  • The preparations of deodorizing fibers using $TiO_2$ have been investigated. The fibers were coated with $TiO_2$ for the purpose of deodorizing by dipping fibers into the $TiO_2$ sol solutions and calcined at $450^\circ{C}$, $500^\circ{C}$ and $750^\circ{C}$ for 1 h after coating. The surface structure of the coated fibers was studied with XRD on the different preparation conditions of calcination temperatures. The deodorizing function of the prepared fibers was studied by the determination of the decomposing capability for $NH_3,\;CH_3SH\;and\;CH_3CHO$. The deodorant activity(D.A.) of these deodoriBing fibers was measured by chromogenic gas detector tubes. The deodorizing effect of the prepared fibers were shown to be similar for the three model compounds; 5wt% $TiO_2$ sol solution calcined at $450^\circ{C}$ < 5 wt% $TiO_2$ sol solution calcined at $500^\circ{C}$< 5 wt% TiO$_2$ sol solution calcined at $750^\circ{C}$.

  • Forming mechanism of fibrous TiC during self-propagating high temperature synthetic reaction was analyzed and suggested. It was revealed that critical temperature for the stable fiber formation was not the melting point of TiC, but the eutectic reaction temperature of TiC and C. Minimum amount of TiC diluent addition required to form fibers was calculated to be 25.6%, which was consistent with the experimental result. Synthesized fibers were found hollow tube-like. The morphology was explained by the diffusion rates of C and Ti in TiC, and by the molar volume chnage of C during the reaction. Expanding shell model was suggested for the hollow fiber formation mechanism.

  • Potassium tetratitanate (K2Ti4O9) and Potassium hexatitanate (K2Ti6O13) fibers have been prepared by the slow-cooling calcination process in a temperature range from 125$0^{\circ}C$ to 95$0^{\circ}C$ using the K2CO3 and TiO2 as the starting materials. Optimum fiber growth conditions have been also investigated by changing the physical parameters, such as calcination time and temperature, and cooling rate. Relatively long K2Ti4O9 fibers ( 1.2mm) have been grown with quite a high aspect ratio (c/a 500)when the starting material with a nominal composition of K2O and TiO2 with 1:4 was calcined at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h, and then was slowly cooled to 95$0^{\circ}C$ with a rate of 2$0^{\circ}C$/h. In case of a K2O.6TiO2 composition, acicular shaped K2Ti6O13 fibers with 20~300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ long and low aspect ratio (c/a 10~15) have been formed irrespective of the coolign rate. The growth condition of fibers have been discussed based upon the phase diagram of K2O-TiOa2.

  • In this study, $TiO_2$-Activated carbon (AC) complex fibers were prepared by electrospinning for the synergetic effect of adsorption and degradation of organic pollutant. The average diameter of these fibers increased with increasing the amount of AC added, except for 1AC-TOF (AC$/TiO_2$ =1/40 mass ratio). After calcinations at $500^{\circ}C$, long as-spun fibers were broken and their average diameter was slightly decreased. The resultant fibers after calcination had rough surface and sphere shapes like a peanut. From XRD results, it was confirmed that as-spun fibers were changed to anatase $Ti_O2$ fiber after calcinations at $500^{\circ}C$. The prepared $TiO_2$-AC complex fibers could remove procian blue dyes by solar light irradiation with high removal property of 94~99%. The PB dye was rapidly removed by adsorption during the initial 5 minutes. But after 5 minutes, dye removal was occurred by photodegradation. In this study, the most efficient AC/$TiO_2$ ratio of $TiO_2$-AC complex fibers was 5/40, showing the synergetic effect of adsorption and photodegradation. It is expected that the $TiO_2$-AC complex fibers can be used to remove of organic pollutants in water system.

  • Ruthenium(Ru)-doped $TiO_2$ nanofibers were prepared using electrospun Ru-$TiO_2$/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) fibers and subsequent annealing for 1 h at temperatures in the range of $500^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. The properties of the Ru-$TiO_2$ fibers were characterized as a function of the Ru content and calcination temperature using X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetry with differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and viscometer, pycnometer and dynamic tensiometer measurements. Although the diameter of the fiber decreased slightly with increasing calcination temperature, no dramatic changes were observed with respect to the ruthenium content. The XRD and FT-IR results revealed that anatase phase and ruthenium metal began to be formed after calcination at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Anatase and rutile phases and ruthenium metal coexisted in the fibers calcined above $600^{\circ}C$. No anatase phase was detected in the fibers containing ruthenium when they were calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$. The morphology of the fibers changed from smooth and uniform to porous with increasing temperature. The experimental results suggest that the calcination temperature and Ru content were influential in determining the morphology and structure of the fibers.

  • In this study, cotton fabrics were coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(3-MPTMS), which is highly reactive to cotton fabrics, as a medium, and the characteristics, antimicrobial properties, and photodegradation properties of the fibers were measured. The manufacturing process is as follows. (1) 3-MPTMS was added to isopropanol, and $TiO_2$ colloid was added to the mixture to prepare a solution. (2) Cellulose fibers were immersed in the prepared $3-MPTMS/TiO_2$ solution, stirred for 90 minutes at $45^{\circ}C$ in a constant temperature water bath, and dried thereafter. In order to identify the morphology of the cellulose fibers coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles, the surface was observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM), and SEM-EDS was measured to identify the adhesion of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The SEM images showed $TiO_2$ nanoparticle and 3-MPTMS coated layers on the fibers and it was identified that $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were attached to the cellulose fibers. The antimicrobial activity of $3-MPTMS/TiO_2$-treated cotton fabrics was measured using a bacterial reduction method. $3-MPTMS/TiO_2$ cellulose fibers which was irradiated by ultra violet light, showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli(ATCC 43895) and Staphylococcus aureus(ATCCBAA-1707) unlike unirradiated fibers. The cellulose fibers were stained with methylene blue and the photodegradation performance of the stained fabrics was analyzed. The stained fabrics showed high degradation performance with photolytic reactions of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles.

  • $Al_2O_3$-TiC composites were prepared from aluminum, titanium oxide, and carbon fibers by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS). After the SHS reaction, the TiC phase in the sample was found either fibrous or non-fibrous shape. The fraction of the fibrous TiC phase varied with the amount of $Al_2O_3$ diluent addition. The optimum amount of diluent to make fibrous carbide was determined to be 30%. The fibers were hollow inside and made of multiple grains with a composition of titanium carbide. The hollow fiber formation mechanism was suggested and discussed. The synthesized powders were consolidated to dense composites by hot pressing at $1750^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa.

  • $(1-x)SiO_2-(x)TiO_2$ composite fibers with various compositions of $TiO_2$ were prepared by electrospinning their sol-gel precursors of titanium (IV) iso-propoxide (TiP), and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The surface morphology and structure of sintered composite fibers were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). As the content of $TiO_2$ in $(1-x)SiO_2-(x)TiO_2$ system was increased the average diameter of composite fibers was proportionally increased. Also, the transformation of $TiO_2$ from anatase to rutile form was inhibited by the highly dispersed $TiO_2$ around $SiO_2$ particles up to $0.6SiO_2-0.4TiO_2$ composite fibers even after calcination at $1000^{\circ}C$. The photocatalytic activity of $SiO_2-TiO_2$ composite fibers was examined for the methylene blue (MB) decomposition which was confirmed using UV-vis/DRS spectra. The experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully photodegraded using $SiO_2-TiO_2$ composite nanofibers under UV-visible light irradiation.

  • Dense composites of titanium matrix and Al2O3 matrix with reinforcements of carbon or titanium carbide fibers were successfully fabricated by high-pressure self-combustion sintering method or combustion reacton under 30 MPa of uniaxial pressure with an aid of external heating in vaccum. It was found that the fibers were uniformly distributed in the matrix, and aligned in a phase perpendicular to the pressure axis. As a moel ratio of Ti/C or reaction time increased, the density of Ti-matrix composite increased Micro pores around fibers could be removed by using clean carbon fibers without sizing agent on their surface. The evolution of carbide fibers from carbon fibers was observed. The composition of the various phases around fibers were analyzed.
