  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the wear tracks of TiN coated silicon wafer on friction and wear characteristics were investigated. Silicon wafer was used for the substrate of coated disk specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with $1{\mu}m$ in coating thickness. AISI 52100 steel ball was used for the counterpart. The tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the wear track and in nitrogen to avoid oxidation. This paper reports characterization of the oxide layer effects on friction and wear characteristics using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and sliding tests.

  • $Ti_{0.26}Al_{0.16}Si_{0.01}N_{0.57}$ (at%) coatings were synthesized on stainless steel 304 by using arc ion plating systems (AIPS). Targets employed for the deposition were Ti, AlSi(67:33at%) and AlSi(82:18at%). The thickness of TiAlSiN coatings is $4{\mu}m$. The oxidation characteristics of the deposited coatings were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in air between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 75 hr. The oxide scale formed on the TiAlSiN coatings consisted of $rutile-TiO_2$ layer and ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. At $800^{\circ}C$, the coatings oxidized relatively slowly, and the scales were thin and adherent. When oxidized above $900^{\circ}C$, $TiO_2$ grew fast over the mixed oxide layer, and the oxide scale formed on TiAlSiN coatings was prone to spallation. Microstructural changes of the TiAlSiN coatings that occurred during high temperature oxidation were investigated by EPMA, XRD, SEM and TEM.

  • This study investigated variations of micro-structures and mechanical properties of Ti / STS321L joint with various bonding temperature and time using brazing method. According to increasing bonding temperature and time, it was observed that the thickness of their reaction layer increased due So increasing diffusion rate and time. From the EPMA results, Ti diffused to the STS321L substrate according to increasing bending time to 30min. Hardness of bonded interface increased with increasing bonding temperature and time due to increasing their oxides and intermetallic compounds. XRD data indicated that Ag, Ag-Ti intermetallic compounds, TiAg and Ti₃Ag and titanium oxide, TiO₂were formed in interface. In tensile test, it was found that the tensile strength had a maximum value at the bonding temperature of 900℃ and time of 5min, and tensile strength decreased over bonding time of 5min. The critical thickness of intermetallic compounds was observed to about 30㎛, because of brittleness from their excessive intermetallic compounds and titanium oxide, and weakness from void.

  • (Ti, Al)N films were deposited on 304 stainless steel sheet by D.C. magnetron sputtering using Al target and Ti plate. The high temperature oxidation of (T, Al)N films with the variation of composition has been investigated. The chemical composition of (Ti, Al)N films with the variation of composition has been investigated. The chemical composition of (Ti, Al)N films was similar to the sputter area ratio of titanium to aluminum target by means of EDS and AES survey. The high temperature oxidation test of (Ti, Al)N showed that (Ti, Al)N has better high temperature resistance than TiN and TiC films. TiC films were cracked at 40$0^{\circ}C$ in air TiN films quickly were oxidised at $600^{\circ}C$, were spalled more than $700^{\circ}C$. But (Ti, Al)N films are relatively stable to$ 900^{\circ}C$. The good resistance to high temperature oxida-tion of (Ti, Al)N films are due to the formation of dense Al2O3 and TiO2 oxide layer. Especially, Al2O3 oxide layer is more important. The results obtained from this study show, it is believe that the (Ti, Al)N film by D.C. magnetron sputtering is promising for the use of high temperature and wear resistance mate-rials.

  • To improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel and Fe, the adherence between fIlm and substarte and the corrosion resistance to ceramic fIlm ($TiO_2$ and $ZrO_2$), coated by RF magnetron sputtering, were studied. The adherence index (X) was determined by the measure of micro - hardness test. Also, the corrosion resistance on oxide coatings was studied using electrochemical measurement. The main results obtained are as the following: 1) In the micro - hardness test, with 1J.UI1 thickness fIlm, it has only one the value of X. Above 2J.UI1 thickness fIlm, however, get another value ofX as the cracks in fIlm. 2) The adhensivity of titania ($TiO_2$) coated fIlm is superior to that of zirconia ($ZrO_2$) coated fIlm. 3) All oxide fIlm used adhere well on the mild materials such as pure steel than high intensity materials like stainless steel. 4) The corrosion resistance of zirconia coated materials was improved compared to titania coated materials.

  • Recently, much of the current development in surface modification engineering are focused on multilayered coatings. Multilayered coatings have the potential to improve the tribological properties. Four different multilayered coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel. The prepared samples are designed as $WC-Ti_{0.6}Al_{0.4}N$, $WC-Ti_{0.53}Al_{0.47}N$, $WC-Ti_{0.5}Al_{0.5}N$ and $WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$. The multilayered coatings were investigated with respect to coating surface and cross-sectional morphology, roughness, adhesion, hardness, porosity and tribological behavior. Especially, wear tests of four multilayered coatings were performed by using a ball-on-disc configuration with a linear sliding speed of 0.017 m/sec, 5.38 N load. The tests were carried out at room temperature in air by employing AISI 52100 steel ball ($H_R=66$) having a diameter of 10 mm. The surface morphology, and topography of the wear scars of samples and balls have been determined by using scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). Results have showed an improved wear resistance of the $WC-Ti_{1-x}Al_xN$ coatings with increasing of Al concentration. $WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$ coating with the lower surface roughness and porosity with good adhesion enhanced wear resistance.

  • The development of colored surface on zinc coating by the oxidation of a melten alloy of zinc with a minor amount of oxygen-avid additive such as tianium has been studied. Using a galvanizing Zinc alloy containing 0.1 to 0.3wt%Ti, gold, purple or blue color was developed clearly and stably, depending upon the extent of oxidation, by air cooling after hot dipping in a bath at temperature of $550^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. The source of the color is light interference with surface oxide layer. THe final color depends on the thickness of the color depends on the thickness of $TiO_2$, played So compositing, temperature and time at elevated temperature after are all controlling variables. Since oxidation film such as $TiO_2$ played role of passivation film, the corrosion resistance in a colored galvanized steel sheet. It is also thought that surface oxide layer of $TiO_2$ inhibited dissolution of the coating layer.

  • The effects of process parameters substrate such as substrate current and substrate temperature on the corrosion resistance of ion plated TiN film were investigated. TiN fims were deposited on speed steel on which Ti or Ni hed been previously evaporated. Dense TiN films could be obtained under higher substrate current(1A) and substrate temperature($500^{\circ}C$), whereas TiN films deposited with lower substances current(0.5A) and substrate temperature($300^{\circ}C$) showed porous structure. The corrosion resistances of high speed steel was considerably increased when dense TiN films had been formed on it. The effect of Ti and Ni interlayer on the increase of the corrosion resistance was also significant with dense TiN films, while there was little effect of interlayer on the corrosion resistance when TiN films were porous. the effect of interlayer on the corrosion resistance was more outstanding with Ti then with Ni, because Ti reacts more easily with oxygen to form an oxide layer, and it also shows higher resistance against chlorine containing corrosion media.
