The study area is located in between Susanri and Hwanggangri where the formations of Okcheon group and Chosun group supposedly come in contact so that the area is structurally very import. Present study reveals that the meta-volcanic rocks distribute from south to north along contact zone of Okcheon and Chosun groups in the center of the area. Meta-volcanic rocks seem to be originated from the andesite or andesitic basalt rocks which was known to be Surchangri formation consist of phyllite and black slate by previous workers. The meta-volcanic rocks intruded along the fault zone one existed between Okcheon and Chosun groups but obliterated at present by the intrusion of volcanic rocks. The fault seems to be overthrust, and one of the positive evidences of thrust fault is the Yamisan nappe structure in Yamisan near Susanri. This interpretation coincides with O.J. Kim's work which states that the Precambrian Okcheon group is largely overturned and thrusted over the Chosun group. The relation between the Surchangri and the Majeonri formation marks facies change. This fact together with northpluging anticlinal structure made it possible that both formation came into contact along direction without fault. Yongam formation is not overlain unconformably used to be believed by previous workers, but interbed in the Great Limestone series of Chosun goup. It is also clarified that the rock formerly designated as limesilicate rock was meta-liparite. The origin of amphibole pebbles in the Kunjasan formation is of primary and secondary ones; the secondary pebbles were formed by metamorphism of the fragments of limestone or dolomite.
By using two methods we obtained plane solutions for 5 groups of earthquakes including 13 events, which occurred in the central region of South Korea after December 1997. The first method is the composite fault plane solution by P wave polarity, and the second the solution by amplitude ratio (SV/P, SH/P, SV/SH) and P and S wave polarities. The two method results show similar results. The strike of fault is in the direction of NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE with the movement of strike-slip or strike-slip including thrust component. The compressional axis of the stress field dominantly trends ENE-WSW or NE-SW. The results are almost consistent with the other main events occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula.
In the study area Uanggunbong-Samgunri area), Precambrian metamorphic complex, (Taebacksan gneiss complex, Hyundong gneiss complex, and Taebacksan schist complex) had undergone three different regional metamorphisms at least before Paleozoic. The Paleozoic sediments in the study area also had undergone three different metamorphisms at least. The first is low pressure type regional metamorphism, the second is low pressure type contact metamorphism due to the intrusion of Chunyang granite, and the last is medium pressure type metamorphism caused by thrust in south of Janggunbong area. The first metamorphism formed the prevailing metamorphic zones in the Paleozoic metasediments and the metamorphic grade of the first regional metamorphism increases from the chloritoid zone, through the staurolite zone, garnet zone, staurolite+biotite zone, and to the andalusite+biotite zone. The second metamorphism affected both Pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic metasediments located close to the Chunyang granite. The effect of the contact metamorphism is restricted to the very narrow zone around the granite. The third metamorphism that produced kyanite, is restricted to the very narrow region near the thrust fault in the south of Janggunbong with an E-W trend.
The Cenozoic geological structures and the tectonic evolution of the southern Ulleung Basin were studied with seismic profiles and exploration well data. Basement structure of the Korea Strait is distinctly characterized by normal faults trending northeast to southwest. The normal faults of the basement are most likely related to the initial liking and extensional tectonics of Ulleung Basin. Tsushima fault along the west coast of Tsushima islands runs northeastward to the central Ulleung Basin. The Middle Miocene and older sequences in the Tsushima Strait show folds and faults mostly trending northeast to southwest. These folds and faults may be interpreted as a result of compressional tectonics. The Late Miocene to Qauternary sequences are not much deformed, but numerous faults mostly N-S trending are dominated in the Tsushima Strait. The Ulleung Basin was in intial rifting during Oligocene, and then active extension and subsidence from Early to early Middle Miocene. Therefore SW Japan separated from Korea Peninsula and drifted toward southeast, and Ulleung Basin was formed as a pull-apart basin under dextral transtensional tectonic regime. During rifting and extensional stage, Tsushima fault as a main tectonic line separating SW Japan block from the Korean Peninsula acted as a normal faulting with right-lateral strike-slip motion as SW Japan drifted southeastward. During middle Middle Miocene to early Late Miocene, the opening of Ulleung basin stopped and uplifted due to compressional tectonics. The southwest Japan block converging on the Korean Peninsula caused compressional stress to the southern margin of Ulleung Basin, resulting in strong deformation under sinistral transpressional tectonic regime. Tsushima fault acted as thrust fault with left-lateral strike-slip motion. From middle Late Miocene to Quaternary, the southern margin of Ulleung Basin has been controlled by compressional motion. Thus the Tsushima fault still appears to be an active thrust fault by compressional tectonic regime.
The Pungcheon-myeon, Andong, consists mainly of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Jurassic igneous rocks, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks (Hasandong, Jinju and Iljik Formations) and Cretaceous igneous rocks (gabbroic rocks, dykes), in which several major faults are developed; Andong fault of ENE trend, which is the boundary fault of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin and the Precambrian-Jurassic basement (Yeongnam Massif), Namhu fault parallel to it, Maebong fault of NNW direction, bow-shaped Gwangdeok fault of ENE direction which is convex toward SSE direction, and Hahoe fault of NNE direction. This paper is researched the geological structures around these major faults by means of the detailed geometric analysis on beddings, joints, faults and drag folds. As a result, a reverse slip faulting of top-to-the SSE movement accompanied with a regional drag folding is recognized from the arrangement of bedding poles measured around the Gwangdeok and Hahoe faults at its northeastern extension, and a zone of Gwangdeok drag fold of 150-300 m width, which is wider at the central and eastern parts of Gwangdeok fault and narrower at its western part and Hahoe fault, is also defined. It indicates that the Hahoe and Gwangdeok faults are a single fault and their movements are coeval unlike the results of earlier reasearchers. And, In this area are recognized two types of faults [(E)NE${\sim}$EW(fault I), WNW${\sim}$NNW (fault II), trending faults] and four types of joints [EW (I), (N)NW (II), NNE (III), NE (IV) trending joints]. These fractures were formed at least through four different events, named as Dn to Dn+3 phases. (1) Dn phase; the formation of joint (I) (Gwangdeok joint) and the intrusion of acidic dykes of EW trend under the compression of EW direction. (2) Dn+1 phase; the formations of joint (II) (Maebong joint), lens-shaped boudinage of acidic dykes, oblique-slip reverse fault (Fault I-Gwangdeok fault) under the compression of (N)NW direction, and the formation of regional zone of Gwangdeok drag fold accompanying the Gwangdeok faulting. (3) Dn+2 phase; those of joint (III), Fault II (Maebong fault) by dextral strike-slip movement of Maebong joint under the compression of NNE direction, and the extension cutting of Dn+1 structures due to the Maebong faulting. (4) Dn+3 phase; the jointing (IV) and the reactivation of Fault II as oblique-slip type with predominant dextral motion which took place under the compression of NE direction. It also suggests that the Maebong fault is not a tear fault deveolped during thrust tectonics of the Andong and Gwangdeok faults but is a post-fault during different tectonic event.
The Northwestern Okcheon Metamorphic Belt in the Chungju area consists of the Munjuri Formation, the Daehyangsan Quartzite, the Hyangsanri Dolomite, and the Gyemyeongsan Formation, but the stratigraphy is still controversial. For a stratigraphic study, detailed stratigraphic sections were measured in two locations and mapping was carried out in the study area. The Munjuri Formation and the Daehyangsan Quartzite changed gradually in north and south section, but bedding parallel faults have developed in the boundary between two formations. The Daehyangsan Quartzite and the Hyangsanri Dolomite are conformable. Fault have developed in boundary between the Hyangsanri Dolomite and the Gyemyeongsan Formation. As a result of mapping in the study area, folding was recognized with $41^{\circ}/280^{\circ}$ plunging axis in the north part of the study area. Therefore, the bedding-parallel faults in the boundary might have occurred resulting from a layer parallel slip during the folding as well as the thrust. These results from this study and previous studies indicate that bedding-parallel faults in boundary between the Munjuri Formation and the Daehyangsan Quartzite are caused by a layer parallel slip during the folding. The fault between the Hyangsanri Dolomite and the Gyemyeongsan Formation is considered as a thrust fault, thereby the uppermost Gyemyeongsan Formation is placed under the Munjuri Formation. However the Gyemyeongsan Formation and the Munjuri Formation have similar age and rock composition. Hence, the Gyemyeongsan Formation is considered as an equivalent one with the Munjuri Formation. Therefore, the stratigraphy of Northwestern Okcheon Metamorphic Belt consists of the Gyemyeongsan/ Munjuri formations, the Daehyangsan Quartzite, and the Hyangsanri Dolomite in ascending order.

To be design the slope, the area distributed the shale or mica schist which was metamorphosed by shale must carefully consider the stability. The shale has the detrital materials of which the grain size are 1/256mm and fissility. As the reason the slope of shale is always unstable by bedding slip and fissility but also the joint and fault. Mica schist is also another unstable rock for slope by schistosity, cleavage, axial plane of a fold etc. In general shale and mica schist contain the swelling clay minerals such as smectite, vermiculite and montmorillonite. These minerals make the slope unstable. At OO tunnel construction area for the rail way of the Kyungbu high speed train, the slope of mica schist is very unstable by the distribution phenomena of the discontinuous plane such as joints which are 1-5cm spacing and thrust and strike-slip fault. By the drilling core of this area, most RQD have 0-20%.

Source parameters of the December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake are estimated using the grid test technique. Thirty polarities of P waves recorded at KMA, KIGAM, KSRS and JAPAN stations are used for the event. The obtained fault plane solution shows predominantly strike-slip motion with small amount of thrust component. The orientation of the fault is 180$\pm$10$^{\circ}$in strike, 50$\pm$5$^{\circ}$in dip and 150$\pm$5$^{\circ}$in rake, or 292$\pm$3$^{\circ}$in strike, 65$\pm$5$^{\circ}$in dip and 30$\pm$10$^{\circ}$ in rake. These solutions are very similar to those of earthquakes occurred at Sagju, Pohang and offshore Gunsan. The compressional axis of stress field is trending from ENE to WSW, which is consistent with the previously defined typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.. From the result of this study and other source mechanisms around the Korean Peninsula, we are of opinion that tectonic stress around the Korean Peninsula may be more attributed to the collision of Indian plate with the Eurasian plate than subduction of Pacific and Philippine plates.
The $M_W$ 9.0 thrust-fault earthquake has occurred in the Pacific coast of Tohoku, Japan, on March 11, 2011. We present the detection of the great earthquake and analyze T-waves associated with the main event and two other big aftershocks ($M_W$ > 7) recorded in a hydroacoustic array (H11N) in the Pacific Ocean by performing array and spectral analysis to examine characteristics of T-waves generated from the big events. The complex rupture process of the main event directly influences on the shape of the T-waves, and the peak locates on where T-waves excited from fast rupturing process arrive. We compare the two aftershocks with different fault type and show that the fault type and the source depth change shape and spectral contents of T-waves.
The gravity measurement has been conducted at 61 stations with an interval of about 500 to 1,000 m along two survey lines of about 47 Km between $Chungju-Jech{\check{o}}n$ and $Salmi-D{\check{o}}cksanmy{\check{o}}n$ in order to study on the subsurface geologic structure and structural relation between $Okch{\check{o}}n$ Group and Great Limestone Group of $Chos{\check{o}}n$ Supergroup. The Bouger gravity anomalies were obtained from the reduction of the field observations, and the distribution patterns of the basement and subsurface geologic structure were interpreted by means of the Fourier-Series and Talwani method for two-dimensional body. The depth of Conrad discontinuity varies from 12.7 Km to 15.7 Km, and vertical displacements along the Osanri and Bonghwajae faults are 1.0 Km and 1.5 Km, respectively between Chungju and $Jech{\check{o}}n$. The depth of Conrad discontinuity varies from 13.8 Km to 15.4 Km, and vertical displacement along the Bonghwajae fault is 0.5 Km between Salmi and $D{\check{o}}cksanmyon$. The basement is widely exposed at several places between Chungju and $Jech{\check{o}}n$. In the unexposed area between Osanri and $W{\check{o}}lgulri$, its depth is from 1.5 Km to 2.1 Km. It is displaced downward along the Osanri and Bonghwajae faults by 0.8 Km and 0.6 Km, respectively, and is displaced upward along the Dangdusan fault by 1.6 Km. On the other hand, the depth of the basement varies abruptly by the Sindangri, Jungwon, Kounri, and Bonghwajae faults between Salmi and $D{\check{o}}cksanmy{\check{o}}n$, and it is from 2.8 Km to 3.2 Km around $Salmimy{\check{o}}n$, from 1.6 Km to 2.5 Km between the Sindangri and Bonghwajae faults, 3.0 Km near Koburangjae, and 2.5 Km at $Doj{\check{o}}nri$. The high Bouguer gravity anomalies are due to the accumulation of $Okch{\check{o}}n$ Group and $Jangs{\check{o}}nri$ Metamorphic Complex whose density is higher than the basement exposed between Sondong and Osanri, and imply the existance of Bonghwajae Metabasite or hornblende gabbro of high density distributed along the Bonghwajae fault in the vicinity of Koburangjae. The low Bouguer gravity anomalies resulted form the fracture zone associated with fault or rock of low density imply the existance of the Osanri, Bonghwajae, Dangdusan faults and $Daed{\check{o}}cksan$ thrust between Chungju and $Jech{\check{o}}n$, the uplift of the basement by the Sindangri, Jungwon, Kounri, and Bonghwajae faults, and extensive distribution of Cretaceous biotite granites between Salmi and $Docksanmy{\check{o}}n$. The thickness of $Okch{\check{o}}n$ metasediments varies from 1.5 Km to 3.2 Km, and that of Great Limestone Group of $Chos{\check{o}}n$ Supergroup from 200 m to 700 m. It is interpreted that $Okch{\check{o}}n$ Group is in contact with Great Limestone Group of $Chos{\check{o}}n$ Supergroup by the fault zones of the Bonghwajae and $Daed{\check{o}}cksan$ faults, and the Bongwhajae fault is a thrust of high angle, by which the east of the basement is displaced downward 0.5 Km between Chungju and lechon, and 1.0 Km between Salmi and $D{\check{o}}cksanmy{\check{o}}n$.
