  • Titanium Chromium Nitrided (TiCrN) coatings were deposited on stainless steel 316 L and Si (100) wafer by inductively coupled plasma assisted D.C. magnetron sputtering at the various sputtering power on Cr target and $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio. Increasing the sputtering power of Cr target, XRD patterns were changed from TiCrN to nitride $Cr_2Ti$. The maximum hardness was $Hk_{3g}$ 3900 at $0.3\;N_2/Ar$ gas ratio. The thickness of the TiCrN films increased as the Cr target power increased, and it showed over $Hk_{5g}3100$ hardness at 100 W, 150 W. TiCrN films were deposited by the ICP assisted DC magnetron sputtering shown good wear resistance as the $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio was 0.1, 0.3.

  • As technology advances, there is a demand for development of hard solid lubricant coating. (Ti, Cr, Zr)N-$MoS_2$ films were deposited on AISI H13 tool steel substrate by co-deposition of $MoS_2$ with (Ti, Cr, Zr)N using a D.C. magnetron sputtering process. The influence of the $N_2Ar$ gas ratio, the amount of $MoS_2$ in the films and the bias voltage on the mechanical and structural properties of the films were investigated. The highest hardness level was observed at the $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio of 0.3. Hardness of the films did not change much with the increase of the $MoS_2$ content in the films. As the substrate bias potential was increased, hardness level of the film reached maximum at -150 V. Surface morphology of these films indicated that high hardness was attributed to the fine dome structure.

  • Visible-light-responding photocatalysts, $N-TiO_2$, were prepared by nitrogen doping onto $TiO_2$. The crystalline structure and morphology, doping state of the prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and XPS. The activity of the prepared photocatalysts was examined by the decomposition of methyleneblue. The prepared catalysts were anatase type and the crystallinity was increased with pH. The particle sizes of the prepared catalysts were 5.42, 5.99, 7.58 nm at pH 2.2, 4.7, 9.0, respectively. The particle sizes of the prepared catalysts were slightly increased with pH. The activity of the photocatalysts was directly proportional to the crystallinity of the catalysts. $N-TiO_2$ prepared by nitrogen doping onto $TiO_2$ showed activity under visible light. The doped nitrogen was located not in the lattice but on the surface.

  • MOCVD TiN films were prepared from a new TiN precursor, tetrakis(etylmethylamino)titanium (TEMAT) and ammonia. Deposition of TiN films from a single precursor, TEMA T yielded the growth rates of $70 to 1050\AA$/min, depending on the deposition temperature. Furthermore, the excellent bottom coverage of -90% over $0.35\mu\textrm{m}$ contacts was obtained at $275^{\circ}C$. The addition of ammonia to TEMA T lowered the resistivity of as- deposited TiN film to ~ $800\mu\omega-cm$ from $3500~6000\mu\omega-cm$ and improved the stability of TiN film in air. Examination of the films by Auger electron spectroscopy(AES) showed that the oxygen and carbon contents decreased with the addition of ammonia. However, increasing ammonia flow rate decreased the bottom coverage of TiN films over $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$ contacts, probably due to the high sticking coefficient of intermediate species produced from the gas phase reaction of TEMA T and ammonia. Based on the byproduct gases detected by the quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), the transammination reaction was proposed to be responsible for TiN deposition. In addition, XPS analysis revealed that the carbon in the films made from TEMA T and ammonia was metallic carbon, suggesting that $\beta$-hydrogen activation process occurs competitively with the transammination reaction.

  • This paper examines the blood chamber of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) under static loading conditions and standard operating temperatures. The LVAD's walls are made of a temperature-sensitive polymer (ChronoFlex C 55D) and are covered with a titanium nitride (TiN) nano-coating (deposited by laser ablation) to improve their haemocompatibility. A loss of cohesion may be observed near the coating-substrate boundary. Therefore, a micro-scale stress-strain analysis of the multilayered blood chamber was conducted with FE (finite element) code. The multi-scale model included a macro-model of the LVAD's blood chamber and a micro-model of the TiN coating. The theories of non-linear elasticity and elasto-plasticity were applied. The formulated problems were solved with a finite element method. The micro-scale problem was solved for a representative volume element (RVE). This micro-model accounted for the residual stress, a material model of the TiN coating, the stress results under loading pressures, the thickness of the TiN coating and the wave parameters of the TiN surface. The numerical results (displacements and strains) were experimentally validated using digital image correlation (DIC) during static blood pressure deformations. The maximum strain and stress were determined at static pressure steps in a macro-scale FE simulation. The strain and stress were also computed at the same loading conditions in a micro-scale FE simulation.

  • Microstructure and mechanical properties of $(Ti_{1-x}Alx)N$ films, Produced by the the Ion Beam Sputtering(IBS) method, were studied by changing the Ti, Al contents. The compositions of films determined by RBS were $(Ti_{0.75}Al_{0.25})N$, $(Ti_{0.61}Al_{0.39})N$ and $(Ti_{0.5}Al_{0.5})N$, and XPS binding energies of Ti2P, A12p and N1s shifted to higher energies than those of pure Ti, Al and N, which indicated that nitrides were formed. XRD results indicated that the NaCl structure for $$x{\leq_-}0.39$$ changed into amorphous structure at x=0.5. For films with $$x{\leq_-}0.39$$, the lattice parameter decreased in proportion to the Al content. Nanoindentation hardness value were above HV=3300 at Al content up to x=0.39. However, the hardness of films with x=0.5 abruptly decreased to HV=1800, and this lower hardness values were attributed to different crystal structure. Critical load(Lc) in scratch test showed 23N at x=0.25, 22N at x=0.39 and 22N at x=0.5, which indicated that films with different Al contents showed similar adhesion behavior.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibacterial activity and osteoblast-like cell viability according to the ratio of titanium nitride and zirconium nitride coating on commercially pure titanium using an arc ion plating system. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Polished titanium surfaces were used as controls. Surface topography was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and surface roughness was measured using a two-dimensional contact stylus profilometer. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis with the colony-forming unit assay. Cell compatibility, mRNA expression, and morphology related to human osteoblast-like cells (MG-63) on the coated specimens were determined by the XTT assay and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS. The number of S. mutans colonies on the TiN, ZrN and $(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)N$ coated surface decreased significantly compared to those on the non-coated titanium surface (P<0.05). CONCLUSION. The number of P. gingivalis colonies on all surfaces showed no significant differences. TiN, ZrN and $(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)N$ coated titanium showed antibacterial activity against S. mutans related to initial biofilm formation but not P. gingivalis associated with advanced periimplantitis, and did not influence osteoblast-like cell viability.

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy are widely used in chemical and aircraft industries for their good corrosion resistance and high strength to weight ratio. Surface alloying of Ti alloy by $CO_2$ laser is able to produce few hundred micrometers thick TiN surface-alloyed layer with high hardness on the substrate very simplely by injecting reaction gas($N_2$) into a laser-generated melt pool and adjust the hardness to the specific requirements of the individual application by changing of laser processing parameters. This research has been investigated the effect of such parameters on TiN surface-alloying of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by $CO_2$ laser. The maximum hardness of TiN surface-alloyed zone waw obtained by injecting 100% $N_2$ gas and it was decreased as the amount of $N_2$ gas in Ar and $N_2$ gas mixture was decreased. As scanning speed was increased, the hardness and depth of TiN surface-alloyed zone was decreased at constant laser power. The surface hardness after double scanning laser treatment is higher than that of single scanning. At constant laser power, the surface roughness is increased after the surface alloying if laser scanning speed is decreased.
