasing creep resistance. In this research, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was applied to synthesize an ODS alloy. It is useful to coat conformal thin films even on complex matrix shapes, such as nanorods or powders. We coated an Nb-Si-based superalloy with TiO2 thin film by using rotary-reactor type thermal ALD. TiO2 was grown by controlling the deposition recipe, reactor temperature, N2 flow rate, and rotor speed. We could confirm the formation of uniform TiO2 film on the surface of the superalloy. This process was successfully applied to the synthesis of an ODS alloy, which could be a new field of ALD applications.
