  • Hydroxyapatite(HA) was spray-coated to alloy substrate(Ti-6Al-4V) using plasma-spray process for bioceramic application The coating morphology composition and crystallinity were influenced by following process parameters ; stand-off distance spray power level and auxiliary gas pressure. These parameters have been systematically varied in the present study to evaluate their relative influence on the coating qual-ity and to seek an optimum spraying condition. Amorphicity and decomposition of HA increased with stand-off distance and the imperfect coating layer was obtained at the short stant-off distance (55mm). The cry-stallinity of HA coating decreased with spray power level and auxiliary gas pressure but the bond strength between the HA coated layer and Ti alloy substrate increased with the spray power level.

  • The $\beta$ phase Ti-Nb-Sn-HA bio materials were successfully fabricated by high energy mechanical milling and pulse current activated sintering (PCAS). Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy has been widely used as biomaterial. But the Al has been inducing Alzheimer disease and V is classified as toxic element. In this study, ultra fine sized Ti-Nb-Sn-HA powder was produced by high energy mechanical milling machine. The $\beta$ phase Ti-Nb-Sn-HA powders were obtained after 12hr milling from $\alpha$ phase. And ultra fine grain sized Ti-Nb-Sn-HA composites could be fabricated using PCAS without grain growth. After sintering, the microstructures and phase-transformation of Ti-Nb-Sn-HA biomaterials were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The relative density was obtained by Archimedes principle and the hardness was measured by Vickers hardness tester. The $\beta$-Ti phase was obtained after 12h milling. As result of hardness and relative density, 12h milled Ti-Nb-Sn-HA composite has the highest values.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the corrosion behaviors of dental implant alloy after microsized surface modification in electrolytes containing Mn ion. Materials and Methods: $Mn-TiO_2$ coatings were prepared on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy for dental implants using a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method carried out in electrolytes containing different concentrations of Mn, namely, 0%, 5%, and 20%. Potentiodynamic method was employed to examine the corrosion behaviors, and the alternatingcurrent (AC) impedance behaviors were examined in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5^{\circ}C{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ using a potentiostat and an electrochemical impedance spectroscope. The potentiodynamic test was performed with a scanning rate of $1.667mV\;s^{-1}$ from -1,500 to 2,000 mV. A frequency range of $10^{-1}$ to $10^5Hz$ was used for the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The amplitude of the AC signal was 10 mV, and 5 points per decade were used. The morphology and structure of the samples were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and thin-film X-ray diffraction. The elemental analysis was performed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Result: The PEO-treated surface exhibited an irregular pore shape, and the pore size and number of the pores increased with an increase in the Mn concentration. For the PEO-treated surface, a higher corrosion current density ($I_{corr}$) and a lower corrosion potential ($E_{corr}$) was obtained as compared to that of the bulk surface. However, the current density in the passive regions ($I_{pass}$) was found to be more stable for the PEO-treated surface than that of the bulk surface. As the Mn concentration increased, the capacitance values of the outer porous layer and the barrier layer decreased, and the polarization resistance of the barrier layers increased. In the case of the Mn/Ca-P coatings, the corroded surface was found to be covered with corrosion products. Conclusion: It is confirmed that corrosion resistance and polarization resistance of PEO-treated alloy increased as Mn content increased, and PEO-treated surface showed lower current density in the passive region.

  • Titanium and its alloys have been widely using in the various field of industry application due to high corrosion resistant properties and mechanical properties. Titanium is highly reactive in the high temperature state and the formation of titanium oxide and porosities in the nuggets of fusion welding will results in the degradation of the mechanical properties. For this reason the studies of friction stir welding for titanium have been investigated recently. The FSW zones of titanium were classified by the weld nugget (WN), the linear transition boundary (TB) and the heat affected zone (HAZ). The WN along with titanium parent was characterized by the presence of twins and dislocations. The average grain size and hardness of WN has been changed according to heat input. The grain refinement resulted from the FSW increased the hardness in the stir zone. Sound dissimilar joints between SUS 304 and CP-Ti were achieved using an advancing speed of 50 mm/min and rotation speeds in the range of 700-1100 rpm. Aluminum 1060 and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V plates were lap joined by friction stir welding, hence the ultimate tensile shear strength of joint reached 100% of Al 1060. Mg alloy and Ti were successfully butt joined by inserting a probe into the Mg alloy plate with slightly offsetting. But Ti-Al intermetallic compound layers formed at the interface of these joints.

  • The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. This paper was described the influence of phase changes of Ti-Nb alloys on mechanical properties. Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type),Ti-20wt.%Nb($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. The specimens were homogenized at 1050$^{\circ}C$ for 24hr and were then hot rolled to 50% reduction. Each alloys were solution heat treated at $\beta$ zone and $\alpha+\beta$ zone after homogenization and then were aged. The mechanical properties of Ti alloys were analysed by hardness test, tensile test, elongation test and SEM test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) The higher hardness value of $\alpha+\beta$type alloy was obtained compared to the, $\alpha,\beta$type alloys. 2) The aged treated showed better hardness compared to the solution heat treated, homogenized. 3) In the case of solution and aging treatment at $\beta$region, the $\alpha+\beta$type alloy showed the most highest tensile strength and $\beta$type alloy showed the best elongation.

  • Titanium, which has excellent strength and toughness characteristics, is increasingly used in the aerospace field. Among the titanium alloys used for body parts, more than 80 % are Ti-6Al-4V alloys with a tensile strength of 931 MPa. The spark plasma sintering (SPS) method is used for solidification molding of powder manufactured by the mechanical milling (MM) method, by sintering at low temperature for a short time. This sintering method avoids coarsening of the fine crystal grains or dispersed particles of the MM powder. To improve the mechanical properties of pure titanium without adding alloying elements, stearic acid was added to pure titanium powder as a process control agent (PCA), and MM treatment was performed. The properties of the MM powder and SPS material produced by solidifying the powder were investigated by hardness measurement, X-ray diffraction, density measurement and structure observation. The processing deformation of the pure titanium powder depends on the amount of stearic acid added and the MM treatment time. TiN was also generated in powder treated by MM 8 h with 0.50 g of added stearic acid, and the hardness of the powder was higher than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy when treated with MM for 8 h. When the MM-treated powder was solidified in the SPS equipment, TiC was formed by the solid phase reaction. The SPS material prepared as a powder treated with MM 8 h by adding 0.50 g of stearic acid also formed TiN and exhibited the highest hardness of Hv1253.

  • This study explores the profound impact of varying oxygen content on microstructural and mechanical properties in specimens HO and LO. The higher oxygen concentration in specimen HO is found to significantly influence alpha lath sizes, resulting in a size of 0.5-1 ㎛, contrasting with the 1-1.5 ㎛ size observed in specimen LO. Pore fraction, governed by oxygen concentration, is high in specimen HO, registering a value of 0.11%, whereas specimen LO exhibits a lower pore fraction (0.02%). Varied pore types in each specimen further underscore the role of oxygen concentration in shaping microstructural morphology. Despite these microstructural variations, the average hardness remains consistent at ~370 HV. This study emphasizes the pivotal role of oxygen content in influencing microstructural features, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between elemental composition and material properties.

  • The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used as an implant material due to its higher fatigue strength and strengthto-weight ratio compared to pure titanium, excellent corrosion resistance, and bone-like properties that promote osseointegration. For rapid osseointegration, the adhesion between the titanium surface and cellular biomolecules is crucial because adhesion, morphology, function, and proliferation are influenced by surface characteristics. Polymeric peptides and similar coating technologies have limited effectiveness, prompting a demand for alternative materials. There is growing interest in 2D nanomaterials, such as MoS2, for good corrosion resistance and antibacterial, and bioactive properties. However, to coat MoS2 thin films onto titanium, typically a low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis method is required, resulting in the synthesis of films with a toxic 1T@2H crystalline structure. In this study, through high-temperature annealing, we transformed them into a non-toxic 2H structure. The implant coating technique proposed in this study has good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties.
