The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It also has similar characteristics to Ti in inducing bony ingrowth. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb ($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40 wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.

In this study, a thick-film semiconductor odor gas sensor for the detection of $CH_3$SH was developed using SnO$_2$ as the main substrate and was investigated in terms of its sensitivity and reaction time. In the process of manufacturing the sensor, Taguchi's design of experiment (DOE) was applied to analyze the effects of a variety of parameters, including the substrate, the additives and the fabrication conditions, systematically and effectively. Eight trials of experiments could be possible using the 27 orthogonal array for the seven factors and two levels of condition, which originally demands 128 trials of experiments without DOE. The additives of Sb$_2$O$_{5}$ and PdCl$_2$ with the H$_2$PtCl$_{6}$ ㆍ6$H_2O$ catalyst were appeared to be important factors to improve the sensitivity, and CuO, TiO$_2$, V$_2$O$_{5}$ and PdO were less important. In addition, TiO$_2$, V$_2$O$_{5}$ and PdO would improve the reaction time of a sensor, and CuO, Sb$_2$O$_{5}$, PdCl$_2$ and H$_2$PtCl$_{6}$ㆍ6$H_2O$ were negligible. Being evaluated simultaneously in terms of both sensitivity and reaction time, the sensor showed the higher performance with the addition of TiO$_2$ and PdO, but the opposite results with the addition of CuO, V$_2$O$_{5}$, Sb$_2$O$_{5}$ and PdCl$_2$. The amount of additives were superior in the case of 1% than 4%. H$_2$PtCl$_{6}$ㆍ6$H_2O$ would play an important role for the increase of sensor performance as a catalyst.nce as a catalyst.
The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used as an implant material due to its higher fatigue strength and strengthto-weight ratio compared to pure titanium, excellent corrosion resistance, and bone-like properties that promote osseointegration. For rapid osseointegration, the adhesion between the titanium surface and cellular biomolecules is crucial because adhesion, morphology, function, and proliferation are influenced by surface characteristics. Polymeric peptides and similar coating technologies have limited effectiveness, prompting a demand for alternative materials. There is growing interest in 2D nanomaterials, such as MoS2, for good corrosion resistance and antibacterial, and bioactive properties. However, to coat MoS2 thin films onto titanium, typically a low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis method is required, resulting in the synthesis of films with a toxic 1T@2H crystalline structure. In this study, through high-temperature annealing, we transformed them into a non-toxic 2H structure. The implant coating technique proposed in this study has good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties.
Pyrochlore was known as one of the most promising materials for the immobilization of radioactive actinide. This study includes the synthesis, phase relation and characteristics of pyrochlores (CaCeH$f_xTi_{2-x}O_7$=0.2, 0.6, 1.0, 1.4, 1.8, 2.0) in the system of Ca-Ce-Hf-Ti-O. The samples were prepared from high purity of starting materials under the pressure of 400kg/cm$^2$ at room temperature, and were sintered at 1200∼1$600^{\circ}C$ The synthesized samples were analyzed and identified with XRD. The optimal formation conditions of pyrochlores were at 1300∼150$0^{\circ}C$ under $O_2$ atmosphere with batch compositions. During synthesis, pyrochlore, perovskite and $A_{2}BO_{5}$ oxide were formed. The characteristics of this system is that parameter of pyrochlore was increased with the content of hafnium. This phenomenon was due to the difference of ionic size between hafnium and titanium in six coordinated site.
In this study, (Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$ thin films were etched with a magnetically enhanced inductively coupled plasma (MEICP) as a function $CF_4$/Ar gas mixing ratio. Experimental was done by varying the etching parameters such as rf power, dc bias and chamber pressure. The maximum etch rate of the BST films was $1700{\AA}$/min under $CF_4/(CF_4+Ar)$ of 0.1, 600W/350V and 5 mTorr. The selectivity of BST to Pt and PR was 0.6, 0.7, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies shows that there are surface reaction between Ba, Sr, Ti and C, F radicals during the (Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$ etching. To analysis the composition of surface residue remaining after the etching, films etched with different $CF_4$/Ar gas mixing ratio were investigated using XPS.
Mo(Ti) alloy and pure Cu thin films were subsequently deposited on $SiO_2-coated$ Si wafers, resulting in $Cu/Mo(Ti)/SiO_2$ structures. The multi-structures have been annealed in vacuum at $100-600^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to investigate the outdiffusion of Ti to Cu surface. Annealing at high temperature allowed the outdiffusion of Ti from the Mo(Ti) alloy underlayer to the Cu surface and then forming $TiO_2$ on the surface, which protected the Cu surface against $SiH_4+NH_3$ plasma during the deposition of $Si_3N_4$ on Cu. The formation of $TiO_2$ layer on the Cu surface was a strong function of annealing temperature and Ti concentration in Mo(Ti) underlayer. Significant outdiffusion of Ti started to occur at $400^{\circ}C$ when the Ti concentration in Mo(Ti) alloy was higher than 60 at.%. This resulted in the formation of $TiO_2/Cu/Mo(Ti)\;alloy/SiO_2$ structures. We have employed the as-deposited Cu/Mo(Ti) alloy and the $500^{\circ}C-annealed$ Cu/Mo(Ti) alloy as gate electrodes to fabricate TFT devices, and then measured the electrical characteristics. The $500^{\circ}C$ annealed Cu/Mo($Ti{\geq}60at.%$) gate electrode TFT showed the excellent electrical characteristics ($mobility\;=\;0.488\;-\;0.505\;cm^2/Vs$, on/off $ratio\;=\;2{\times}10^5-1.85{\times}10^6$, subthreshold = 0.733.1.13 V/decade), indicating that the use of Ti-rich($Ti{\geq}60at.%$) alloy underlayer effectively passivated the Cu surface as a result of the formation of $TiO_2$ on the Cu grain boundaries.
Invar-type austenitic cast irons are being used as low thermal expansive materials because of its good low thermal expansion characteristics and castability despite its low hardness. The effects of alloying elements such as Cr, Ti, V, and Mo on hardness and linear thermal expansion coefficient of the invar-type austenitic cast irons were investigated. A combined use of V and Mo addition was found to be the most effective for the improvement of hardness without causing an increase in the thermal expansion coefficient. With a combined addition of 4.6wt%V and 3.8wt%Mo, the hardness increased up to 180HB and the thermal expansion coefficient was kept at a relatively low value of $4.6{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range from room to $250^{\circ}C$.
The use of pure titanium and titanium alloys have been increased recently in fixed, removable prosthodontics and implant fields as a framework. But when they were used for superstructures of implant or metal framework of removable prosthesis, welding is necessary to reconnect the fracture site to control the casting distortions. To overcome the difficulties in soldering the titanium due to high oxidation property, much effort have been devoted. In this study, some of mechanical properties were compared between pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy by using after welding, electron beam welding technique and tungsten arc welding. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and microhardness were measured. And, in order to compare the effect of welding site and surrounding metal tissue according to the welding condition, SEM photographs were taken and element distribution was observed by Wave Dispersion Spectroscopy. Through analyses of the data, following results were obtained; 1. In items such as tensile strength, yield strength and elongation according to the welding techniques of pure titanium, only tungsten arc welded group showed significant lower value than other groups(P<0.05). 2. In items such as tensile strength and yield strength according to the welding techniques of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, control group and tungsten arc welded group showed significant difference among all the groups(P<0.05). 3. Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibited significantly greater elongation than control group when the laser welding method and electron beam welding method were used, and elongation showed increasing tendency. 4. Pure titanium specimens exhibited increasing tendency of microhardness regardless of the weld-ing technique applied, and especially tungsten arc welded group demonstrated a great increase of microhardness than parent metal. 5. There was no hardness change in laser welded group and electron beam welded group of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, but in tungsten arc welded group, hardness changed greatly from parent metal to weld seam. 6. Through the metallographic examination and scanning electron microscopy, laser welding caused central fusion and recristallizations were formed and tungsten arc welding caused localized fusion to 0.3-0.7mm from the surface.

$Pb_{0.99}[(Zr_{0.6}Sn_{0.4})_{0.9}Ti_{0.1}]_{0.98}Nb_{0.02}O_3$ (PNZST) thin films were deposited by radio frequency magnetron sputtering on a $(La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5})CoO_3$ (LSCO)/Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate using a PNZST target with an excess PbO of 10 mole%. The thin films deposited at the substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ crystallized to a perovskite phase after rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The thin films, which annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ for 10 seconds in air, exhibited good crystal structures and ferroelectric properties. The remanent polarization and coercive field of the fabricated PNZST capacitor were approximately $20uC/cm^2$ and 50 kV/cm, respectively. The reduction of the polarization after $2.2\;{\times}\;10^9$ switching cycles was less than 10%.
Volcanic ash samples of historical eruptions from Mt. Baekdu were analyzed for major oxides, trace and rare earth elements by a variety of analytical techniques. The results indicate that the ashes consist of approximately 58.8~71.1 wt.% $SiO_2$, 9.6~16.8 wt.% $Al_2O_3$, 4.5~6.9 wt.% $Fe_2O_{3t}$, 0.1~1.7 wt.% MgO, 0.3~1.6 wt.% CaO, 5.2~6.3 wt.% $Na_2O$, 4.3~5.9 wt.% $K_2O$ and less than 1.2 wt.% $TiO_2$. Thirty two trace metals including Ba, Cu, Cr. Co, Ni, Sr, V, Zn, and Zr were analyzed. The ashes can be divided two groups: group A(1 ka Millennium pumice, 1668 and $190{\underline{3}}$ pumice) and group B(1702 pumice) according to the relative enrichment of HREEs. The abundances of heavy metals such as Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn were relatively low. As compared to the Sakurajima volcanic ash, Baekdusan volcanic ash has low concentrations of Y, Nb, Pb, U, Sc, V, Ni and Cu and high concentrations of Zr, Ba, Hf, Cr, Co, Zn and rare-earth (except Eu).
