In biomedical implants and dental fields, titanium has been widely utilized for excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. However, Ti and its alloys are nonbioactive after being implanted in bone. In this study, for the purpose of improvement in biocompatibility the anodic $TiO_2$ layer on Ti-xNb alloys were fabricated by electrochemical method in phosphate solution, and the effect of Nb content on the pore size, the morphology and crystallinity of Ti oxide layer formed by the anodic oxidation method was investigated. The Ti containing Nb up to 3 wt%, 20 wt% and 40 wt% were melted by using a vacuum furnace. The sample were cut, polished, and homogenized for 24 hr at $1050^{\circ}C$ for surface roughness test and anodizing. Titanium anodic layer was formed on the specimen surface in an electrolytic solution of 1 M phosphoric acid at constant current densities ($30mA/cm^2$) by anodizing method. Microstructural morphology, crystallinity, composition, and surface roughness of oxide layer were observed by FE-SEM, XRD, EDS, and roughness tester, respectively. The structure of alloy was changed from $\alpha$-phase to $\beta$-phase with increase of Nb content. From XRD results, the structure of $TiO_2$ formed on the Ti-xNb surface was anatase, and no peaks of $Nb_2O_5$ or other Nb oxide were detected suggesting that Nb atoms are dispersed in $TiO_2$-based solid solution. Surface roughness test and SEM results, pore size formed on surface and surface roughness decreased as Nb content increased. From the line analysis results, intensity of Ti peak was high in the center of pore, whereas, intensity of O peak was high in the outside of pore center.
Shape Memory Alloys have attracted the interest of a great number of researchers in the world, and Mexico is not the exception. Research in this field started ten years ago, and is actually an active line covering the classical Cu-based and Ti-Ni alloys, but also the new Fe-based alloys. Although more basic studies have been performed at the present time, interest for applied research and technological goals is increasing. In this work we present a series of studies carried on these Shape Memory Alloys by the groups in Mexico, and explain what the interest of our groups are in the next future in this are of the Materials Science. Interdisciplinary work has been necessary in the characterization of the different alloys, and multiple techniques have been used, like Mossbauer spectroscopy, thermoelectric power, electron microscopy, ultrasound techniques, neutron and x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, among others. Collaboration With other groups in Europe and in the United States have become highly useful and productive, and some examples of such activities are also reported.
Hydrogen and hydrogen energy have been recognized as clean energy sources and high energy carrier. Mg and Mg alloys are attractive hydrogen storage materials because of their lightweight and low cost materials with high hydrogen capacity (about 7.6 wt.%). However, the commercial applications of the Mg hydrides are currently hinder by its high absorption/desorption temperature, and very slow reaction kinetics. However, Ti and Ti based hydrogen storage alloys have been thought to be the third generation of alloys with a high hydrogen capacity, which makes it difficult to handle because of high reactivity. One of the most methods to develope kinetics was addition of transition metal. Therefore, Mg-Ti-Cr-Nb alloy was fabricated to add TiCrNb by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. TiCrNb systems have included transition metals, low operating temperatures and hydrogen storage materials. As-received specimens were characterized using X-ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermo Gravimetric analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG/DSC). $Mg-TiCr_{10}Nb$ systems were evaluated for hydrogen kinetics by Sievert's type Pressure-Composition-Isotherm (PCI) equipment. The operating temperature range was 473, 523, 573 and 623 K.
Statement of problem: Despite of the recent development of the titanium casting system methods, the casting defects such as imperfect casting and internal porosity were frequently observed. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to compare and measure the castability, microhardness, and surface reaction between Grade 2 pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V by casting these alloys from the different sprue design conditions. Material and methods: Depending on the sprue designs and titanium alloys, 42 ready-made wax patterns were used. By analyzing the remodeling of the cast, internal porosity, microhardness, and titanium surface layer of SEM, there were several results we observed. Results: 1. The measured castability of titanium were categorized in the ascending order: individual sprue group, runner bar group, and single group. This data are based on the statistically signigicant differences. 2. The castability of titanium has not showed the statistically significant differences among the alloys. However, CP-Ti groups were superior to Ti-6Al-4V groups by showing the noticeable castability. 3. The surface layers of the castings of all groups have showed $5{\mu}m$ titanium oxide layers irrespective of sprue designs and titanium alloys. Conclusion: From the above study results, by fabricating the restorations from the centrifugal casting machine direct sprue designs revealed better castability. As we increased the number of sprues in the wax pattern, it revealed better castability. The castability of pure titanium rather than that of Ti-6Al-4V was remarkable. To fabricate the complex forms of the restorations, further researches on the efficient sprue designs and titanium alloys must be made.
In this study, the electrochemical properties of CP-Ti (commercially pure titanium) and Ti-64 (Ti-6Al-4V) were evaluated and the effect of hydrofluoric acid on corrosion resistance and electrochemical properties was elucidated. Additive manufactured materials were made by DMT (Directed Metal Tooling) method. Samples were heat-treated for 1 hour at $760^{\circ}C$ and then air cooled. Surface morphologies were studied by optical microscope and SEM. Electrochemical properties were evaluated by anodic polarization method and AC-impedance measurement. The oxide film formed on the surface was analyzed using an XPS. The addition of HF led to an increase in the passive current density and critical current density and decreased the polarization resistance regardless of the alloys employed. Based on the composition of the oxide film, the compositional difference observed by the addition of HF was little, regardless of the nature of alloys. The Warburg impedance obtained by AC-impedance measurement indicates the dissolution of the constituents of CP-Ti and Ti-64 through a porous oxide film.
The Zr-based $AB_2$ type Laves phase hydrogen storage alloys have some promising properties, long cycle life, high discharge capacity, as electrode materials in reversible metal hydride batteries. However, when these alloys are used as negative electrode for battery, there is a problem that their rate capabilities are worse than those of commercialized $AB_5$ type hydrogen storage alloys. In this work, we tried to develop the Zr-based $AB_2$ type Laves phase hydrogen storage alloys which have high capacity and, especially, high rate capability.
Model experiment was introduced to obtain the formation of a core/rim structure by only liquid phase reaction in Ti(C, N)-based cermet alloys. Infiltrated Ti(C, N)-Ni, $MO_2C-Ni$, and TaC-Ni cermets were bonded to sandwiched specimen by heat treatment $1450^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. With nitrogen addition, both (Ti, Mo) (C, N) and (Ti, Ta) (C, N) rim structure was nucleated around comer of cuboidal Ti(C, N) core. However, equilibrium shapes of(Ti, Mo) (C, N) and (Ti, Ta) (C, N) rim were different possibly due to the effect of interface energy. The core/rim and rim! binder interfaces were parallel to each other with TaC addition, while rotated to each other with $MO_2C$ addition.
The effect of oxygen on the shape memory characteristics in Ti-18Nb-6Zr-XO (X = 0-1.5 at%) biomedical alloys was investigated by tensile tests. The alloys were fabricated by an arc melting method at Ar atmosphere. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.45 mm with a reduction up to 95% in thickness. After severe cold-rolling, the plate was solution-treated at 1173 K for 1.8 ks. The fracture stress of the solution-treated specimens increased from 450 Mpa to 880 MPa with an increasing oxygen content up to 1.5%. The fracture stress increased by 287MPa with 1 at% increase of oxygen content. The critical stress for slip increased from 430 MPa to 695 MPa with an increasing oxygen content up to 1.5 at%. The maximum recovery strain of 4.1% was obtained in the Ti-18Nb-6Zr-0.5O (at%) alloy. The martensitic transformation temperature decreased by 140 K with a 1.0 at% increase in O content, which is lower than that of Ti-22Nb-(0-2.0)O (at%) by 20 K. This may have been caused by the effect of the addition of Zr. This study confirmed that addition of oxygen to the Ti-Nb-Zr alloy increases the critical stress for slip due to solid solution hardening without being detrimental to the maximum recovery strain.
Ti-based bulk metallic glasses with high glass forming ability were developed through a systematic alloy design technique. The main alloy design strategy was the selection of alloying elements that may not be toxic in the human body. The $Ti_{45.0}Cu_{40.1}Zr_{12.7}Si_{2.2}$ alloy could be cast into an amorphous rod with the diameter of 3 mm by a suction casting technique using Cu mold. The compressive strength of the amorphous rod was measured as 1826 MPa. Since the Ti-based amorphous alloys consist of non-toxic elements, they can be widely used as bio-materials and eco-materials with unique and beneficial properties.
The popularity of Ni-Cr-Mo based metal alloys for metal-ceramic crown have increased recently because of low price, superior yield strength and rigidity. the use of these alloys give them the potential advantage of thinner copping with the required rigidity for long span bridges. The purpose of this study was to assess the microstructures and mechanical properties of Ni-Cr-Mo-(Si,Al,Nb,Zr,Ti.Cu,Mm) based Alloys not containing beryllium(Be) related toxic effects. The abtained results indicated that as-cast these specimen alloys showed compositional and microstructural differences, and mechanical properties values of Ni69Cr20Mo5Si2Al4 alloy among these specimen alloys was found to be superior to those of commercial Ni-Cr based alloy using in market place today.
